Skirrid Fawr Walk & Climb Part 1
Best viewed in 720pHD or 1080pHD
Join us for a walk and climb up to the summit of Skirrid Fawr near Abergavenny, Monmouthshire an elevation of 486 m (1,594 ft).
Ysgyryd Fawr (English: Skirrid) is an easterly outlier of the Black Mountains in Wales, and forms the easternmost part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The mountain is often referred to locally as just The Skirrid. The smaller hill of Ysgyryd Fach or 'Little Skirrid' (270m) lies about 4.5 km / 2.5 mi to the south.
The distinctive shape of this Old Red Sandstone hill comprises a long ridge oriented nearly north-south, with a jagged western side resulting from ice agelandslips . The upper slopes of the hill are composed of Devonian age sandstones assigned to the Senni Formation (formerly known as the 'Senni Beds'). These overlie weaker mudstones of the St Maughans Formation - a situation which has contributed to the instability of the hill's steep flanks, resulting in a very large landslip at the northern end of the mountain, although the British Geological Survey map of the area (Abergavenny sheet) shows the landslide extending along the whole of the west side of the mountain. There are numerous other landslips of a similar nature on the nearby hills, although that on the Skirrid is perhaps the most well known owing to its visibility from several directions. There are also numerous rock tables on the hill, some of which were formed by the landslide, and have attracted names such as the "Devil's table". The ridge is very similar in its rocky edge to that found on the Black Hill to the north in Herefordshire.

An enjoyable outing, Paul. Glad you were able to get out there. :-) Skirrid Fawr's been on my list for a while... But with the existing bridge toll, pay and display parking and the challenge of plotting a reasonable circular walk, I've yet to tick it off. I spotted the backpack straight away! :-D Wasn't sure if the second change was a hair or beard trim but it seems as thought it was the hat.

Thank you Olly. The Skirrid is well worth a visit despite the toll and parking charges. You spotted the differences in Nick's attire namely the change of rucksack and hat lol. Well spotted and to be honest the beard may have been different but I didn't notice lol :)

Under that sky and coming up those hills at the summit of Skirrid Fawr i expected to see Donald Sutherland and Kate Bush appear.Wonder if it was filmed around that way as it looks a very similar landscape,or am i getting my Kate Bush videos mixed up.Great hike again Paul. Re Nick's different appearance - New Berghaus backpack and beard,possibly...

Thank you Andy as always for your kind words and encouragement. Very much appreciated. I have not been able to find any references to the Skirrid and Kate Bush but I agree the landscape is uncannily similar or was it the Marlborough Downs, Wiltshire another magical place? Yes Andy, Nick was sporting a different rucksack, a Berghaus that he is testing plus a new waterproof cap purchase. You may also be correct regard the beard as I have to be honest and say that I didn't notice lol. I hope that you are well. I will be giving you a shoutout in the next one. Paul :)

Lovely walk Paul, watching this awakened a memory for me, many years ago when the kids were young on our way to Snowdonia for a camping holiday they kept talking about the wizards hat. We were not part of the conversation so didn't take much notice, but on our way back down the following week i realized they were talking about the Sugar Loaf, we talked about exploring the area one day but to my shame we never did. Another grand tour of the area Paul really well filmed, a perfect guide to follow when i do get my act together and explore this wonderful part of the country. Cheers mate and ATB.

Jim Holden Thank you Jim for your kind words as always. Much appreciated. Yes, the wizards hat. I have heard the Sugar Loaf called that before and it is a perfect description as the Loaf is so very distinctive and we have viewed it now from the North, East and West and it is in our sights for a climb soon. These peaks really are addictive aren't they lol? I think that I am slowly driving Nick mad with my incessant chatter lol :)

Nick wont go wrong with his Berghaus pack, one of mine is 30 years old the other 15 and as good as new, Good invigorating climb that, one to get the heart pumping. £4 for parking is a rip off, NT is taking the proverbial with their prices.

rhialobran Thank you Simon. The Berghaus rucksack is great but may be a little short on capacity particularly when we wild camp and carry a bit more kit but for a day carry it is superb at 38 litres. It was a bit tongue in cheek regarding the £4 parking charge as we got caught out with not having enough change between us. It is strange that Llanthony Priory is free to park, visit the ruins and use the toilet facilities yet other sites nearby charge. That said, the experience was priceless :)

It was a while since I was there, I went with a small group while we were visiting a farm group. For some reason we decided to go up the steep part which was hell but well worth it for the view. Plan to go again.

Yet another awesome vid stunning views What maps do you use while out walking mate? Oh and nick has a new very clean backpack and a waterproof cap👍🏻 Can’t beat the bobble hat though 😄what’s my prize?💥🎁 Keep up the good work mate

Thank you Shaun as always for watching and for your kind words. It means a lot mate. The maps are the Ordnance Survey OL 1:25 000 series which we carry but you can also get them with the View Ranger app if you sign up to the membership although it is a bit fiddly using the app on the move so we prefer the paper versions :) You are spot on regarding Nick's rucksack and hat....well spotted....prize is a compulsory life time subscription to this channel, sorry lol.
