Good idea. You don't need to confuse your brain yet with more "new" information about wheels. Forwards is enough. Master some stops and that will help your progress. I can help you more if you use some of my Free Trials on my new course. Some are for complete beginners and there's a range of skills, skating, stopping, turning etc. All Free (and much better than these KZfaq vids). Great video, Asha! A long time ago I learned a way to fall backwards while practicing martial arts. They use this way in Aikido and Judo. It saved me a few times... I cushion the hit by extending one of my arms sideways, therefore first contact is the hand, then the elbow and finally the shoulder blade. It also implies hunching the back to avoid hitting the head and to create a "rocking chair" effect. The point is to absorb the impact using a bigger surface and not just the wrist. Obviously, it requires elbow pads and helmet just in case, and the rounded back is very important. As I said this saved me a few times but it's necessary to practice it on grass until it becomes second nature, then when fall is unavoidable technique is applied by reflex. I agree it's better to fall forwards, falling backwards is always nasty.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 5 жыл бұрын
This is great advice yes. Practicing lots of things on the grass is a good idea, for example jumps if they r new, falls, things like that. The body needs lots of tries to get something into its 'bank' to be used later. Thats why I use static exercises (on but mostly off the grass) to speed up the process of 'getting it' later.

I actually fell yesterday going backwards, it's been a while since that happened to me. I grew to doing martial arts, so my instinct was to back-roll through it over my shoulder. Managed to escape all injury. The ground was pretty rough, and I normally try to drag brake through the transition if I feel I'm going too fast for comfort, but I didn't brake enough and caught up in a rough patch. When I knew I was going down, I curled my back, tucked my head down, started thinking round thoughts, and hoped I wouldn't slide, especially since I really liked the shirt I was wearing, and didn't want to ruin it. Thankfully the shirt and I both came out unscathed. Sometimes we just get lucky. Other times your partially tear your AC joint in your shoulder. But that's another story...
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 5 жыл бұрын
Phew! Lucky indeed. I am very, very selective with my surfaces going backwards. When it starts to get rough I've already transitions to forwards. Chicken? or Sensible? You decide. But my professional advice is stay out of the rough stuff when skating backwards. Life's hard enough as it is! Glad the shirt survived. Nothing worse than ruining clothes along with ligaments....

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. I'm glad this video helped you. Skating backwards is not too complex, BUT the fact that you need to be twisted in order to watch where you are going it makes everything weird. You need to get used to it very slowly and following certain techniques that are not really intuitive. That's why skating backwards is challenging for most people. Asha has developed a specific course that contains backward skating and tricks. You can check it out here skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-advanced-level-full-course/

Hey Asha thanks for making the Video dedicated to my question. It was bad luck falling over because a small stick got between the rolls of my skates and stopped the leading skate while skating backwards, so the skates hit and I was down. Well anyway the video helped me a lot and inspired me to improve my backwards skating and get back on them when my wrist is well :) I learned that it is really important to carefully look where you going and clear the way while you skating backwards.

When I was skating a lot, getting comfortable with one leg transition to backwards really quickly progressed skating backwards in general. That’s where where one skate is off the ground going forwards, knee is bent, then using lifted leg to pivot/balance. It became weirdly casual after that. Also getting the body and head twisted around so you can see where you’re going (and not just blindly going backwards) also helped - and lead everything with your butt
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah the position you are describing on one leg is a more accentuated version of the Scissor in the vid, just all the weight on the trailing skate! That's quite advanced for most new backward skaters, but well done you. Hows the other leg? I bet you have stronger thigh muscles on that skate from doing that. It takes a lot of strength. I imagine you re under 30?
@infinitycrops

I’m actually over 40 and been skating since the early 90s - but have not been getting out much as of late. But yeah - I do tend to do things more on my right leg than the left, but both legs are fairly strong.

You don't put weight on your legs. You transfer your weight, from leg to leg. Stand on one, push with the other, then stand on the push leg, and push with the standing leg, transferring, weight and balance, to momentum. Pay attention to where you heading.

I was progressing really well thanks to Asha's brilliant videos and was practicing backward crossovers when I hit a twig. Landed hard on my elbow, and fractured it, even with elbow guards on. Should've listed to Asha's advice about checking for such hazards before starting! My problem now is feeling too scared to get back, certainly backwards skating anyway. I'm not a young person and the thought of another serious fall is a real psychological barrier at the moment. Any words of wisdom?!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos Жыл бұрын
So sorry to hear this, that's really bad luck. Bless you for getting right back on KZfaq to find more info. Glad this was useful. After a fall (at any age but particularly when we're older) it's natural to feel very cautious and apprehensive because the body KNOWS that it doesn't want that to happen again. The secret to returning I'm afraid is to do so very slowly and gejntly coerce the body through all the learning stages again. It will be a faster process than when you first started of course, but often people rush back to right where they were and expect the body to be OK with that. It wont be, and tension, fear and hesitancy will its way of telling you "I wanna go slow here". And slow in velocity as well as learning progression. After a fall I highly recommend that you relearn everything with an instructor or at least a structured PROCESS. And I'm sorry but I don't mean KZfaq. KZfaq (even my lessons here) are at best glossed over summaries. They are not fully structured lessons with multiple core skill progressions. I would recommend you at least use my online training course "How to Skate Intermediate" which will take you through the learning backwards skating again (and fill in the gaps you missed). I don't know how fluent your beginner skills were but if the intermediate still feels scary then I'd recommend the beginner series. Learning each skill in order is another way to reduce the risk of falling and to become an altogether superior skater to the one you were before the bad fall. Many people have taken this path successfully. Check out their testimonials on this page; skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-intermediate-level-full-course/ You could even work through the progressions off-skates while you are healing so you don't loose your skate mojo completely. I really hope you choose this path as I know it will help you return to skating and become better than you ever imagined.

Hi Asha. This is a good video. I’m wondering, however, what happened to another really good video you had on transitioning from forward to backward, and vice versa. You demonstrated it in a very small practice area outdoors, and you talked about the different ways of transitioning and the appropriate technique to use, depending upon the speed at which you’re skating. I can’t find the video and I wish you would republish it, or re-create it. You even talked about the rhythm your skates should produce as you swivel or lift one skate, and then the other. And you indicated how easy it is to practice that in a small area.

Yes I remember that 'small space' video just as the pandemic started. I've been getting some advice on my channel from various professionals and seems I've been doing a tonne of things wrong so I was recommended to reduce the video load and make some changes. I'm really sorry for this as I know some of you were actively working or using some of the videos. But learning how to run an online business is harder than I thought and turns out I'm shooting myself in the foot (I had no idea). I'm working on some new plans for this year which I can announce in the spring. I hope to be able to provide a much more thorough service then.

Fell backwards on my lower back + tailbone on the first day I put on the rollerblades after 20+ years of a break...been recovering since, it's been a week now. Fell in the dumbest way possible. I'm envious of all those who have martial arts reflexes and know how to smooth the fall with their hand but my reflexes were to slow for that. I am wondering if there are any "best practices" for falling backwards, which unfortunately - although obviously the least desirable way to fall - sometimes just can't be prevented or turned into a forward fall.

Sorry to hear about your falls. Not enough knee bend has to be at the cause of why you are falling. Get someone to video you and check. I do not practice backwards falling. For me that's like saying "let's practice having a car crash and not doing any damage". If you fall backwards (whether travelling forwards or backwards on skates) you have just mad ea HUGE error (consciously or unconsciously). Or you didn't see the thing that stopped your skate (also your error I think). I prefer to get my students doing the right thing that produces no falls. So fr Ive never had a bad backwards fall in a class in 19 years. I don't think that's fluke. It's because they are doing it right. When its right, you don't fall. I do not believe we learn by trial and error on skates. Unless you have a butt made of air!

@SkatefreshVideos 5 жыл бұрын
I should have made it clearer in the vid that the scissor position is a cruising position (ie not propelling or producing speed at that moment). This is for all the times you are not pushing or propelling. There are many ways of producing speed backwards and maintaining it for different abilities, starting with "normal" backwards skating which is identical to forwards but backwards. The half lemons for training, then lower strides, then crisscross then crossovers and finally crossovers with crossunders which I think is the only viable and equal sided energy method which is sustainable (for me anyway) for long(er) periods of time. There are some backward skating full video trainings on backwards skating on my Online Course site www.InlineSkateCourse.com. Backward Basics (which everyone misses) on intermediate course; inlineskatecourse.com/how-to-skate-intermediate/ More advanced, Back Crossovers and detailed Back Crossunders lessons. This is THE definitive how to skate backwards course; inlineskatecourse.com/how-to-skate-advanced/ There are free trial on both those courses (although not backward skills, but you can check out the course format. It's everything that's missing on KZfaq in my opinion. Enjoy

this is a very specific question but: what is the right mindset to not freak out as a beginner when you start accelerating in speed? also thank you for your content. i love you!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. You are asking this question in a video about backwards and I don't think backwards is actually for beginners. Backwards is for intermediates and intermediates already have a "mindset" which is quite different from the one beginners have. That being said, if you mean how to not freak out as a beginner in general what I suggest is this: first, protective gear (if you know how to wear it and use it you hardly ever get seriously injured, though it's not invencible of course); second, heel brake (this is the best beginner's method to stop, it's really a lifesaver, it works if you know how to use it, even in slopes); third, positions (the ready position and the scissors position are some of the very first stances a skater should master; these positions and switching between them are essential and it's really difficult to fall over if you do them well. This is all explained in the How to Skate: Beginner online course made by Asha here skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-beginner-level-full-course/ The freak-out moment comes when you find yourself in a situation you have never experienced before. When you don't have everything under control, then you freak out. All those 3 factors mentioned come into play to avoid the freak-out moment. With the heel brake you can decelerate very quickly, with the scissors position you have a safe place to glide and stay until the speed goes away by itself, if the fall is inevitable you will be protected by your gear. So you see how you will be under control all the time. There is nothing bad about being a beginner, we all have been there once, but it's good to understand the difference between a reckless beginner and a smart beginner. If you are a smart beginner you don't take slopes, you don't go on streets surrounded by heavy traffic, you don't skate without a heel brake or without protective gear relying on good luck, etc. Now, I might have gone too far with my answer, the point with speed and freaking-out is very simple: you can go as fast as you are able to stop at that speed. Your subconscious knows this way better than your conscious level does, and when you are just about to pass the speed threshold it sends a red alert to your body/mind connection. You, as a smart beginner, must pay attention to this alert immediately, because it's the moment you can still save yourself using your knowledge; if you overlook this alert you get to the point of no return and are left to your own devices (mostly luck) because your body/mind connection won't respond. You can train your speed threshold practicing everything consciously in a controlled environment and increasing your speed gradually.

Keep calm, spread legs, toes together, heels apart is the position of reverse. Going forward in this position, will bring you to a stop. You can do it going downhill, to slow momentum, by crouching like a Racehorse Jockey. Slopes are not for beginners.

dont you need the weight on the back foot with the scissor if youre pushing yourself back with the other foot?
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. I don't quite understand your question. Anyway, when gliding backwards in a scissors position the weight should be on the trailing leg. It can be on the leading leg for a bit (to do a fake soul slide for example) but it's safer to stay on the trailing leg. When striding backwards the weight changes from one leg to the other. It never stays on one leg only, both legs are used for propulsion and both legs get a moment to rest.

@skatefresh is to okay to skate for person who has done his acl surgery for knee . Can you please confirm or do a video on it . That would be helpful
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a doctor and each surgery and individual are different. Only your doctor can give you advice on when its safe to exercise after surgery and I would recommend following their advice and physio exercises before returning to skating so you have some muscle recovery already and then skating will fortify you even more. But its very important to learn right without tension in your body, so try and get some lessons or follow an online program like my own so you don't fall or pick up bad habits. I do know many students who have returned successfully to skating after all kinds of surgeries so yes it's possible.

I have to disagree on the wrist guards. I fell backwards once, catched myself on my hands and it did hurt, but by no means was it as bad as it could have been without my guards. It depends on the model you use. I got the cheap Oxelo guards and they look a lot safer than what your wrist guards look like. They’re literally made of two plastic pieces that are wrapped around your wrists and they’re so strong I can move my hands a lot. Which is great, safety wise.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. You can disagree but the truth is that no place of plastic will save you from a hit hard enough to break a bone. Wrist guards protect, of course, and they are great to keep everything in place to avoid a dislocation which can happen if you don't wear anything, because wrists are naturally weak. But wrist guards, and protective gear in general, were not designed to make you invencible, no matter their quality. They were designed to protect you from debris, and to make you slide and spread the force, hence it's better to fall forwards, because the knees (that are stronger than wrists) protected by knee pads will catch the fall first dispelling most of the force, and only later the wrists and elbows will hit. This doesn't happen falling backwards where most of the force will be caught by your butt or in the worst case by your wrist directly without any prior dispersion of energy. Your fall was not hard enough for a fracture, that's it. She never said that falling backwards always means a fracture.

I added D30 strips on the sides of my straps of wrist guards by wrapping the strips in cut up Mtn bike gloves so I could sew them on where the top & bottom straps wrap around. This will save the outside of my hands if I fall not directly on the plastic (which I did before & really hurt my hand) I also wear impact gloves under them. Also added D30 to the knee pads, this has saved me a few times. Live to Sk8 another day!

The problem is the scissors position, my back foot leaves parallel position especially when I try to look over my shoulder...
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos Жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Everything needs to be mastered gradually. First, assume the scissors position going forwards. When that feels really familiar to you, progress to do it backwards on a surface completely free of obstacles, without watching. This is to allow your brain to stay calm while getting used to the position going backwards. Only when you can go backwards 5-6 meters totally relaxed in that position (without watching), then you start looking at your side, extend your arm to the side too and watch your hand (it will helps!), and later when you feel comfortable, move that arm pointing your hand to the direction of travel. Now you're looking at your hand, and completely backwards without losing your scissors position. Later you can lay down your arms. You will see that it's not actually "looking over your shoulder", it's actually a whole torso twist. The arms will make that twist possible. If you just "look over your shoulder" you force your neck and it's not natural, some people assume even strange positions such as looking below their armpits.

I broke my wrist from falling backwards too last week. It was from leaning a bit to far back while doing crossovers. Now I’m kind of scared to continue skating :(.. Any advice on how to avoid nasty falls like that? I really want to continue riding at high speeds but after this injury I don’t know if I am brave enough.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Don't worry. It's pretty natural to be scared after an accident like that. The general rule to avoid any kind of fall is to bend the knees, this places your weight on the ball of the foot. So it's not about leaning forwards or backwards. Once you're fully recovered you will need some time to get over it, so take it easy and go progressively. Sometimes what happens to us it that we're very enthusiastic and we're not ready for certain things. If you ever check Asha's online courses in www.skatefresh.com you will see how one thing takes you to the other, this makes the process smooth and easier. Maybe you were not ready for the crossovers yet or you tried to do it without going through the different stages that technique requires. Sometimes we just want to achieve stage 5 overlooking stage 1, stage 2, etc. Besides, protective gear is really useful but we also need to know how to fall. The wrist is quite weak no matter the body, so wrist guards are a must for every skater. Even wearing wrist guards you can break a wrist because they are actually designed to save you from debris and diffuse the energy when you take the hit, but ultimately they are not invincible.

Well i think its the first "not so good tutorial" In case of a backward fall i would think about 1. Get as low as you can 2. Do what you can to fall on the side 3. Always try to dissipate as much energy as you can while you're hitting the ground (by rolling, using your arms and legs in controlled way) Never try to put all your weight on one of the hands (thats what most people do when they fall first time) Art of falling is really worth practicing in a controlled enviroment, so in case of emergency your body will instantly know what to do to avoid injuries. Also its worth to see how aggresive skaters fall.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 5 жыл бұрын
This is really good advice. I discovered early on in my teaching that everyone is so different in their bodies and their physical capabilities are also varied. I used to make everyone fall on their pads on the grass and if someone didn't or couldn't Id always her them and make sure they did it..... but once someone who was apprehensive went and did it on my insistence and she hurt herself, just falling onto her knee pads on grass, not moving. After this I realised that I couldn't force everyone to do this 'practice falling' routine. I simply observe who declines it and know in advance they will more tense, more stiff and need more attention.

iv actually taken a lot of spills and one piece of knowledge i can pass on is if your gonna fall just accept it i know its hard to accept your gonna fall and hit the ground but from most of my experience 80% of the injury comes from trying to keep yourself from falling when your already falling if you just go with the fall and try to tuck and roll out you wont hit the ground so hard, i use to try to regain my balance when i was falling but after watching a few people doing the same thing when they fell i realized why it hurt soo much they have 0% commitment to the fall and want to avoid it at all costs so when they actually fall and hit the ground its like a sack of potato's
@rodneyhill3770

U are 1000% right. tuck and roll is the name of the game. Just flow with the fall, otherwise, trying to stop yourself from falling, you could end up hurting yourself. Skating is Science. Balance, Center of Gravity, Centrifugal Force. If you can conquer these, then you can be the Master of your Rollerblades/Quads.
