I hear that bud, as a kid my room was at the end ot the hallway and my room had a big window behind me and a closet right infront of the door, at the end of the hall there was a bathroom that imited blue light, even if I made it past all that the living room was connected to the backyard patio which you could see total darkness outside from the glass door, the basement, front door and the garage which had the attic were situated behind me so to my infront of me I have my hallway imiting that ominous light and the kitchen which also connects to the backyard, to my right I have the same view of the back of my house in total darkness, and behind me lurked two of the scariest places in the house, anywhere I went I felt vulnerable, I used to have night terrors so bad my family said I kept trying to escape the house in my sleep, screaming.

i remember as a kid being terrified and always feeling uneasy at my uncles old condo never knowing why. and then once i got older i remember telling my mom about how the condo was always creepy and thats when she told me some guy hung himself in that condo before my uncle got it 😭😭

The toys and the furniture… to me personally those small changes from the beginning signified the distortion of changes in the children… the kids were trying to cope with their abuse and fear.. so subliminally they saw these changes take place which was otherworldly to us because we didn’t see beneath.. which is some of the true terror that comes with.. the empty house

This reminds me of one time I spent a couple nights in an empty house. With all the furniture gone, sound would reverberate much more through the house. Every time I got up and walked somewhere, it sounded like someone else was walking through the house at the same time.

Just imagine it being daylight. It because of the abuse and trauma-it is still a dark and empty hell

His voice was stuck in my head and then it was crystal clear when I watched the Skinamarink trailer. Furthermore, I own the blu ray of The Exorcist which has a special bonus playlist featuring the banned 1973 trailer, and I think my mind subconsciously connected the three together. The final scene of the movie genuinely made me physically feel chills upon my skin. But it all depends if you have a good attention span, have good imagination, and are able to let yourself get lost in a movie

As a person who has watched (and enjoyed) movies such as Kuso, Rubber, Beyond the Black Rainbow and Lost Highway, that makes me want to watch it even more. I am a huge fan of weird, avant-garde horror that uses atmosphere and tone, so this sounds like my kind of deal. Thanks for the spoiler-free synopsis.

I assume people who like slow burning, elevated horror will enjoy and appreciate it. Whereas people who think “Annabell” and “the conjuring” are scary will not like it.

Movie was cool but should have been a 30 minute (at most) short, demands way too much from the viewer with such a long run time imo. So many good things in it overshadowed by the clear padding to hit feature length and terrible (and painfully loud) jump scares that are so incredibly out of place for a film so clearly devoted to creating an interesting atmosphere

Same here!! I’m not a horror lightweight by any means, as I’ve been watching them consistently since I was like 11. But this movie had me with my blanket up to my eyes by the end, in absolute fear of what was to come next. I will never forget the night I watched this haha it’s not for everybody, but the people who get it it leaves a lasting impression on!

@JayEmVeeKay So I woke up into sleep paralysis, and I could hear someone walking in the other room. I considered maybe it was my mom but quickly it dawned on me I live alone and NOBODY should be in my home. Personally I believe in God so I trusted that nothing could harm me and waited for it to come into my room. I was still frozen sleeping on the floor (hard times) and a black cloaked figure approached me from the door slow and menacingly. It knelt beside me and reached forward just in time for me to break free of sleep paralysis. I bursted up and threw a fist as it dissipated into thin air and I felt relief for a moment. I stood up to close the door since the hallway outside was dark and unsettling and suddenly my tv came on in the other room casting a bright light in the hall. Simultaneously loud distorted "music" started blaring from my tv. Since I live in an apartment I ran into my other room to turn down the volume but as I made the corner it was silent and my tv was on the vizio homescreen. Needless to say I did not sleep again that night especially considering it was within 20 minutes of 3am. It wasn't my worst sleep paralysis experience but the after part was enough to make me extremely uncomfortable in my own home for a few weeks. What happens to you? I'm really curious

It's the definition of a film that is not for everyone, it will either not click with you and you'll turn it off half way through but if it does click with you and you get drawn into it, the horror is very close to home and honestly is absolutely terrifying. People have to make their own minds up about this film.

This is a film that will either be 0 stars for some or 5 stars for others and nobody should dictate others in watching it or loving it. I would recommend everyone who is interested in this film to shut everyone else's opinions off and watch it for themselves and make their own minds up. If they hate it, they hate it and if they like it, they like it. That being said, even if you fall into the "hate it" category, I think it is being disingenuous entirely to state the film is in any way "bad" or "terrible" as some will probably unfortunately jump to considering this is a KZfaq comment section. The film is exceptionally made by all counts, it's just a matter of whether or not you are on board with its experimental direction which demands a lot from the audience and actually demands you to be switched on and paying constant attention to connect every dot or if you aren't on-board and aren't willing to engage with it on the level it expects from you, in which case you'll either be very bored throughout or will have checked out emotionally and switched it off. I also feel you need to be the target audience for a film like this. Only people who actually get what this film is going for from the beginning will click with it and be triggered by the horror it's trying to invoke. It's the kind of horror and feeling that only some people will have in the back of their minds that a film like this could possibly draw out, things that are dormant in childhood, that can be reinterpreted and re-evaluated later on. It preys on that sense of looking back on instances in your childhood where you thought something wasn't right and the further you look back at it with the knowledge you have now, the more the horror of it might come to the forefront and you realise that things you interpreted and couldn't understand as a child were actually worse than you imagined and it haunts you with that fresh perspective. This is the definition of a film that is not for everyone but it not being for everyone doesn't mean in any way, shape or form that it is bad. That is the nature of art and I would urge people go watch it and experience it for themselves before listening to anyone else as and have your own independent take on it.

But there literally were jumpscares though.... And not well crafted ones either. Simply, deafening obnoxious noises to get a cheap jump out of people.

​​@@theshabsThere are 4 jumpscares during the entire film. Half of them work as if taken from House 1977, not that jumpy at all. The 90% remaining is pure tension and atmosphere. The issue really isnt as large as you make it out to be.

There are a few jumpscares though, that telephone damn near scared me off my seat! We do see a monster too......a demon, I believe, towards the end.

Agreed 100%! I get that this is not a film for everyone's tastes, its more along the lines of analog-horror meets Blair-Witch meets horror-art-film. Its definitely unique & I love that. People complain that the shots of a wall or darkened ceiling aren't scary....I disagree. The fact that the camera is showing it means it has significance to the film! Whether that be to make the viewer unsure of when (or if!) the Evil will show itself, & to portray the 'everyday-ness' of a VERY un-everyday situation (we hope! :) ). The film has so many clues to help the viewer 'figure out the plot', at least in our own minds! Every time I watch it I see something new, a good sign. You have to keep your voice down, partially because your parents taught you that nighttime is quiet time, but also because you're scared to speak up lest something in the darkness hear you. Even when you know you're all alone... *you still feel watched*

Would have been scarier if the director had filmed images of his own shit for a week. A total snoozefest by a dude who obviously has no talent for film making or storycrafting. But hey, at least he brought something to the cinema... so there's that, I suppose.

It's not your every day horror film. It does not aim to entertain you - it aims to scare you and confuse you, and it definitely worked with me. Now, yes, the choice not to show any faces of the actors was very strange and (I believe) unnecessary, but it was still scary

@@snozzlehead92 Y, know creativity and storytelling in horror movies isn't always the scripts of Michael Myers or other horror movies, its all about the perspective of how you view this. This movie is not a horror movie, it is terror, very big difference between those two. This film didn't scare me ill say, but it left me with a very long lasting chill after watching it, when you stare at these unmoving, blurry pictures, it just raises then tension if your watching it correctly. I assume when you watched it you were either not alone or not in a dark room, since that's the ideal viewing experience. I would say this is a very creative film, as it is very different from typical "horror films". I think the very sparse use of dialogue is perfect, it just makes things more uneasy, and not seeing any faces of people, makes it even better. Again, this movie is not meant to scare, its meant to make you uneasy, unlike most horror films where they use cheap jumpscares and loud noises, you would be surprised how well silence and unmoving pictures can creep someone out. Personally, this is a great movie, maybe not super scary or high praise people are giving it, but it is a very bold movie to make to deter from the standard horror genre.

Yes but this isn’t a scary movie type of anxiety you should be having. I watched this shit in theaters and there were 3 ear piercing jump scares for absolutely zero reason. If the movie was actually scary and unsettling like it’s supposed to be then why does it need ear piercing audio that could’ve been played over a picture of a puppy and it still would’ve made my heart jump because it was so fucking loud

The camera angles made it look like I was watching footage from security cameras that were moved and pointed away by someone who didn't want to be on camera. The audio was so bad that they had to put subtitles on so people would know what the kids were saying. What the kids said were delivered like when a parent whispers into a 3 years olds ear things to say as a way to amuse their friends with "listen to what my kid says". That's when something was actually being said that wasn't the radio in the background or cartoons. It was happening so little that I actually decided to count the words being said. At 30 mins in, it was averaging 4 words spoken per minute. And most of that was repeating different versions of "Dad? I can't find dad. I don't know where he is". Now, I will fully admit I left halfway through because I knew the movie was boring me so much when I was more interested in watching the lady in front of me fiddling with something in her hand than I was watching the movie. I was also at least the 3rd person to leave. Maybe more that I didn't see leave.

@@GoldFishCracker Its called "In a Dark Place" by Ray Garton. So, its penned as though it were a true story. Its not. But that makes it no less atmospheric. Do be warned though...it deals with some pretty messed up things. And I believe that its quite detailed, if I remember correctly. Its been years since I've read it, but its stayed with me. No other book has unsettled me nearly as much as Dark Place.

I saw people in reviews of movie on KZfaq pissed as hell that this movie “wasn’t scary” cuz the only characters are kids and there isn’t any jumpscares” 💀 Bro that’s literally opposite of a real scary movie, they wanted some cliche ooh scary jumpscare movie and got an actual scary movie and we’re disappointed. It’s a lot scarier being in this atmosphere with an unidentified demon playing around with you like little action figures.

It wasn't a film at all. Film's have a story and characters. This was just a pretentious nearly two hour session of non sequitur shots of ceilings and floors. Since the film maker doesn't respect our time or intelligence, I don't feel compelled to respect his work or say nice things about it.

@@lali6598 two little kids wake up in the middle of the night and can’t find their parents. All the windows are gone from the house and they don’t know what time it is. It’s sort of shot like a fever dream nightmare. Not a traditional horror movie. A lot of it lets you use your imagination. Barely any blood. Just very unsettling sounds and visuals.

@@lali6598 as far as I can tell, the children are sort of stuck in a strange time loop or something. A few jump scares, but mostly just very unsettling dark imagery.

I'd like to think thats almost by design. I got lured in and and almost let down by the first half but there's a specific moment where it jolted me and made it all click. From that moment on I was on edge.

Is it worth going to see this movie? Thinking of taking my husband this weekend to see it…

@@iamshailee I'd say so. Seeing it on a big screen in a quiet theater is awesome. But like what was mentioned above, you kind of need to go in knowing that it's extremely slow and you kind of need to try and vibe on the wavelength that the movie's on. If you can get yourself invested in the mood of the beginning the rest will hella spook you

Saw it last night and after being confused and frustrated by the first half I was bored and wanted to go home for the second half.

@@iamshailee Go in with the right mindset and you'll appreciate it. Very slow, but my family loved it. Have a 12 year old who laughs at horror movies. This one got him. Haha. I swear I'm not a bad parent.

You could almost attribute them taking advantage of you in a meta way with how we're conditioned for stingers in situations like that. I was so tensed up for something to happen and when nothing did all I did was sit there keeping the tension

My fiancée refused to look at it until I told her the credits were rolling. The use of darkness in this film is stellar.

It reminds me of a trailer for an old grindhouse or drive-in movie. Low budget, you don't really know what's going on in the trailer, there's an old man voice actor saying the tagline, you're basically left wondering what the movie is about, thus driving you to the nearest grindhouse or drive-in to see it.
