I got to speak with the developers of this game last year at PAX East, and when I told them that the relationship between yourself, the car, and the environment reminded me of Outer Wilds, they told me that was one of the best compliments they have received all day. At that point I knew this was a team that understood what they wanted to make, and it pleases me that they succeeded with flying colors.

Outer Wilds is one of the greatest games ever made, and I couldn't agree more. I am noticing quite a few similarities, in my playthrough. I have been waiting for a game like this, ever since I finished Outer Wilds. While games like What Remains of Edith Finch, Firewatch, Dear Esther, The Stanley Parable, etc... helped to scratch that itch, for a time... Nothing has come close to that Outer Wilds experience.

I was shocked by how much I liked the demo. Especially after having to do everything manually. But you really do get into a groove of parking. Hand braking. Turning the engine off. It’s just super satisfying. And the music was killer too

Ralph, That squealing is your fan belt slipping on a bad power steering pump pulley. I love the fact you drove it like that anyway. What a perfect Segway to this game I hope to get soon!

You don't know what car he had. Many cars don't don't use the same belt for the fan and power steering pump. and also it's most likely the pump that was bad and not the pump pulley.

You also disagreed with what was wrong by agreeing with what the other guy said was wrong, you just can't read. Roadside picnic was also adapted into the russian film Stalker, one of the greatest films of all time. A tragic irony, part of the filming took place in an abandoned factory and many of the people involved (including the director and the lead actor) died from cancer in the following years due to exposure to dangerous chemichals

@@SonOfLowKey I saw it 17 days ago and I don't get it. I bet if I saw Citizen Kane I'd find it to be a big question mark too. Maybe at the time it was important for their respective film industry but as something to watch, Stalker was meh. Strange and boring. Or maybe drawn out and boring is more apt. A day or so before that I had Roadside Picnic audiobook playing in the background and it definitely isn't something that's just good because someone says so. It was also meh, granted I didn't get through that one entirely and I probably never will. But the movie I did and it wasn't for me. Maybe if you're older you won't know, but this reminds me of Elden Ring. Something so supposedly great everyone has to like it, there is no way someone can dislike it. A fantasy I am unsure how one can live in truthfully.

29:35 loose/old powersteering belt by the sounds bro. Deadheading the steering motor by full locking the steering can spike pressure causing the pump to have resistance and your belt will slip. Can also be fixed by playing with your relief valve or changing the oil for something thinner. Id recommended atf oil.

my car had this rapid-fire clunking sound on the right, that increased in speed the faster I accelerated. like 4-6 per second at 30mph, and machine gun fire on the highway. after 2 days I heard a snap, like a breaking rubber band, then the sound disappeared completely am I okay or is my wheel about to fall off? pls advise

I had the same exact problem in my wrx and the pump eventually went out so I just bypassed the pump with a shorter belt from the crank to the alternator

Made me really happy as well. Books are totally out of fashion nowadays, always warms my heart when someone gives a shout-out to such important authors as the Strugatzki brothers. If anyone here who is into "Roadside Picnic" hasn't yet read "Hard to be a God", absolutely do it. They always manage to create so much depth behind seemingly action-adventure books.

@@anthonylesley982 Picking up this book (and the Strugatskis in general) might be the biggest thing you can do for your personal development today. I read all their stuff, they shaped me like no other book, movie or piece of music. People often recommend classic Russians like Dostoewsky, Tolstoi or others but frankly that shit UNREADABLE. There might be some wisdom in those books, but it's so unbelievable boring. Strugatskis on the other hand are always fun and engaging at first, but the more you think about it, the deeper it gets.

I have been a fan of Shill Up for quite a while now but I honestly feel like he have recently leveled up in his reviews. He was good before but I feel like he is more comfortable to talk about games as an artform now and goes deeper in his analysis. Yeah generally I watch Skillup reviews after I beat the game if it's as story and experience based as this one, but just look at the title of the video and Steam review percentage to get an idea of what the public's perception of the game is. I love Ralph but he can overexplain some story or gameplay components to the point of spoiling stuff which isn't necessary to be explained for a review. On multiplayer or games where story is less important that's chill and I watch them as they come out, but for a game like this I'm absolutely glad I waited to beat it to watch the review.

@@Sirrincai So I bought and finished the game and then watched this video later. And I am SO glad I didn't watch the video footage or even listen to it after the first 4 minutes earlier. Shill Up explained and showed WAY TOO MUCH here. Also, this review is way too long for such a game and he still somehow didn't cover the issues with the game although they are not egregious.

It might not seem like it but Ralph is an extremely skilled reviewer becuase he understands the economy of words. I admire you as an artist when it comes to reviews because you know when to be ulititarian and when to creatively channel your linguistic resources and masterful writing to pay the respect that respective games deserve. You have all the craft of a skiled writer and none of the snobbery. I love your work through and through! You dont just review, you make choice artistic decisions!

@anthonylesley982 Depends, it's not the easiest read, lotta run-on sentences. Are you a fan of SCP? Because it very much feels like a group dealing with a single SCP. People say book 2 is the worst since not much really happens, but it's my favorite of the series. Book 1 is an introduction, book 2 is about trying to understand, and book 3 is madness and feelings.

i love this channel so much. It's sort of everything i ever wanted a gaming outlet to be: enamored with games as an artform, mostly conflict-of-interest free, experimental, impassioned, critical of corporate influence, etc. bravo to you lads

Once, when my headlights were broken, I needed to use flares to see the path forward. I threw one ahead after looting a building, towards another building. I turned around to get in the car to follow the path where the flare landed, then as I opened the door, the flare came back and smacked agained my car. I threw it again... and something threw it back... again. There was a group of tourists where I threw the flare... The flare only came back when I wasn't looking at it.

I really, really, really hope they make a VR version of this game. It's perfect for it! Also, it feels like triple-A gaming is dead, and indie games and double-A games are saving us.

All of the reviews you do from suicide squad,Anthem, destiny etc. its reviews like these where I can really discern your excitement and passion in this industry. I’ve thought about personally doing these sorts of video game reviews but when I see videos like these where your ideas are so perfectly captured in the way you disect what makes these games so great I would have nothing new to bring to conversation. That ending for the video genuinely sent a chill down my spine in the best way possible. With Final End Times in my ears, I was smiling ear to ear like a madman as I added the game to my cart. For me it draws comparisons to void bastards, the quirks that affect your car are like quirks that affect your character in void bastards where your character was a smoker and therefore sometimes coughs randomly which alerts enemies close to you. Tourists are like tourists in void bastards as well, enemies that explode when you get close and of course using random junk you find on runs to make upgrades. Watching this makes me wanna play start a new game n get out into the void.

I love this review primarily because your description of the appreciation of maintenance of your jalopy perfectly describes my life long love of working on cars. Taking a car far beyond it's designed life expectancy is deeply rewarding, not just financially but emotionally as well.

I remember seeing this game years ago in very early access. It was a completely different game where you hunted down giant monsters and leviathans. Crazy how far this game has come. Everything about it looks so interesting! I’m very excited to play this!

The problem with that is, it wouldn't be that good of an experience, play the demo, you do constantly get out your car and go scavenging, you'd have to switch between your wheel and a controller/mouse and keyboard constantly. Not to mention you have to move the camera with the mouse and look at things to turn them on and off; windscreen wipers and handbrake etc

OK the Roadside Picnic analogy was I all needed. I 100% agree that people should read that story. The one chapter that is basically just a philosophical discussion about what intelligence is and how we aren't equipped to fully identity or measure it after such an event, gets me every time I go back and read it. Great review. I'll definitely be picking it up.

Escape from Tarkov is heavily inspired by Roadside Picnic. Tarkov comes from the filmmaker Tarkovsky who adapted Roadside Picnic into a film and called it Stalker. Also a great film.

The idea that driving a car across The Pacific Northwest is made compelling is a testament to how much mileage you can squeeze out of an idea. Rather than being a simple Point A to Point B adventure, what you outline about the game is an exploration into Nostalgia for vehicles and their Quirks. The connections you make with your first car will always stick with you, as I could feel the passion you had for that garbage station wagon with every concession you made in love for it. Well done, SkillUp.

Watching a Skill Up review isn't just a review, you come to watch a well scripted movie that's passionately narrated and always starts with an amazing analogy to set the tone of the review. It's sometime hard to believe this is they guy I first watched when the division came out, and he was doing the weekly vendor reviews.
