In this video I show you how I removed and refit the battery box to check the power steering fluid level on a Skoda Fabia MK1 1.9 PD TDI(00-07) which is similar to other VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda models
Gedore mechanics tool set amzn.to/3zR45Ma
Power Steering Fluid: Pentosin chf 11s PA 6.6 G002 000
Note: This car is filled with RED equivalent fluid and not Pentosin chf 11s which is GREEN marked on the cap. If your car has green fluid - use green fluid

Hello friend, I am writing to you because thanks to your very detailed videos I have been able to solve and repair various breakdowns in my Skoda Fabia; In this case it is the electric transmission pump, a new component for me since previously I only knew about hydraulic transmission pumps installed directly to the combustion engine system. In this particular case I always drove the Skoda car with the problem of the electric power steering, that is, the power steering never worked correctly since I bought the car. I always drove it with the steering a little stiff, but since it was my first car with that type of system The steering seemed normal to me, it was not until I drove another Mercedes Benz car at my job that I was able to compare the operation and realize that something was not working very well in my car, that is, it worked but a little stiff if I compared it to the car. my business. So I decided to look for information on the Internet; Well, not the Internet itself, but where the largest encyclopedia of technical information on the Internet is located. KZfaq. 😁 As I am a subscriber to your channel, your mega useful video and information on the disassembly and subsequent checking of the hydraulic fluid of the electric transmission pump appeared. I did all the disassembly according to your instructions, although my native language is Spanish, I understand English technical language a little, and this video had subtitles in Spanish. I am in Germany 🇩🇪 and car repairs are expensive and require some waiting time to enter a workshop sometimes months. After disassembling the elements to reach the cover of the electric transmission pump, I found that said pump is below the minimum transmission oil level. Previously I thought it was a communication problem between the car's computer and the sensors and the electric pump, but the fundamental problem is lack of transmission oil. I thank you for your useful and instructive videos on repair and disassembly of a Skoda Fabia car.

power steering reservoir under the battery and intake. great design Skoda, lol Also, I don't think you remember but almost a year ago I thanked you for your videos. And so far with your videos, i have done these on my Fabia: 1. cleaned the blower motor 2. replaced the horn, had to take off the front bumper 3. replaced headlights with LEDs 4. changed the air vents inside 5. cleaned the cabin air filter 6. repaired the rear windshield washer, which had a disconnected cable and i still have more to do (get a new oxygen sensor and fix rattling exhaust and leaks... maybe you can do a guide on that?) anyway thanks again, i managed to give this car a second chance!!

I am glad that I have direct access to the steering fluid pump in my Skoda Fabia because I have to fill the tank like once a few months so four or five times a year. Mechanic said it would be really expensive just to buy a new pump and this solution with the filling the tank once a few month is much cheaper but not the most comfortable solution.

Really good video but i have one question ⁉️ when the fluid is dark does the wheel turn left right more harder or just the pump make noise
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 жыл бұрын
Big Thanks. At some stage the pump begins to fail, one indicator can be the colour of the fluid as the particles reduce the lubrication efficiency and the pump struggles to provide pressure in the same manner and so may cause whinning noises and delayed force, slowness or stiffness. It may still work perfectly with darker fluid, but it will only be a waiting game until it would eventually show signs of failure. it all happens slowly, but can be costly if you ignore early signs :-)

Love the videos. I have a problem. Inherited my grandads 1.9tdi estate, same colour as yours. Only 25,000 miles, but the steering light comes on. When driving occasionally when slowing down the steering becomes heavy, also when you go round a bend in the road and your holding the steering and it’s working normally it sometimes for a split second seems to go really light. Not sure if is related or not, but I’ve noticed at night the headlights are slightly flickering as is the dash instruments. Any advice/suggestions would be great. I had the Sdi estate before, which also was a hell of a work horse, engine was still going strong at 250,000 miles, and it was super economical. I’ve learned a lot from your great videos. Thank you.

Thank you. Have you checked the fluid level? Any visible leaks from the rack and pump? If OK then it does sound like it could be a simple electrical problem (damp weather exacerbates electrical issues in these) like the battery failing, body earthing, fuse or connections/earthing by the pump. It could be the steering angle sensors going bad and even a failing pump, but highly unlikely with the mileage so low. After doing the basic checks and still no joy then I would get it hooked up to OBD2 diagnostics to highlight any issue; then you may or may not be able to do a simple fix or find a more expensive complicated one. It can help if the car is actually having the fault at the time of test.

Thank you.....I have not noticed any leaks at all or checked the fluid. I’m trying to figure where to start. Not sure if it’s linked to the head lights and dash flickering. Thanks, glad you like them. Basically yes, but run the car for a while between empty/refills with lots of lock to lock if you have time. There is no way of draining the fluid entirely, so you are just using the pump to mix the rack fluid through the pump with the reservoir fluid.

@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 8 ай бұрын
Could be, have you checked the fill level and filled it up like in the video? If the intermitancy continues you may have a probelm as this is how they start to fail. Check for leaks as issues around the end seals leak into the rack boots. Make sure there is power getting to the unit and your battery is strong, cold weather shows up if your battery is failing. Also check the earthing. Fingers crossed it doesn't re-occur or you find something easily fixable. Oh and there is the PAS sensor also to change if need be :-)

How would you clean the intake valves from carbon?
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 жыл бұрын
you can do a good job just cleaning the intake EGR. then with the manifold off to clean it you can access the back of the valves, but care is needed to clean these in the closed position. There are various products used for cleaning the valves inside the cylinder with the engine running including just pure water which are really the easiest thing to do first, but care is needed with this, it's best not to be a bull in a china shop! The only sure fire way of cleaning the valve heads would be to take the head off which is a bit more involved with all the timing gear, new gasket and bolts etc :-)

@@HatBoyHarvey ah okay I only asked this because I suspect that my car is having too much build up affecting it either in the intake valves themselves or just a clogged up or broken egr valve as just the other day I cleaned the throttle body with a spray cleaner but to no success the condition stayed the same. Currently it can start at a healthy 1000rpm but slowly after a minute or so rough idle and shake at 700rpm especially worse when trying to take off in first gear having experienced it reach 500rpm and the lights dimmer at the point of it almost stalling. what would you think the problem may be? it's a 1.2 engine with 54,000 milage.

I'm afraid so, but don't panic all you need is a battery saver. Before you take the old battery out connect another 12v battery (doesn't need to be a car bat) to the terminals securely (screwed/bolted on if pos) and then exchange the car battery for the new one, connect up/bolt up, before taking the temporary one off. That will keep the radio code untouched and working, but you can't slip up with the change over, so take your time. Hope this helps :-)

Hi Harvey, just one question. Are you sure you're using the correct fluid? According with specifications it must be green. And I can confirm that original fluid is green. In fact, in the top of the reservoir cap you can read PENTOSIN CHF 202/11S (at least in 1.9 TDi). Maybe in yours (1.9 SDI) it's different. For 1.9 TDi the specifications are G 002 000 and/or G 004 000. For example I use this one: Liqui Moly 1127 Best regards

For example there are 2 brands of steering fluid pumps. One is TRW and the other one is KOYO. My Fabia Combi 6Y5 (1.9 TDi) uses KOYO. Both use green fluid. And the reservoir cap are different. OEM compatible power steering (hydraulic) oils are green. The red/pink color is usually ATF. Which is often listed as being compatible as power steering fluid on a fabia. Which i suppose is true. (its both hydraulic oil and the viscosity is similar) i never tried it myself. I just spend a few extra bucks on the OEM stuff because... steering racks are expensive. But i've had to put it into toyota's for example as the transmission and power steering pumps share the same reservoir and it needs ATF

How to open rear mk1 door with broken bracken!
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 жыл бұрын
Have you tried looking at the wires/connections going into the door behind the rubber bellows? activate the key whilst waggling the connections or spot obvious wire breaks. once open check out the door lock microswitch/replace.

I think about that, but I can't open the door, to look for wires. I don't know how to open the door.
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 жыл бұрын
I understand. It may be that the little handle wire attached to the lock is too tight. This can cause the door not to open also. The cable has a plastic node on the end of the cable. You can see it if you pull the handle out, look at the crack. The idea would be to move the plastic node further in towards the car so the wire isn't as tight, but still attached. This maybe the cause, but I'm not sure if it is possible or not with the barrel still attached. you don't want to release the node completely inside or it may never come out again.

This is almost identical to the procedure of topping up the EPS fluid on my Seat Ibiza minus one or two parts to have to remove. Either way it is a terrible location and design. Something that should take 5 mins to do now takes 30/40 mins.

I agree, on this model in particular you have to remove too much just to check it !

Actually you use wrong fluid at video. VAG power steering fluid is green. You ruin steering rack gaskets with red fluid.
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it is unlikely that it will ruin anything, it is more about the viscosity and temperature tolerance over time compared to the original. You are quite right to point this out for others to use the correct green stuff, thanks :-)
