No one is driven by the devil to do anything. Like Bessie Head said: Heredity is nothing, environment is everything. If you're starved, abused and neglected it is human nature to survive and you hold onto whatever will help you get to the next day. Then to overcome the issue of degraded self esteem due to abuse and neglect attaching to material things, fame and that superficial respect is easy to grab hold of. Yes, everyone respects a self-respecting criminal, except by the self-righteous holier than thous.
