Time for another sketchbook tour! This is my favorite sketchbook I've ever used. I love drawing in it with all sorts of materials but I especially love it for gouache! Gouache just looks so good on the beige paper, and since I don't use a ton of water it performs perfectly well. I hope this sketchbook tour inspires you! #gouache #drawing #sketchbooktour

I love watching the sketchbook videos because I always learn a new way to study and practice. As a beginner, seeing how to do value studies and color studies is revelatory. It informs my painting so much more than just following a step-by-step tutorial of how to paint a landscape because it teaches me how to observe and analyze what I am seeing in a totally new way. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for sharing your creativity with us. I remember many of your pieces from previous videos. A quick search through them all in no way dies justice to the effort you took with each one and the pleasure gained from watching a piece of your art work develop from start to completion. So many lovely memories come to light again in my old mind. You are such an inspiration. Thank you Sarah. X

Ohhhhhhhh you should absolutely come back to WA not only for Mt. Rainier, but also for the other volcanoes. They are all amazing and stunning in their own right. Mt. St. Helens is a personal favorite of mine (for reasons), but Mt. Baker and Glacier Peak are very picturesque as well, plus you have Mt. Adams just across the Cascades and Mt. Hood just across the Columbia River in Oregon. The PNW is loaded with breathtaking scenery to paint, really. COME. JOINNNNNNNNN UUUUUUHHHHHSSSSSSSSSSSS. 😂

I found you on Skillshare initially and started on your gouache forest one. Then I roped my mom into it and we had so much fun with that. We had to slow you down until you sounded blackout drunk because my mom is an oil painter and I mostly use watercolours so gouache was a new animal for both of us. But you sounding like you were drunk really only added to the fun 😂 So thanks for the amazing inspiration you give with your beautiful art and thank you for sharing the knowledge you have!❤

Sarah, l love to watch your videos as you joyfully paint, interspersed with so much in depth information about every aspect of your medium. Which brings me to asking about something you mentioned in one of your gouache programs. The stay wet palette you demonstrated used a dampened paper that has a slick side, making it easier to mix the gouache, rather than the absorbent Masterson paper. I’ve tried to find the video in which you described this slick paper, but alas no luck. I’m hoping this request reaches you, as this information would be most helpful to me as I try to make my foray into this medium a pleasant one. Thank you ever so much for responding to my inquiry.

i really enjoyed seeing all of your sketches!! i think they look so good against the tan paper! stillman & birn's sketchbooks are amazing, i've used the beta and delta ones so far and i'm very tempted to try one of these out!! i think it would be especially good to stop myself from neglecting my gouache in favor of watercolor haha. also, i especially loved your mt. rainier painting! i went a couple of summers ago and can totally relate to pining for it, but first i'm actually heading to scotland! since i started watching your videos i've been dying to go, and it's extra cool to see all the notes of locations in your sketchbook and actually kinda have an idea of where they are geographically thanks to planning out my trip :D

What a joy to wake up to this morning! Thank you, as always, for providing so much inspiration & sharing so much of your work (AND self) with us, Sarah. 🤗 PS - Tagging you in the hopes you’ll see this, @Sarah Burns Studio. I’d left a question in the comments a cpl weeks ago, but doubt you saw it…going to try asking again here: Do you know if you’ll be re-releasing the Craftamo monthly box subscriptions at any point in the near future? I missed the initial release by a hair (which I’m still kicking myself over). I’d *really* like to support you (AND receive what appears to be fantastic supplies!) if at all possible, & have held off on buying gouache in the hopes it’d re-launch…possibly at the 6 month mark, for example. While I *did* sign up to be notified by Craftamo if/when back in stock, idk if it’s something that’s never going to be re-started, in which case I’d still like to buy your brushes. Could you please reply with any info you have re: “new” subscription box signups? Tysm again for ALL you do for us!

The design elements of the pages of your sketchbook. as well as the useful bits of information you add, including swatches of the color mixes you used are so creative as well as pleasant to look at. I'll be watching this video a few more times! What you do with color and light is amazing---the landscapes really come to life! Your work gives me a better sense of place because you capture the uniqueness, and the personalities of the things that you paint--- trees, rocks, sky, flora, fauna, architecture etc. Makes me want to visit those places! Your incredible compositions pull me in so that I almost feel as if I've been there. Thanks for the inspiration! While I was watching the aurora from my porch in NC last night, I thought that you must be having the time of your life in your location. The display of the aurora there must have been mind blowing! I hope you got to see it and savor the beauty!

I just loved this! For the past couple of years I have been sketching plants, flowers, trees etc. Taking pictures of things in my yard. We have a wet land on this property. It is heavily wooded. We are in Pennsylvania. This is very different than Colorado. I lived in the Denver metro area. I wasn't really into sketching the outdoors then. It's just interesting taking a closer look/study at things. I love your work. You inspire me. I am 65 years old and have just been returning to my art since 2015. It's just for me. Personal. I enjoy it. Thank you. I look forward to what you will share in the future.

Great sketchbook tour! 👍👍When you return to Washington..two great places for trees are The Grove of the Patriarchs at Mt. Rainier..and The Hoh Rainforest at The Olympic National Forest..yep.. a rainforest!! …there is a YT video with a virtual walk through the main trail that leaves the Visitor Center there.. talk about Fangorn Forest! lol…. It is totally MAGICAL. Another fabulous hike is Cape Disappointment at Neah Bay..the walk down to the viewpoint is through a very serious Fae Forest! The coastal rocks/ caves there are amazing!

I love this sketchbook, but the problem I have is when I take it out to paint if I fold the page over it dents the previous picture by the binding. At least in the beginning when you first turn the first few pages. But sometimes I need to fold it. So I thought maybe I should be getting one with the binder in the middle. But I really like the flexibility and lightness of this book and the nice toned pages. And yes, I also realized that a lot of water buckles the pages so you are better off to use gouache instead of your watercolor.

Really enjoyed your sketchbook review! Loved seeing your process and look forward to checking out your linked videos to see the details on some of the sketches. (I did apples in acrylic once and it was a real challenge for me-I am a hobbyist artist) I am especially fond of the floral sketches and look forward to seeing more of those in the future. I know you are working on florals Yay! (you do such lovely florals already, btw), and I am so impressed by your detail and beautiful rendering of the flowers. I have learned so much from all the artwork and information you share; thanks for all you do, Sarah.

Excited to watch this tour! A little while ago I bought the same sketchbook because your videos inspired me to try different coloured paper with gouache and S&B sketchbooks are just amazing. I got a smaller one, but not spiralbound. So far I have barely used it, I was a bit shocked when I opened the sketchbook. The paper looks so much darker than I expected! So that scared me off. I am determined to break through that feeling though, it's a beautiful sketchbook.

Hullo Sarah, I have not found or decided on my gouache of choice! I have never met an Artist that uses ONLY one brand, unless they are sponsored by or an ambassador to that brand. I have been converted to DaVinci Watercolors of California Paints! I have heard some not so nice things said about their gouache, so I have not invested in any colors yet. I did buy their white gouache to use with my watercolor paints. I am trying to break a lifelong habit of NEVER painting with white in watercolor! I have the most experience with Turners Design Gouache, yet that is from 4 years of purgatory at a design firm that I truly don’t want to use. I did see the video listing of comparison brands of gouache. I will have to watch. Do you actually recommend a brand? I have always been reluctant to do that very thing, every person has their own preferences for what they want in and from a paint! Thank you for sharing this lovely painting book with us.

Yes, Stilman and Birn make books for wet media like watercolor. It’s their Zeta or Beta series. I mainly watercolor and am in love with their Zeta series.
@DanniGeee
@DanniGeee 2 ай бұрын
Just tagging in to agree with Danita, & hopefully add a bit more info (as one’s literally in my lap rt now). The Beta series has white, 270gsm cold-press paper, vs the Zeta Series, which has the same specs except for the paper being hot-press. The “cold press” in the Beta is some of the smoothest I’ve used, but it’s still a lovely option in the realm of “non-cotton sketchbooks.” FWIW, I’ve also used watercolor in the 150gsm Alpha Series with no issues, other than some minor buckling (mostly flattened once dry). I haven’t used the toned paper version of Sarah’s journal, but it’s the Nova Series, & S&B show it as having the exact same stats, save the color of the paper, as the Alpha. It performed really well for line & wash, media testing, & color swatching (much better than I’d ever have anticipated), with no bleed-through or pilling. I’d still lean towards Beta/Zeta if you’re primarily going for wet mediums, but their sketchbooks seem to be really well-made.
@DanitaReynolds
@DanitaReynolds 2 ай бұрын
And I’ll add to Danni’s comment that S&B books come in a variety of sizes and in spiral bound as well as perfect bound and hardcover too. Go check out their website for more info about their books. I have played with S&B Nova Trio which has black, grey, and beige colored pages. It is 150 gsm in paper weight and while it can take some watercolor you really can’t do layers plus most watercolor doesn’t really show well on colored paper but it works great with gouache, colored pencils, caran d’dache, some gel pens, pastels. Beta & Zeta series is 270 gsm paper weight. Much thicker and better for watercolor.
