The second descent of the iconic Caroline face of Mt Cook on 21/10/2021. Riders - Joe Collinson, Will Rountree, Sam Smoothy. We gained the E ridge after skinning in front of the E face and climbed to middle peak, 9 hour total (the last 300m or so was WI2/3 ice so we pitched this section). We maed an 80m rappel from porter col onto the face and we super stoked to find perfect stable boot top powder the whole way down the 2000m face. A further 80m rap through the cetral serac band to the lower face. Here the overhead hazard from seracs was huge, so we skiied out to the exit as fast as we could. So stoked to get this line done, many years of planning and waiting for the perfect conditions to line up! Huge kudos to Tom Grant, Ben Briggs and Enrico Mosetti for the first descent of this line in 2017

@@joecollinson6232 how did you find skiing with the ice axes in hand at the 1 minute mark? I've often wondered whether doing so with the axes strapped to the poles might make it a little easier to handle.
@joecollinson6232
@joecollinson6232 2 жыл бұрын
@@LukeFrisken yep its a tricky one - my personal take on skiing with axes is that if you fall when actually skiing at any speed on steep terrain theres zero chance your going to self arrest with it, so for me the use of the axes are 1) if you hit a slightly firm / icy bit when going slowly you can stop, dagger in the pick and help yourself sidestep down and 2) if you hit a bare patch of glacier ice just under the snow (what we were really scared of on this route) you can swing tools in and clip to them to let you get some screws / anchor in and switch to crampons. that second job isnt possible if they are strapped to the poles, but the first one is. so depending on what your concerns are i do sometimes strap! on the caroline wanted full use of the tools so had to put up with holding onto both
@LukeFrisken
@LukeFrisken 2 жыл бұрын
@@joecollinson6232 Hi Joe, thanks great feedback! I've spent quite a bit of time mulling the ideas over in my head, and it's great to get your view. I was also figuring that the axe is almost useless for self arrest if for a fall awkwardly at speed, but it seems like having it holstered behind the shoulder can also be convenient for when it's needed without getting in the way too much of the ski movements.
@joecollinson6232
@joecollinson6232 2 жыл бұрын

I was actually in the hut with those guys when they skiied that line! Its a great line (we actually skiied it the next day after skiing the Caroline) but Im sure they would be the first to say it isnt a full descent of the Caroline. The gained the E ridge from the snowfields under the E face and then dropped straight down to the Caroline glacier from there, so only about half the way up and avoids all the serac bands of the upper and middle face. They came planning to ski the full caroline but it wasnt in condition that year - definitely the biggest challenge for us was waiting for everything to line up conditions wise

@joecollinson6232
@joecollinson6232 2 жыл бұрын
didnt leave too much stuff - picket at the summit and a v thread, then for the middle rap (which was 80m so 2x raps in a row) left thread at the top and a thread and 1x screw for the last one (left an old screw, to save a bit of time hanging out under that serac that was ready to collapse at any minute). Actually managed to get the rope stuck pulling that last rap so ended up cutting and leaving 20m of one of our ropes, again just wanted to get out of there asap 😅 is now a litte memento on the face you can see on the flight in

Thanks! I did use a prussik on the raps and would always advise using one! I extend my atc on my PAS and attach the prussik to the belay loop for these kind of raps. Cant quite see it in the vid! I personally prefer that to the prussik on leg loop as i feel to be a true backup it has to be attached to a rated part of the harness ie not the leg loop

We were waiting for a long time! Had been looking at the line throughout a few winters and spring for a line through the ice, and waiting for a specific weather pattern to come through for stability and the snow to actually stick to ice- but even with all that you don't know for sure until you go up there and have a look as it's pretty remote to even get to the face. so right up until we touched the snow on the line were ready to turn around !

@@joecollinson6232 Well nice work, that’s a crazy line, I’m keen to ski some bigger lines myself (not this big haha) but I’m finding it hard to time it as I’m from Australia, for lines that are not quite this challenging but still steep like Western face of aspiring, East face of mount cook or single cone, do you think I should just book a trip in advance in October/November and hope for the best when I’m there, or even for these lines is last minute timing really crucial?

@@Maximilian_1 nice those are great goals to work towards! yep I think thats the best approach - if you can book a few weeks off dedicated just to that, book it for the right time of year and then cross fingers things are going to line up, and accept you may well end up not doing your primary objective (but have a few plan Bs lined up so that not doing the primary objective doesnt feel like a failure!). Id say for the E face Cook generally mid to late october is the highest chance of success. W face aspiring I think is easier to find good conditions on - sept through october looking for cold snow (it got skiied this year in august) and right through to december to ski it in corn. Single cone pretty much throughout the season really, probably by oct would think its starting to get too late. But if you came with those 3 objectives in mind theres a good chance youll get one of them done!

@@joecollinson6232 Thanks heaps for the advice, yeah the biggest trouble I’ve had is just trying to time things, good to hear you don’t think I need to go last minute to have a decent chance of success.

Thanks!! Ah thats awesome is a great goal to have : Was a very cool climb, definitely worth doing just as a climb without any skiing. The E ridge is a more technical climb than the linda which is the most common way people go up, mostly steep snow but we had a few hundred metres of ice at the top (WI2 mostly, steps of WI3) which we pitched. Probably the most common thing from the top of the E ridge is to continue with the grand traverse across the top of cook over to high peak and then down the linda which would be an amazing day out

It often hard in NZ to get an accurate record of who first skiied what when (especially compared to Europe) - but the Caroline face probably has the most well documented history of any face in NZ and over the last decade had become a big focus for a number of high profile teams from around the world coming to try and get the first descent. After a number of unsuccessful attempts by very strong teams, Tom Grant, Ben Briggs and Enrico Mosetti competed their descent in October 2017 and was widely reported on by media across the world as the first decent. In 2019 Ross Hewit and Dave Searle skiied a line from the E ridge from just under half way up the Caroline, but no record of any other descents of the full face. But if someone had skiied it before that and kept it very under the radar would be great to know about it!

My son, I don't want to climb mountains, I 've heart that it's too dangerous. It's better to learn how to skiing. You would make me feel better.
