What Happens when A Pro BMX Rider goes to a Mountain Bike Park? Today we're riding one of my favorite bike parks Highland Mountain with Jay Dalton. Jay, is not only a very competent BMX rider, but he's also well versed on dirt bikes. For the past few years we've been trying to coordinate, but due to injuries on both of our parts, have only now been able to make that happen.

I love how respectful and nice Phil is to others on the trail. He doesn’t drop in right after people, he gives others room when he catches up to them, he doesn’t make people get out of his way… just such great etiquette.

That landing on the boards at 2:03 is amazing, made me flinch ;) Good comment on the behaviour of some riding very close to 'slower' riders. Just wait, no need to push or pressure someone else in making a mistake. Keep it up!

The rock garden Jay accidentally launched into is no joke. I’ve hit that creek gap 100 times and randomly got off line, blown off a pedal, and basically exploded into a season-stopper. 6” can be the difference between an easy gap or a full on man-eater on that thing.

I was a camper at Camp Woodward (PA) when scotty came through as a guest pro. It was super fun to watch him ride in person. It wasn't too much longer after that that I transitioned to MTB. It's weird and cool to see the BMX and MTB worlds finally crossing over a bit more.

@SkillsWithPhil Жыл бұрын
In your defense, suspension companies could do a way better job explaining this stuff. They use a lot of industry jargon. Thats why i made this video a while ago, though even that doesn't explain how those functions translate to the trail. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/psyeotSLvZbIZHk.html

Very nice video Phil! As for Jay, I have been watching his videos since his beginning.He needs a translator for his terms sometime. If he says that he is not good at something, it usually mean that he is still better than 90% of the people at it. If he as something dialed, well good luck trying to make it better than him.

Phil are you absolutely confident that the chair lift will not experience a mechanical failure during your lifts that you ride with the safety bar not engaged? If the chair comes to a sudden stop due to mechanical failure, how do you handle that? Myself, being a HVAC service tech, do not have that degree of confidence in mechanical devices not to fail.

Speaking of suspension settings, do you tend to run max tokens to get the most progressive feel to play and pop off everything like you do?
@SkillsWithPhil

I've dialed back how progressive my stuff is. Currently in my fork I'm running a single token, an maybe a little more air than I would in years past.

Kind of unrelated but how is it using an applewatch put when riding? I never noticed you wore one before and with the speed you go down is it confident to ride with it or would you rather take something like a garmin?
@SkillsWithPhil
@SkillsWithPhil Жыл бұрын
Most garmins are a bit too large and heavy for my liking, and fwiw i run the smaller apple watch. I wish it was a bit slimmer, but it works well for what i need. I have a bit of a bumper case on my to try and protect the screen a bit, but it's still pretty scratched from trail building and riding. I use the solo loop watch band as i found that not having a buckle as the bands with buckles dig into my wrist.

Is it ridiculous that I love downhill but I hate riding parks because I hate ski lifts? lol I hate heights and lifts legit make me nervous...any tricks to overcome this would be sick because I really want to ride more parks (I'm in CO). Homeboy is holding the handle like he isn't so sure as well lol I feel that
@SkillsWithPhil
@SkillsWithPhil 9 ай бұрын
I get vertigo near edges of cliffs, even big exposed rock faces make me nervous. Oddly enough chairlifts have never given me the same feeling. There's a safety bar that you can and should put down. But when you are on the lift, just look ahead, or to the side. As long as you don't look directly down, you don't realize how high up you are. If you have friends with you having a conversation is a good way to distract yourself. Another option is to find a smaller bike park, they often have smaller less intimidating lifts. If all else fails, there are bike parks that shuttle riders up the mountain in trucks/trailers. Wind rock, rock creek, coast gravity park are a few that come to mind.
