I think he is talking about the handle when he said " wooden nib ". the nib is the metal tip and in my years of drawing with dip pens, I never heard of a wooden nib but yes to a wooden or plastic handle.

My favorite nib holder is the Tachikawa Comic Pen Nib Holder (T-40)--very comfortable and well balanced. I find my hand doesn't cramp up when using it for extended periods of time.

I just got several boxes full of calligraphy stuff from someone who’s parent used to used to do calligraphy. Haven’t had a chance to look it over yet, and I expect most of it won’t be usable. Since it’s been sitting in a garage for a decade or longer, (and I think the wife mentioned something about a flood). But I’m still excited to get into calligraphy. I’ll probably look through the stuff this weekend.

Thanks for the informative video! I was wondering, do you think cardstock would work good with a g pen? I have some thick, matte, smooth cardstock that I love to use with my alcohol markers, and I was wondering if it would be good for dip pens as well

I enjoy your videos. Besides being a talented artist you are an equally The same small bottle of India Ink here is Asia cost is only $1 and the 20 sheets 9 x 12 100 lb paper pad. is $4. We have the metal nibs and nib holders pen shafts but we often draw with plentiful handmade bamboo at a cost of 30 cents apiece.

Chetna, what matters more than the nib is the ink. if you're going to be adding watercolours over your ink and you don't want the ink to smear, you need to use a waterproof ink, such as India ink. You can use a dip pen or brush with that. Alternatively, you can use the pentel pocket brush pen, a versatile little pen that uses India ink. Again, this won't smear with either wash or watercolours.

seems to me you should be able to use one of those, they're pointy. I hear they are great to use to apply masking fluid to watercolor paper because easy to clean off and you don't ruin a brush

@@recoveringsoul755 What a great idea. I saw a quick video on how easy glass pens pens were to clean. I want to brush up on my drawing skills, before going into paints. Maybe have several nibs with wood holder, one glass dip pen, and watercolor paints and paper.

@@garyleewebb I took a calligraphy class in summer school I think around Jr High. It was fun. We just used speedball holders and nibs. Somewhere I got a set and some ink but not sure where they are now. But it was the wide nib not the pointy one. I'm sure those aren't the right names, lol

@@recoveringsoul755 I have several books on drawings by the Masters. They used Reed pens with gall ink. whose lines would change color over the years, because of the iron in the ink. We don't have ready access to birds to make quill pens, nor near marshes to get reeds. But at least we have art stores online. None of my forays into art involved nibs and ink, so it's both scary and exciting to try it out.

I think Speedball is acrylic ink, but they write "india ink" as a common thing to say "black ink". India ink is with shellac. You can use with dip pens but you need to clean them a lot, because shellac will clog the nib with its crusty texture when it's dry.
