Are you wondering whether you should stay in Skukuza rest camp in the Kruger National Park? In this video I share my thoughts on this large, busy camp situated in the far south of the park.
Skukuza is the headquarters of the park and thus it feels more like a town that it does a rest camp. Unfortunately it can become extremely busy and noisy, especially during the school holidays and even over weekends when loads of day visitors flood here.
Personally, the camp is way too cramped for me! Not only are there too many tightly-spaced rondawels and chalets, but the campsite stands are also took small and close to each other. If I had to book one accommodation type, it would be the riverside bungalows that overlook the Sabie River.
Speaking of which - the view over the river is probably my favourite thing about Skukuza. I do like having a bite and a drink on the deck overlooking the Sabie River, while searching for hippos in the water below and green pigeons in the sycamore fig trees above. In fact, Skukuza is one of the best camps for bird watching in the entire park! A stroll through camp can is usually rewarded with sightings of white-browed robin-chats, purple-crested turacos and much more!
Other camp facilities in Skukuza include two hotels (including one on the old railway that crossed the river), a conference centre, a library and museum, a filling station, a massive shop, multiple restaurants and a fast food area, two swimming pools and a spa and even a bank and a post office.

Hey there, thank you for bringing Kruger into my home in Germany. Love your videos. Stayed in Kruger (with homebase Skukuza Research camp) for many months and come back twice a year. I am glad you included the nursery, which basically no one knows about. But there are some few things I would like to add: - good (relatively new) restaurant Shelati (train) - the poolside next to the spa is nicer then the one you showed in the video and jeez!: the wellness in the spa is amazing (i never thought I would use it, as i come to KNP for nature... but its really worth it!) - Lake Panic bird hide is close by and a must do in the early morning (- good doctors if needed) - lunchtime is way to hectic as all the day visitors with the open safari vehicles enter the place, time to avoid the shop / cattle baron restaurant area :)...

As a first time camper in Kruger I agree with the disappointing camp sites. It was such a disappointment when we stayed at Skukuza Campsite in December 2019. It was a free for all. People put up tents and caravans just where they could find an open space. When we arrived we had a hard time to even find a spot. The braaier was broken. People were loud. We Camped at Crocodile Bridge camp site for a few days prior to Skukuza, it was such a pleasant experience.

Thanks for sharing with us.....yes the camping area is not comfortable at all. But we love to stop at Skukuza for breakfast as well as lunch. The gholf club is the one area that we did not visit yet. Will make a stop there with our next visit to Kruger. The bird life is great in Skukuza and around the camp. Thanks for your great video

Very good video. Not silly music but rather bird calls. Good balanced info. Great pictures. Yes the park is over developed, what a pity. But still my favourite place on earth

I read the story and saw the video about the lion cub who could not keep up with it's mother possibly due to a snake bite. Dennis Gold was a guide that saw this and it occurred near Shukuza Camp in Kruger National Park. My question is - why didn't Dennis Gold let someone know and have someone come along and anesthetize Mom and give the cub anti-venom? Instead of wondering if the cub will survive? They were not in a reserve? They ARE endangered species, right? Part of the reason they ARE endangered is because there are too many us (humans) and they are rapidly being squeezed out. It is too bad about the Shukuza being so crowded but not very surprising.

How is the noise intrusion, compared to the tent sites, if you're staying in the cottages?

Hi, thank you. This is so helpful! Do you think that the game viewing at Sabi Sabi and Skukuza is too similar? We are hoping to visit 2 areas to maximise our chances of catching big 5 and more.

It will be a completely different experience, even though it’s so close together. With one being public and one being private, it’s like apples and oranges 🙂

No, there are others, but it’s not particularly reliable. Most camps have cellphone signal, however.
