Best car review I've seen! Love the fact that they drove it for 6months before reviewing! Like others, I disagree about the looks. I think it's one of the best looking estates around. The others all look the same these days. The Octavia is my favourite after Volvos.

had my 4wheel drive 2litre diesel scout for 7years and 6 months now.Apart from servicing I have just had a new batttery.fitted at56,000miles and that is all.I no longer have a great use for an estate but have no intention of changing it.It is a fast economical car.Only whinge?the alloy wheels ,or 2of them, have surface corrosion which need restoring.I don’t know what other type of wheel to use if indeed there is such a thing

Me too, I neither agree with the dislikes, actually there's nothing I dislike about Sköda Octavia Estate, it's simply amazing, of course isn't very fun to drive, but if you want have fun in an Estate car, buy the BMW M5 Touring, but get ready to pay a lot of fuel, and this one is very cheap to buy and run, and very practical space inside, so definelly the best car for the value

@@noelevans8239 I use steel wheels on my Mk 1 VRS estate ( like the spare ones) as they are stronger and less prone to distort if you meet a pot-hole, and the battery in that car was 11 years old when i replaced it. I think the later model cars look a bit chubby compared to the mark one but hey, it's a car not a wife so you can easily exchange it !

I agree with the presenters comments about the looks of the latest cars. Skoda is trying to attract younger customers with a meaner, edgier design, which for me is not appealing at all - but then I’m over 50. I much prefer the mk 2 looks, without the pointless sharp creases in the panels. I think the mk 2 chrome grille is more pleasing to the eye too, giving the car greater presence in my opinion. I’ve just purchased a 2012 Skoda estate plus, a very handsome car.

I bought a 15 year old 2007 Mk2 estate 2.0 tdi Elegance, 6 speed manual, 160K on the clock. Its a great car, really nice to drive, and I keep the fuel consumption in check by not having a lead foot (except for fun or necessity). I think the body looks nice, but I dont really care that much anyway. Who cares if it is boring. The stereo is adequate and the bells and whistles are a novel change. I like to buy good, used, cheap, low mileage cars that have been looked after, and I save a squillion in cash. Never had a problem yet.

I have been driving a 2.0 tdi for about three years now. The engine is by far the best ingredient here, the power is great especially given the low weight of the car. More than 150 bhp without 4 wheel drive is absolute overkill because traction is lost quite easily in damp conditions even with the wider tires. I prefer this engine over the 1.6 diesel which doesn't come with a 6 speed manual gearbox and has too much torque and power concentrated on a too small rev range. The 2.0 diesel can accelerate easily in 6th gear, fully loaded from 1400 rpm onwards. Flip to 4th at those revs and it will beat an audi A6 2.7 tdi in the acceleration to 130 km/h (and beyond). The Columbus infotainment system is good as well. Nevertheless, there are problems with this car: the stereo sounds crap (even with the Canton upgrade, with the sub switched on at average levels there is a certain lower frequency that gets bumped which results in bass only when playing the wrong tracks. Result = sub is permanently switched off), there is an annoying rattle coming from the two front radiator vents when the car is cold which apparently cannot be solved, there are too many hard plastics around, the leather feels plasticky and the DAB antenna seems to have an issue when it's raining. I have ordered my next car which will be a mercedes e class estate. We will keep the skoda as the second car. It will certainly do the job for most people but if you are critical and have driven a premium car before you will notice the quality difference. To cut a long story short: never buy a premium car and enjoy your Skoda (but get a better after market stereo) ;) !

I have the 1.6 DSG Black Edition estate in white and I wish I had gone for the 2.0. It feels under powered when accelerating at higher speeds and I average about 50mpg on a 15 mile commute to work. A 270 mile drive to Wales I can average 56-60mpg depending on traffic. I can't help but feel the mpg is affected by the fact you have to floor it to get up to speed without holding everyone up. I've never managed more than 500 miles from a full tank but I think this is because the car encourages you to refuel half way between 1/4 and empty. It could probably do 600 at most if you ignored the shouting. The Black Edition has black alloys and tinted windows so it looks less like a taxi and more like the vRS from the outside (minus the painted calipers, LED lights, badge, fog lights, exhaust pipes...) The boot is incredible! I've managed to fit two weeks worth of clothes, Xmas presents and a pushchair at ease in the back without removing the parcel shelf. I'll be testing a vRS when it is time to hand this back.

Just about to buy another one of these. I had a skoda Octavia green line before and as a taxi it was bombproof. The one I'm about to get is the 1.6 version of the car you just reviewed in quartz grey. Why did you suggest the Manual over the DSG?
@AutoTraderTV
@AutoTraderTV 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond, We suggest the manual because the it is perfectly adequate for the majority of drivers, so for most, spending the extra on the twin-clutch is a needless expense. Also, while the DSG is cracking on other VW Group models, it can be a little jerky and uncouth on the Octavia, especially when paired with the 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine.
@raymondswan4900
@raymondswan4900 7 жыл бұрын
Auto Trader hi thanks for the reply. I've already ordered the car yet I think my concern is the DSG reliability problems they've had in the past. Do you know if these have been ironed out now? I average around 50,000 a year so although the manual I previously used was totally fine, I wonder if the DSG will hold up.
@SquareoftheyearFM
@SquareoftheyearFM 7 жыл бұрын
The 7-speed (dry clutch) DSG has had reliability issues, the 6-Speed (wet clutch) one is far superior. Our Octavia vRS has the 6-Speed and it's been faultless if a little jerky at times.

Had my VRS Diesel for approaching 5 years and 50,000 miles now, probably had more issues than any other car. Within the 3 years warranty the usual sensor issues and faulty headlights plus a sticking drivers door. Out of warranty the water pump and infotainment systems failed, cost to repair over £2,000!!! Dashboard loose around the light switch and the switch has now decided to retreat back into the depths of the dash, which is poor as I think I have only used it about 10 times as its left on auto. One final annoying issue is tyre wear, the fronts scrub on the inside which isn't unusual for a big diesel, but the rears scrubbing on the inside and making vibrating noises as they wear oddly is really annoying and gets tiresome on the motorway.

Don't worry about reliability...our first Octavia 1.9TDI did over 280.000Km and never ever failed us, we had to sell it because of new emission rules. The Fabia we had almost 200.000Km, 13years old, OK... the window regulator failed because it was used 4 times a day also in winter...apart from that, nothing ever went wrong. The new Octavia 1.8TSI we have is now two years old, only had the major 30.000Km service interval (€128 incl. tax, oil, filters and labour)...100% happy. I hear this whole the time...Japanese never fail, they do fail like everything made by man, and when they do it wil break the bank, not your Skoda. Horror stories everywhere while Reaching before buy new Octavia VRS 2017. Now I am confused. Most forums discussion are about failed DSG, Megatronics , and so on. Cheating Skoda dealers who swapped original parts for duplicate. OMG.. Horror stories continues

Maybe it has more boot space than all those rivals in the list - but it still has less boot space than Peugeot 308 SW.

My Skoda Octavia TSI ( Petrol) is still plodding on after over 6 years now . My impression?Very Economical,Reliable, Cheap,Badly built, Nasty , Functional with Awful Dealers ( I have a great back street garage that are way better than the Local ( Wakefield) Dealers that supplied mine. )My skoda replaced a 13 year old Volvo V40 that was in perfect condition even after owning it for so long. My next car WONT be a Skoda!!

I stopped watching when you complained about the Skoda badge. That's their symbol. If you don't like it, buy what you do. That shows you are a snob. Get yourself some Arian car.

as a person whos had a 2012 c class estate, and has since had a 2014 superb l&k estate and currently a 2016 vrs estate, the skodas were far superior in every way.
