Philip is doing an amazing job running that 630...he has obviously been taught well...he is still learning and will be a very good operator in no time.

There is just something about massive powerful machines. I grew up around phosphate mines and they had some huge equipment they used. I would sit and watch them for hours. Never grew out of that. LOL.

A great learning experience for Philip. He deserves a full wage for the work he does. Thanks for sharing.

You should ask Phillip sometime if he knows how truly fortunate he is to have all this big machinery available to him, although he may not feel that way in 30 years or so. All I had was Tonka trucks and graders, haha. So good to see him learning the log woods rather than playing on a Nintendo game.

Phillip you lucky lucky boy, I am currently 16 and it would be a dream to be in your place, cuz flipping burgers is no fun and there is no logging in my area but I sure hope to join you and the rest of the logging community out there in the brush sometime soon - Evan

@bigwheelsblacksmoke46246 жыл бұрын
Regarding the comment at the end about tyre chains, I don't think that you would want to run tyre chains in the conditions that you were working in for the simple reason that tigercat did their calculations on how strong the drive train components have to be assuming that the tyres are going to spin when you ask the machine to pull more than it can, and this is basically the slip clutch or safety in the system that stops you from breaking drive lines or chewing up center portions. When you create a situation of lets call it excessive traction by using chains in good conditions you create a situation where there is far more torque in the whole drive train than was anticipated in the original machine design, and that is when you start eating up centre portions like you did in the 635 some time back.
@cotontop36 жыл бұрын
You are spot on and I wish others would understand that. It also depends on who is running the machine.
@carolinafarmweld59816 жыл бұрын

Young Philip is going to be a master operator in no time Tim, and good on him for his dedication to the logging industry. Hey Tim would the chains you were talking about save any extra wear on the tyres at all? Or are they simply for grip. Later tater.
@cotontop36 жыл бұрын
Just for grip.

@bigfoot-wo3qy6 жыл бұрын
Chains and tracks take the slip out. Joints drive shafts finals etc. work that much harder when the wheels won’t slip. A little wheel slip vs breaking expensive parts is way better in my opinion.
@Seveneleven446 жыл бұрын

So who takes home the bigger check, Phillip or his Dad. LOL... You know you really should be running tracks with chains to get the best traction... Up here it's rare to see a skidder without chains. Not sure if it's a requirement or tradition. Most of the places look drier than where you're working but there are a lot of narrow side hill tracks as well.
@rodmurphy2726 жыл бұрын

Just wondering why don't yall run up the trees (from top to butt) to break off some of the limbs would also make a little bit lighter drag. The guy I use to work for would harp on doing that. It also helped the delimber out. Of course we just had the trailer mounted drag though delimber. Just wondering if you get a chance to answer. Thx for the great video!!

I'm still shocked how steep it is in mississippi, are the tracked skitters like bell and cat not really for bigger wood in these conditions

How long do the skidder tires last before you have to replace them. I thought you replaced the tires on the 635 in a previous video. They look really worn coming up the hill.

I have so many questions
@dexterscott336 жыл бұрын
With all the benefits of a grapple and its obvious superiority, it leads me to question why anyone would ever get a new cable skidder instead of a grapple skidder?
@cotontop36 жыл бұрын
There are still places where a cable skidder is needed.
@dexterscott336 жыл бұрын
cotontop3 I would assume super tight spots where you could get through with a cable instead of a grapple? What do I know, I am just a Wisconsin accountant bahaha
@cotontop36 жыл бұрын
They’re still a good many of them run in rough ground where they side cut steep slopes with dozers.
@gregbraddy14976 жыл бұрын
I know terrain has a lot to do with the distance you have to drag wood, so it looks like you are draging wood a long way because of the terrain.
