I tried to learn how to freeskate! This was a whole different feeling than anything I've tried before but I had a ton of fun, and also started learning some stuff! Not sure if this will help anyone, but the JMK videos say that rather than shifting your weight to the front or back of your foot (like skateboarding) you actually have to turn your front foot left/right in the direction you want go.

If you want to gain momentum just lean your left foot forward and lean your right foot backwards and do it repeatedly
