I'd say the key is mostly in just not ever quitting sports in a general sense. You can't expect to be all flexible and somewhat impact resistent or capable of fast healing if your body gets zero exercise beyond the once a week or once a month at a skatepark. The other thing would probably be skateboarding too many days in a row at some point, without giving your body some rest. I'd also say that the older you become, the more important a decent warming up becomes. I'm 36 and it's the biggest thing I notice. My ollies are a good way to warm up in some sense. However, I can forget about doing ollies onto a high ledge first try if I didn't warm up. I also know a lot of people who swear by doing stretches first, before even getting on the board. I think depending on what your warming up looks like, you don't have to stretch. But can't deny how it works very well for some people. It's the same thing for outdoor team sports, like field hockey. I've played field hockey since I was 5 and never stopped played, even now. But I never stretch. I always do at least a short warming up or be careful not to go full berserk in terms of running or turning so my body can get into 'sport mode'. The other thing is probably diet, but I actually think it's kind of overrated. Most of my young adult life I ate the pastas and french fries and so on. I never made it a habit to go to McDonalds and definitely do not eat fast food that often at all, which helps. And I'm a fairly skinny dude. But especially as a guy, there's a lot you can make up for with just sports in general, work outs etc.

For me (52), a maximum of four days of skateboarding in a week, with warm up exercises and stretching before and after a sesh. The rest of the days, some stretching and light routines of exercises, specially for the core and lower body, legs and ankles. There are a few YT channels with very good content about conditioning for skaters. Stay hydrated, and listen to your body :-)

I'm 57 and what I can say is that everything comes at you so much faster because the brain isn't processing as quickly as it used to. Falls are always slams so extra focus is needed....but the payoff is when you learn a new trick that you personally have never done. Fire 🔥

lol dude I'm 36 and that's how I feel whenever I fall. it seems to come out of left field and suddenly I'm on my back like a dead bug. I wear full set of pads but it still feels like a blowout whenever hit the ground. the subtle danger of this sport is truly underrated. and I feel like most people who are good have been doing it since a young age so they experienced the falls when their muscles and bones were at their peak. they can enjoy doing tricks at a later age with less danger of falling due to experience.

50 myself and you don’t realize how movement deteriorates as you age along with coordination. Naturally there is a decline and if any of you are looking at the long haul the secret is stretching and keeping your muscles lengthened. One day you’ll wake up and your hip will feel tweaked without any explanation. That’s what it feels like at 50. I’ve always been athletic and coordinated but it’s a struggle now

Freaking awesome of your dad (and you)! I'm 58 and want to buy a park board. I have not skated a half pipe or park pool in a number of years. I was on a friend's son's borrowed board last time I rode a pool for some simple carves and kick turns. I've been inching closer to getting a park-appropriate board lately. I've only been riding long boards as a middle aged man. I skated pools ramps and parks beginning in the 1970's. Your dad has inspired me!

The knee pad message is so true. My daughter got into skating and was asking me about skating. I'm 47 and haven't hardly touched a board in 25 years. I wanted her to have a good experience, so I started skating with her. After a month or so, I was beginning to get comfortable. I did wear knee pads. One night, I took them off to just cruise around and bam. Next thing I knew, my knee was getting slammed into the ground because I didn't bail fast enough and did the splits. Put me out for a few months. Now, I don't get on without pads. And, I worked on bailing properly. It really is a muscle memory thing if you practice it.

Another 47 year old here. If I'm park skating I pad up but only helmet and wrist guards. Occasionally I'll toss on some knee sleeves from Old Bones Therapy. But if I'm just hitting curbs and low street type stuff then I'm still going padless. The wrist guards are a must though. I've taken too many falls and lost tons of skin or gotten palm bruises because I didn't wear them. Always remind myself to skate safe so I can skate longer.

Damn, your Dad rips!! I started skateboarding last year at 47. First time on a skateboard in my entire life. I had two serious injuries right off the bat, but mostly because I didn't realize how hard skateboarding really is. I also didn't skate this winter because the weather in the NE was really bad. Now I just enjoy rolling around at my favorite spots and am hoping to get an Ollie down buy the end of the summer. I just go out to have fun. Slowly but surely. I've got nothing to prove. Good advice on pads. I'm ten years away from 55, but I usually always wear them to keep me skating more often without injury. About a month a go I didn't put them on 'warming' up and slammed on my knee from a five foot quarter. It wasn't that bad a slam, but only just this week feel like my knee has come right. They are worth wearing to keep rolling.

I’m 62 and started ramp quad skating (old school roller skates) last year. I skate in north Jersey and there are not too many skate parks. Full pads are a must! My knee pads get a lot of action, my wrist guards are quite scuffed. My helmet does not have too many marks, but it has saved me when needed. Every mark on my pads is something that kept me out of the doctor’s office. Healing is much slower as you get older so the main objective is to avoid an injury. Older teens and young adults don’t know what to make of me when I get to the park, but once they see I can drop in, I get head nods. They get skate park etiquette and sharing the ramps work well. The young kids don’t get it, and I move to a different part of the park. I challenge myself each day, but don’t push too far. When I find myself saying, “just one more run,” that’s the time to head home.

I would recommend to my fellow OG skaters to use larger diameter & softer wheels. That helps with pebbles, and cracks in cement. I started skating at 50 now I’m 56 and just do downhill. I don’t understand why I didn’t start sooner. I’m just obsessed with hills and skating them. Everywhere I go I look at how skateable the hill is. I could be driving past an amazing tourist site because I’m checking out the smooth the bitumen. The way I keep skating well is to stay as skinny as possible. For downhill and freeride I think it’s best to be light. As you get older quads are weaker and harder to build so you need to be strong and light and also flexible so I do a lot of mobility exercises for my hips, back and neck. Also if you’re really big around the middle you can’t squat fast and when you crash you hit really hard. So I have this constant battle with my weight but only because I want to keep skating until I’m 80 or 90.

i love golf! give it a chance. koston and all the pros love playing, the key is to practice more than you play. so hit balls a few times during the week and play a round on the weekend.

I'm 49 and broke my tib and fib a couple months ago in a bowl at the Vista park. I was just getting into it after so years of not skating much, and never try anything over my skill level, but I clung to the wall too long going frontside and jumped off. I knew I broke it but it broke more and compounded after tro guys helped me out of the bowl when I should have waited for the paramedics. Well this is a long recovery and my toes still feel taped together. Don't know if it's because of nerve damage or will get better but I don't ever want to go thru this again. Sad to say,, but this might be the end of it for me. I think part of the saying that you get old because you quit skating is true, but I also gotta realize that I can't do it forever. The slams are more damaging and it sucks, but it's just how it is.

Luv it, boring shit like golf. HAHA. About the same age, dig cruising on my landyachtz. Recommend wrist guards, easy to wear and minimal look, but boy oh boy

Interesting video. How old are you? If you want to be skating at 55 I reckon you should wear a helmet in the bowl. I had a friend who smashed his head real bad and couldn't work or take care of himself after that. He definitely isn't skating anymore.

Better turning then independent? Nah. I’ve been riding indys since 83. Indys are the best. There is a reason they have been around for so long…. They are the best.

Golf sucks? Too many kids (the future of skateboarding) at the skatepark suck? "I never tried to be a Frank Hawk". Like Frank Hawk didn't promote skateboarding as fun? C'mon guys. You sound like a couple of old guys at the skate park... oh... wait...
I decided to start learning how to skateboard in my 40s.
