I found this video and had to watch. It brought back memories of my brother Squirrel, who earned that name by making belt pouches from case skinned squirrels and trading them at rendezvous. He always had something different about each one and was particular about his work. Good to see info for the next generation of woodsman

Rule number one for usable squirrel hides....do NOT shoot with a shot gun. A .22 to the head is an easy shot for one proficient and preserves the entire hide ( and meat) and is good marksmanship practice. I don't know why all the talk of fleas from other posters, but I have found squirrels to be one of the "cleanest" species out there. I have yet to see even a single one with fleas ever. If you have no experience with these things, you are better off not speculating. I have seen exactly _one_ ever with any sign of parasites and it was just under the skin similar to a boil.

Thinking about hunting squirrel one day. Never hunted before. I'm 40 so I figured I should get out there and do it before I get to the point I can't get around. Love your video, exactly how I want to do it when I get a squirrel. I'm a slingshot kinda guy. But that makes it hard.

Love your videos Dave, thanks for sharing your most valuable commodity... Knowledge Its still too early here for squirrels. Plus, we don't have the big reds here in the foothills of SC, just the small grey squirrels and rarely a fox squirrel can be seen.

You're not gonna believe this brother. A few weeks ago during a thunder storm, I found a frightened little dog on my front porch. Usually have no use for ankle biting little yappers, but I fell in love with this one and kept her. Last night, I was sitting out back by the campfire, and this tiny little thing ran down a Cotton Tail, ate the head,, and brought the remainder straight to me. Gotta luv a dog that brings me food.

That red squirrel is a fox squirrel if I'm not mistaken. Here in MN the red squirrels aren't worth taking as they are only slightly larger than a chipmunk. We have a healthy population of Fox squirrels especially around corn and bean fields.

If you cut that squirrel down the gut and spread him out as if to tack him to a board, then de-hair him, the turn that hide into raw hide, you can cut it at about 1/4 of an inch in a spiral pattern to make a bow string. I saw that on another bushcraft video, though I can't remember who it was or I would honor him and send you his way for a view. Darn it, I will have to try to find out now. Good stuff dave

He has a few vids on it, and the process is pretty much the same for all 4 legged mammals. The brain of the animal is exactly enough to tan its own hide when dissolved in warm water until its milky. Dave has at least 6-8 vids on the subject using 3-4 different animals. For a good start do a search for "Utilizing Resources" on Dave's channel. maybe Dave can get all of them put into their own skinning and tanning playlist, but they are still easy enough to find.
