the second race of nascar's tumultuous, transitional 2000 season. after reigning champ dj torched the competition at daytona, rockingham would give a more telling preview of the racing to come, paced by '99 breakout stars bobby labonte and tony stewart and the resurgent dale earnhardt. all completely live and in color.

An Underrated Rock Race usually it seemed like The Fall race was more competitive back in the day but this one could've ended up differently - Ward dominated a part of it even Dale was making a late charge but ran out of laps

I wish they would go back here for Cup and Nationwide. such an amazing race track. NASCAR never sells out at any tracks anymore so they should just go back to good tracks

DNQ: 50 Ricky Craven, 32 Scott Pruett*, 93 Dave Blaney*, & 14 Mike Bliss*. Watching the early laps of this race, I miss Bobby Hamilton. Can you believe it's been 5 years since neck cancer took his life? Very underrated as a Winston Cup driver.

TNN did an excellent job with this race, Eli Gold went through literally everyone on the track, and what a race, its a shame this racetrack is in the middle of nowhere, causing the attendance to sag.

Idk who dreamed up the idea that this track didn't sell seats or put on a good race. Up til the last race there in 04 the races and finishes were great and I remember crowds being fine.

Actually I remember the 04 race being pack, the only race that I remember that had crappy attendance (by 2002 standards, these days that crowd would be impressive) was the Fall 02 race

+viacomsux45 I think that may have been bad weather that day because Mark Martin and Johny Benson put on a good show at the end.

@09corvettezr1 The track isnt in the middle of nowhere, its in the reigon that watches NASCAR most, thats why theyre bringing trucks back, it was never a matter of attendance NASCAR wanted to expand out of the Carolinas

I miss racing like this, and I miss Rockingham. I hate what they did to this sport. I only started following it in 1999 because of Tony Stewart, and by 2006 I had had enough of it. I tried to watch it before 1999 but really couldn't find anyone to root for. I hated Jeff Gordon at that time, and everyone loved Dale Sr. so I didn't want to root for him. Tony was a rookie in 1999 and I loved his take no shit attitude. I don't know about years previous to 1999, but it seemed crowds, and popularity were at their peak from 1999-2003. I HATE the way they changed the points system. So stupid. Just because Kenseth only won 1 race in 2003 and won the championship NASCAR decided to change their points, and championship scheme. The whole point in this sport was that CONSISTENCY was rewarded. Now, Just because you win a race, you're eligible for the championship? LOL! That's so fucking laughable! So you can win 1 race, have 15 DNF's and be 30th in points, but you can still win a championship because the points start over at race 27? Come on! BRING BACK THE OLD POINTS SYSTEM! AND BRING BACK ROCKINGHAM! Also seems like I liked a lot more drivers back when I watched it compared to now. So happy I can watch these old races again!

+GialloHorror You're stuck in the past. Most sports have a similar playoff system to NASCAR's Chase system that has now been around for over a decade.

dchamp9396 The thing that made NASCAR appealing was that it was DIFFERENT from every other sport. If you think I'm "stuck in the past" then I'm obviously not the only one. All you have to do is look at the crowds back in 2000-2004, and look at them now.

Championships are supposed to be won at THE END of the season not with 2-3 races left in the year. The controversy of the old points system in Winston Cup era shows that sports even auto sports should NEVER EVER work that way. Here's what it was in 2003 the Truck championship is being decided at the end with six drivers in the running while Matt Kenseth clinched the "Winston" Cup with 3 or 4 races left in the year making those last 3 to 4 races pointless saying "if a championship was clinched with 3 to 4 races left, WHY are we still running the season?"

If it wasn't for Jeff Gordon, Jarrett could have, and should have won the championship in 96, 97, 98 and even 2000. And if he had not have broken his ribs in 2001, he could have made a serious run for it. Even in 2002, when he got off to such a terrible start to the year, he finished so strong. He had always been very consistent in his prime

Its kind of interesting that all of Bobby Labonte's 2000 wins(including championship) are uploaded on KZfaq. He only won like 4 races all year(Rock, Charlotte, Darlington, Indy)
