A exquisite European country with a large number of islands spanning the length of the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, Greece is one of the most appealing to live or retire in terms of overall cost of living natural beauty and landscapes, but there is a lot more to it than meets the eye. The country features an excellent, friendly local population that is welcoming to retirees and ex-pats alike, treating them with the Greek hospitality and one of the healthiest diet in the world. Aside from this, it can be very affordable to buy property as long as one choses the right spot. Of course, budget oriented people need to steer clear of its pricy tourist destinations. When it comes to visa policies the country offers several types of resident permits for financially independent individuals and a dedicated golden visa for retirees.
So here are 12 best places to live or retire Comfortably in Greece.

I moved from the US to Crete (Chania) a few years ago. I was born here, but lived in the US my whole life. Love the US, but Crete is truly a piece of heaven. Many come and decide to make this home. Rent is the most expensive around 400-800 euros is the average for a nice place, but if you have intentions on staying, there are great opportunities to build on a nice piece of plot land. Food runs around 50 euros for dinner for 2 with wine. or about 8euros a person for delivery. Happy exploring :)

@@despinakouremenos9600 hi! If you want to be near town but not in it, my first pick would be Koum Kapi and my 2nd would be Nea Hora. They are on opposites sides of the town within walking distance however. Around 2 km to where the action is. And so a car is not necessary…hope this helps. Happy exploring 🏝

I'm from Thessaloniki and I would recommend my city as its close to Chalkidiki peninsula (combines mount scenery and forests along with emerald waters at affordable prices, especially at the middle "foot" as the 1st "foot" isnt quiet at all) plus its rly close to Mt Athos, a globally unique religious experience but only for male visitors, and within close proximity to other Balkan countries for easy and CHEAP weekend trips) Ithaca (quiet with amazing scenery, you may lose yourself by the beauty of this place) Crete (have it all, big and small, ancient, traditional or modem, you name it) Thasos and Lefkada (excellent connection to mainland with low prices esp for Thasos) Ikaria (unique in every way possible + world champion of long life) with minimum touristic industry. For those looking something away from the crowds at the shores Epirus and Central Greece holds some gorgeous mountains, rivers so clean that you can drink their waters without any concerns with iconic stone build villages and bridges that would blow your mind if you re an nature lover. Ioannina with its lake island and Parga as main places to check with close 3rd and 4th places Litochoro (Mt Olympus small town) and Karpenisi with its mountains and a unique "πανταβρεχει" ie foreverrains small iconic waterfall to discover by hike through a small gorge

Kavala is an awesome place to retire. One of the most beautiful cities in Greece, stunning beaches and excellent local seafood, the perfect town size (not too large, neither too small), good local health & services for seniors, all at affordable cost. Thassos is an amazing destination for short trips if you live there (can even be done on a rented sailboat). Great winter resorts in northern Greece or southern Bulgaria are also in close proximity. Most of it's younger residents speak english, some speak german or french. Great access on motorways and a few international flights from it's local airport too (but mostly during the touristy months atm). I believe it's not attracting larger crowds because not many people are aware of it.

Weird reference to the 'gloomy suburbs' of Athens. Gloom is not exactly an attribute that Mediterranean cities are renowned for. And suburbs such as Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Psyhiko, Filothei, Halandri, Maroussi and Kifissia have been appealing to expats and retirees for decades (although don't expect property bargains).

If you are over 65 and plan to retire in Greece you need to consider the distance to big airport to let your children easier visit you, distance to large private clinic / hospital to help health issues recovery, easy access to your house without million ladders and steep slopes, not to be close to forest due to fire risk. May be focus your search on north to avoid killing heat in summer. And be ready to spend 5-9 months to buy a house due to bureaucracy as we did. And be ready to very low quality of houses.

Actually unemployment in Athens (and for Greece as a whole) has dropped to record low levels, 11% for the whole country, down from a national record peak of 28% ten years ago (and keeps falling sharply, whereas for Athens it stands at around 9%, down from nearly 30% ten years ago as the economy has picked up steam over the past 3 years and left the crisis of the previous decade behind). In the meantime businesses are searching for employees and they cant find enough despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of younger Greeks who had left in search of job elsewhere in Europe are returning, so businesses are trying to find foreign ones. Finally, allow me to add that Athens has an amazing sprawl of middle and upper middle class suburbs with great infrastructure and amenities along the coast, the east and the northeast off the main center (which is fast being gentrified). Crime rate is relatively low, as you rightly mentioned (and I hope it stays that way). I also love the international permanent population from all over the world and ethnic neighborhoods (African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Chinese). These people are pivotal in turning semi-abandoned gritty Athenian districts into lively places to explore and eat and visitors are fast taking notice. I also love Kalamata and Thessaloniki (it also starts having an increasing international permanent local population) and of course CRETE!

I've been to Greece several times, and the two things I love most about the country, is the friendly people and the food - oh my god the food... :) If I was to retire to Greece, I would probably find a small village on Corfu, with a few restaurants that are open all year, and situated by the sea. That's actually something I've seriously thought about, and may end up doing, since I'm single and can do what the heck I want. Since I'm Norwegian, my pension will be more than enough to cover the costs when the time comes. I would NEVER EVER move to Athens, though. It has a few beautiful sights, but overall it's not a beautiful city, actually quite the opposite, imo. But there are thousands of other incredible places in Greece, so finding a great place to move to, wouldn't be a problem at all. Btw, wouldn't move to Crete either - been there a few times, and it's super-expensive compared to the rest of the country, and it has a lot of half-desert-ish and stoney landscape that doesn't appeal much to me. Many beautiful towns, though, but they're too crowded by tourists in the summer.

Since you addressing to retirees you should stress that Greece, especially the countryside, is very safe, random crime virtually unknown. Also, we have a world class health care system, with abundance of very competent doctors of any specialization and Hospitals that can provide very high quality health care for free …. Yes, Greeks bitch, moan and complain all the time about our Health care system but trust me, its one of the best. They cannot resurrect the dead, but I can testify on multiple occasions, including my case, they came really close ...

Very cheep & beautiful island for retirement is Leros in the Dodecanese. Personally I prefer Astypalea, because i'm in deep love with that magic island, but unfortunately has become one of the most expensive in the Aegean and I speak mostly on buying a house or just a plot... don't thinking on that anymore. On my island Lesvos, I prefer the southern coasts from Tarti & Plomari till the westernmost South coasts of Tavari & Eressos!!! These places in my opinion are having the best natural energy for your soul, because these are the most sunny cause are looking towards the most southern archipelago. Also Molyvos is a preserved masterpiece traditional settlement & looking southwards to the rest west island, but a more expensive one. I can't miss also the beautiful small settlement of Sigri, the most Aegean whitewashed looking settlement on the island, with an open sea positive energy, on the westernmost point of Lesvos and having a new constructed ferry port!!! Crete is one of the best places for retirement, cause its climate, especially the south part of the island which has the most wild "face" & for it's a huge island with many chances. Also I love very much Tinos island in the northern Cyclades. It's an architecture cycladic diamond with many beautiful small villages & nice "calm" nature (not very green or very arid)!!! The rest of the most appropriate islands are Amorgos, Kythira, Kea, Andros, Kythnos, Skyros, Sifnos & of course... Icaria!!! In Chios island I like mostly the southern medieval villages, which are the most preserved & traditional with their vast mastic cultivations around... a magic place to be!!!

The first time I traveled to Greece was October 1985. It was an overwhelmingly pleasant experience traveling around there for almost half a year. The climate, the landscapes and certainly the very hospitable people (especially in the small villages) plus the irresistibly delicious food and drink, no wonder the gods had their place there. Who wouldn't want to live there?

Well I'm from Rhodes, and I can understand why people want to make the move to some of these places. As for Rhodes you can expect the most expensive to the very cheap for land and homes. It's a big island and has something for everyone. It already has many people from around the world who live here. The best part is the weather and the ability to fly directly to other places in Europe. Good luck with your search.

Ok living in an island and there's an emergency health issue and the weather is bad... there are no doctors in abundance on the islands so you gotta go to Athens or Thessaloniki via...a wavy sea or a chopper etc Living in a small island during winter...id say... Good luck!!! Don't confuse it on what it is during summer vs winter time. Its a whole different situation.

Athens should be judjed per neighbourhood. Nea Smyrni, Pagkrati, Neos Kosmos etc. could be considered good. Crete is a vast place. Chania, Rethymno and Irakleio provide everything. That's not the case for the rest of Crete. There are other nice places, like Palaeochora, that are very quiet during winter time. You missed cities that provide everything, such as Alexandroupolis, Xanthi, Volos, Ioannina, Ermoupolis etc.

it depends on the region. Southern Greece and the islands are warmer than Nothern Greece (Macedonia, Thrace, Epirus regions). For example, in Athens, many people start going to the beach in March, but in Thessaloniki (Nothern Greece) they start later.

Summer gets pretty hot overall (around 30 C) but for the rest of the year It depends on the region and there are different microclimates as well. In general northern Greece has significant rainfall and intense winters while southern Greece experiences mild winters overall. For example Crete averages more than 300 days of sunshine annually.

@Mike-hg1fn
@Mike-hg1fn 2 күн бұрын
Yes, Vodafone have mifi which is fast but I would still take a 4g meter app on your phone to test reception where you plan to live, some remote areas still have poor reception. I was going to move to one village where my readings showed nothing so chose a village where it was stronger. Vodafone was €20 for 200GB, this was last year so it may have better offers. Either this or landline but then you’ll have to ask a local regarding reception and speed. Oh and get a vpn.

hmm I would say most Greeks are very family oriented and don't care about others expect their own close relatives and friends, there are several Greek places where people are more open and desiring a closer bond/relationship with their neighbor's, places like IKARIA (Greek Island). If you goto Athens and Attiki my generation loves outsiders and are happy you are there, older people tend to be more closed off but this has also changed in recent years

With my $1200 retirement paycheck once I got retired several years ago I moved to Russia looking for a cheaper place to retire. Africa could be the cheapest, but not a desirable place to retire, but in Russia I found acceptable life where my income was more than enough. There were nice relationships between the US and Russia at that time so I did not expect any trouble. However three months ago my retirement payments have been stopped without explanations and Social Security has not responded anymore. I find myself trapped in a foreign country having no sustenance. On the other hand I am too old and weak to resettle again. I don't have power and money to move anywhere else. I can only go to the street begging in a foreign country. The government has defrauded me. Don't trust them. They are swindlers.
