Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Today's sketch is from the Netherlands. It's a narrow street, and I love how the shadow and light pool along streets like this. The perfect urban sketching, ink and watercolour/watercolor scene to draw!
Capturing the line work loosely means the scene comes together quickly, before we go back and add some contrasts and details.
I'm using a fountain pen for this sketch, but I'd just as happily use a fine liner :)
With our watercolours, we'll focus today on how to capture the light and shadows, varying our shadow colour, washing light into areas, and making deeper contrasts in others.
Shadows themselves emphasise the light, and these simple tips will help you get the right shape and feel in these fun street urban sketches!
Enjoy!

Hi Toby, I have just discovered your channel. As a 'beginner' (2 years in!) your style and tutorials are just what I needed to help me break away from detail and 'colouring in'. My old mill town has some fantastic buildings but all of my inspirational reference photos have been stuck in a file until I 'get better' at drawing and painting. That changed yesterday when I discovered your work! Thank you so much! I'm hooked! Creative neural pathways are firing on all cylinders now, this is just the boost I needed:)

I have been subscribed to and following your videos for a while. I really struggle to get that lose line look. Even though I struggle to draw a straight line, I find that I cannot just let myself go and draw this lose. It is quite frustrating 🤣 I am just up the road from you in Peterborough but as yet, not visited your hometown. Thanks for the work in doing these videos and showing what is possible if only I could get over my irrational fear of deliberately drawing lose wobbly lines😊🙏

You could try drawing with your non-dominant hand. Or try one line drawing. Or looking at your reference photo, and not looking down at your drawing. Or a combination of all three. Good luck.

I was just like you but I am now finding drawing a loose line easy. Having said that it did involve me having a stroke so this may not appeal to you as a way forward. In which case Drew's advice may be more appealing.

Hi Graham - thanks for the comment, and great to hear from somewhere pretty local! Thanks very much, also, for the Kofi - gratefully received. For me, doing little timed sketches is my favourite way of loosening up. Also, purposefully making mistakes, of messing with the perspective (e.g. using wonky vertical lines - great little dicscussion below here too with lots of different ideas!

I’m learning so much from your channel, especially in how to loosen up. ❤Thanks. So interesting the way you change the perspective and only make approximations of what is in the photo. This seems to bring depth to your painting 🤔 I was interested also in the frame you drew at the end… I liked that.

Just discovered your videos. I live near a very remote village here in New Zealand. As you would be aware we don’t have the beautiful historic buildings one finds in the UK and Europe. However what we have are some of NZ’s oldest colonial buildings and they are beautiful. Many are built in a lovely regency/gothic style. Even though our region’s population is less than 70,000 we are a very popular tourist destination and our local artist community do very well during our summer months. No one here does street art and l have been practicing, however having worked as a fine line illustrator in a previous life, my work is too controlled. I need to loosen up so l can draw as beautifully and as freely as you do. I have watched videos by several artists and your presentation is really good. Thank you for your inspiration - l will definitely like and subscribe

Mordor? Them houses look a bit big for the shires. Also I know it has been sometime since I read Lord Of The Rings but I am pretty sure there was no mentions of Gandalf riding his bike. And I don't think Bilbo would have been too happy sitting in the child seat behind Gandalf. I am still of the opinion that leaving the picture unframed is a better way to go. Without the frame you are left with the feeling that there is more out there. Thanks, Toby.

This is lightly cold pressed - an no not 100% cotton. I save that for 'real watercolours' as these loose washes don't need super heavy paper :)
