Whilst skiing in Austria last week we were taken by an instructor on a 'Blue Run'. Part way down we hit a steep part of the piste and a couple of turns navigating down another skier not under instruction and completely out of control flew over the top of the hill and hit (took out) one of the other skiers (4:32) - watch the instructor go mental at the other skier and start hitting him with his ski pole!
The whole incident was caught on my GoPro Hero +3 - such a an amazing piece of equipment.

I thought some of the performances could have been a little more, I dunno, nuanced, maybe? But the deep themes and contextual juxtaposition made for a fascinating watch nonetheless.

Had that happen in Val Thorens once; ski instructor caught him against the edge of the piste, turned in front and simply held out his hand and said "pass". Was only midweek so just took €150 worth off this guy and left him there in the middle of the slopes. Got to love ski guides sometimes =D

How didnt he manage to see the group of people ahead? I am usually going faster than this dude and never ever got even close to crashing into someone ahead of me. Blue skies, good conditions. The group may have been slow, which is ok IMO, there's still plenty of space to pass savely… everyone makes mistakes but wow… I hope it didn't ruin this beautiful day at a beautiful ski resort

I know- I just wanted to declare that it wasn't my purpose to sound smart. I make skiing mistakes too from time to time usually not very often but when I do it's always funny to watch xD I guess… I remember the other day when I was 15 or something I was just STANDING on the side of the slope and with my left ski I accidently slipped over my ski stick and slipped down the entire slope (1 kilometer :D) and when I arrived at the end of the slope I was fulf of snow… and shit also xD just kidding… The thing is that often when we go skiing we want to prove others our abilities and compare ourselves with others and stuff but that's really not the purpose of skiing, is it? It's when we get rit of this skiing beginns to be much more joyful and fun, no matter if you're going fast or slow...
@DerpingTurtle

+Andreas Hoppe Because your someone who thinks he's fast. If you were actuary fast you would know that when a group like them is blocking the entire fucking run it's pretty hard to doge. Your group is dumb as fuck. Don't make a fucking line across the run that faster people can't avoid. Holy fuck. If you block the whole run what the fuck do you think is going to happen. If your that fucking slow/shit at skiing go do the fucking bunny hill where you belong.

How can you judge my skiing skills when you haven't even seen me ski at all?? I've been skiing all my life since I was 3 years old I can ski on any slope. I can ski any hill, whether it is on the slope or in deep snow … I am not saying I was the best skier in the world because that would be wrong and ignorant. But that's not what skiing all about unless you're a ski racer. It's about enjoying your day in the alps and skiing can be really fun and should be. But I am confident enough to ski at a fast pace without crashing into other people … and I this dude is not even close to being fast and this hill's not even steep at all!!! He's the one who's out of control.

Amazing how some idiots look to pass blame to the instructor and try and apply the rules of the road to the slopes?! Clearly the accident was caused solely by the on-rushing skier with relatively little experience, out of control, not looking ahead at what was happening downhill (which a skier would have observed from 500 metres up slope). If you can accurately apply any driving 'rules' to the slopes it is that whoever is behind will almost always be at fault (singular exception that comes to mind is a driver not indicating and moving into a right hand lane cutting across a car in that lane. (note it does not apply to a car moving left without signalling as that would be the fault of the on-coming vehicle for overtaking on the inside). Anyway, clearer rules on the slopes ... don't ski into anyone and if you can't ski that well go slowly so you can stay in control.

I liked it. It took me back to the time when I could tell I was getting better day by day, whereas now I am getting worse year by year. KZfaq is full of GoPro footage of knarly dudes shredding it (as I believe they phrase it in the vernacular) This was much more typical. And, in my opinion, the uphill skier had no excuse. And the downhill skier doesn't need any excuse. Unless, of course, the uphill skier was failing to save his own fall. Which is a strong possibility.

This reminds me of when I was skiing on a wide slope a couple of years ago, doing regular carved turns, and a guy skiing faster than he could control hit me from behind so hard it knocked me out. I think some people travel at speeds greater than where they are able to turn or stop from - and get such tunnel vision they can't pay attention to what is in front of them.

Point of information. This is Austria. They don't do Green runs, they only have Blue, Red and Black. And very few Austrian blacks would be Black in France (with exceptions). Blue runs are 100% where beginners ought to be learning. And it's your job to ski round them. I love skiing in Austria, only 7 days to go :-).

As a novice skier, I WANT my instructor to go nuts on anyone who wipes me out, when it's clear I'm a student under instruction. Knowing that I'm a novice, I try to keep my turns regular, and my speed constant, while I work on my technique, so that I'm predictable and anybody uphill can see what I'm about to do. Anybody who bowls into a student group like that (a line of people carefully following an instructor is obviously a class) deserves a good thumping. If you cannot control your speed, you should not be on a blue, and you should probably be in ski school yourself.

So wait... You think the students down the slope were to blame for taking the whole width of the slope? The slope belongs to the people ahead of you - it's not your private playground. You realize it's your responsibility to make sure the area ahead of you is safe to ski into, right? And how exactly do people downslope "appear out of nowhere"? Were these students from Hogwarts practicing magical rematerialization? Maybe in future you should inform the ski instructors which parts of the slope are off limits to the people in front of you. When they stop laughing, maybe they'll teach you how to behave on the mountain.

to be fair the skiiers were snaking in THE MIDDLE OF THE SLOPE!! and the snake they were doing was huge. the rider was probably just a normal rider going at a normal, fast pace like i do and didn't have the time to react. imagine suddenly being faced with a maze of humans all slowly and unpredictably moving in one direction, there is a slight moment of panic and maybe the rider just misjudged where he needed to go. it happens from time to time and i think the instructor should have done a tighter snake bcuz there are also fast people on pistes and dumb ppl and the instructor should have taken that into account. the rider himself is also very much at fault but the blame should be spread 25:25:50 going by Intructor:Skiier:Rider

+StudioStuff This is the dumbest post Ive read on you tube. First off the skiier below you has the RIGHT OF WAY. It is the uphill skiiers responsibility to avoid the skiier below them. This is the same as being in a car on a highway. Skiier Responsibility Code (yes I know they are in Austria) Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment. Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. The instructor is using a wider "Snake" so the students slow down by turning across and up the hill. This gives them time to prepare for the next turn. Very useful when the pitch is steeper. If they did tighter turns the students could increase their speed and ski out of control. These students motion is about as predictable as it gets. The person that caused the accident is liable for any medical bills incurred during this accident. This person also should go back to the beginner area and sign up for a lesson.
@Ezox2408
@Ezox2408 8 жыл бұрын
Daymon Gray right. first off i know that he is technically liable for what has happened but i know what might have went through his head. what happened is a bit like if a person catches his girlfriend cheating on his best friend and beats his girlfriend into a pulp. yes, it is his fault for ALL the damage caused but also it is understandable to a certain extent. now im not saying that this was the same thing as a murder or as assault but its the idea of how i, and others, can relate to him. and yes, i get it, legally he is the one responsible but to be fair he just didn't want to stop EVERY SINGLE 3 MINUTES because some instructor wanted ton make sure his students didn't go too fast( this is perfectly fine, i know) so if you want to prioritise safety, lets just not ski because when skiing accidents happen every day. you know what lets also not drive cars because that shit is dangerous. my point is that risks have to be taken for ANYTHING to be fun(personally speaking) and the judgement of some of those risks means that only a couple of inches will seperate me from the next skiier. most of the time it works out but from time to time, shit happens. also, in regard to the snake, the instructor was could have done a tighter snake and just made his students take longer to do it. doing a snake doesn't mean you have to complete each turn quicker and quicker the tighter it gets. all im saying is that the snake should have been a litttle tighter to not block up the F***ING piste.

+StudioStuff A typical Austrian ski school is a long slow snake in the middle of the slope. Crashing in them in Austria because u didn't expect them is like chrashing against a tree in the woods, because u didn't expect them :DD Im in Austria every winter, so I can also say that mostly it's very easy to overtake them even in higher speeds because they are very predictable and leave some space (here on the right side).

POV: you catch the low side of the piste on a sloped pow in the middle of January on a 13.5 degree binding gear adjusted to 286.33 nanonewtons of torque on an inclined, rope side, A-gap 3.5 centered offset while accounting for a drop shoulder of 37 degrees northwest side all while the passenger side-most skier has 13.6 degree bindings coupled with an incline torque acceleration ratio of 3.56:2:87. Do you prefer 13.6 or the 13.5 degree incline adjust with accelerated drag momentum to accommodate the low side piste on a cold winter day when carving ski deflection is lowest?

Being an instructor, you take the health of your students very seriously. I know people who have been paralyzed because of people who ski out on control. Skiing slow and in control is harder than skiing out of control. You are responsible for avoiding ANYONE DOWNHILL OF YOU. The problem is the newest generation of skiers/snowboarders are not taught the "responsibility code". If you don't follow the code, it's like driving down the road and ignoring all signs and signals...Collisions should be RARE on the ski slope. Falling is a risk, but collisions should not be. If you can't control yourself to avoid other people, you need a lesson or stay on the bunny hill until you can master that. I've had too many close calls where someone who has no business being on a double black almost took me out. One bad collision can end the sport for some. My Dad is 73 and got taken out last year at Breckenridge. Could have ended his life, luckily he was not badly hurt. Control first, then speed

So many people here and other videos comparing a run to a highway. From now on, you're only allowed to pass on the left side and you must slow down when riding on the right side of a run. And use hand signals to indicate your turns. Seriously... we're skiing/snowboarding here, not commuting to work.

Hit a lady once at Copper Mountain when I was in college.....was sure I was going to get sued. Tight, Icy run at the end of the day and in a hurry and boom, blew her up! Fortunately, she was just a little sore but no injuries. Take er easy out there.

That ski school is taking so much room up on the piste FairPlay the blokes out of control but still ski schools in my experience always cut across piste and don’t look at their surroundings and look in front of them

I agree, here in western pa we have some nice resorts but not as beautiful as this one. One issue here in 2023 is the weather has been unusually warm and makes the snow conditions sluggish.

How in the f*** can you hit somebody on a ski slope that's traveling that slow? It's almost impossible not to be able to avoid them. That person was clearly a novice and not a real skier

Comments on these videos always blow my mind. People blaming downhill skiers for being too slow or turning too wide. o_O I've been skiing and snowboarding for 30+ years and I've never had a problem tapping the breaks and being patient when navigating around people who are learning. If you are such an awesome skier then it shouldn't be a problem and if you aren't such an awesome skier then maybe you should slow the hell down and ski in control until you get better.

+Matthew Ford he can't do that, as long as there is no one injured, there is pretty much no law on austrian pistes. The only real law is that you may not escape if you hit someone, you can get punished for that. There is not even a law against "drunk skiing" xD

+Matt.. There is no "special" law that is correct, but every other law applies, if you hurt someone and don't help them, that is illegal no matter if you are on a ski piste or wherever.

So many ignorant people giving the car taking up multiple lanes in the highway example, that’s very flawed. They’re beginners, so they’re like what you would be practicing in the parking lot. The highway is the more advanced terrain, the people who have been driving for a long time and have experience. The instructor is the parent teaching their kid to drive (in the parking lot). Downhill skier/boarder has the right of way, no matter what. No argument, go ask the patrollers or staff at your mountain if you’re that fucking ignorant.

Common for out-of-control skiers who think they are good at skiing because they are fast. Often cussing out slower skiers who are "in their way". A good skier would never has caused this accident.
