During my earlier teen years back in the late 90s, skateboarding had its pros and cons skating on business properties. The business properties had the ideal skating environment due to smoother pavement, relenting gaps and easy to reach ledges. Good ol grandmas church candle wax was used on these ledges and you needed a lot tailslides and truck grinding to smooth out the edges. Businesses only cared pushing skaters away because we were loitering and we were not business professionals so the sight of teenage and grungy filthy looking skates did not mix well with folks who worked in the nearby buildings wearing suits and ties. But we do not see eye to eye with what was right or wrong skating on properties back then - nobody cared and we just cared about being with friends and skateboarding and spot was our home. The pros about skateboarding on business property was that at the time, security guards are the only ones that can approach you but they cannot do anything so disobey. Then the cops roll in, we leave and come back again eventually. The law back then could not state private property as many businesses and org had certain regulations what can constitute private business property. So cops would tell you to leave and you leave and do it all again. The police could not give you a ticket (or make an arrest) unless it was evident there was destruction of private propert. Or worse, vandalism. Which all lines up to young skater minds at the time. Especially prone to that were skaters who belong to low income families. On the upside, the police benefited from this due to tickets being handed out, hospitals benefited from skateboarding accidents and security companies were hired to install prefectures and security cameras for legal purposes. I recall back in 1999, I was in high school, got older somewhat and our friends decided to put girls aside and go skateboarding with your old skater crew. We found the law fought back more against skateboarding and businesses and properties decided to install skateboarding deterrents. These were literally those little concrete, iron bolted metallic knobs to prevent skateboarders (and the razor and roller crew) from doing their cool tricks. Skateparks were built but you had to pay. Many were free but it was always crowded and you had to abide the pads and helmet law and you get a ticket if you dont follow those. The scene changed, you get older, priorities change, your mind changes.. your teenage years is now just a tale of your own book. Good times it was skateboarding. I now run my own business and share a plaza with other businesses and once in a while I see some kids skating at our plaza but I don't yell at them. In fact, I just give them some gatorade packs and snacks (they are low income folks, trust me) and I tell them they can skate all they want just dont do it during peak business hours and not to vandalize the place. Other business owners frown on that discussion. But I tell them soon enough, these kids will grow up to know that at least some other adults they have seen in their life actually gave to sh!ts about them.

Name another beloved pastime that can get you thrown in jail and your property confiscated just for doing it. Skateboarding is a sport and art combined, so imagine getting arrested for playing basketball, or playing a guitar. Skateboarding is a two billion dollar industry. Backed by institutions like Nike or Adidas, Redbull or Gatorade, and there are still places where you can go to jail for doing it. Then guess what, doing stuff like that only makes it appear cooler and rebellious, and that makes even more appealing and draws in even more people.

I worked in lawn care both residential and municipal and I’ve seen more cars and homes windows getting blasted out from pebbles flying from weed whackers than I’ve seen from skateboards lol

In that period inline skating became massive. Still remember taking over the skatepark. Skaters watching from the sidelines. Pitty that didn´t last.

Other then an unlucky cameraman, I have literally never once in almost 20 years of watching skate vids and having previously skated, ever seen a board go flying and smoke someone in the face or break a window. Not saying it hasn't happened, but saying it like it's a problem and it's a common thing cracked me up.

A skateboard could shoot out and hit somebody in the head? I'm no physics major but your editor showed mostly flat ground. How's the head boarding supposed to occurre precisely?
