In this video I show you how to replace the op-amps in a Aiyima A70 and I then give a detailed before and after subjective review. I also weigh in on the finished upgraded combo and:
Does this amp now pass into the realm of HiFi or does it still miss the mark! Does it compete against higher priced tube based HiFi gear? Watch the video to find out!

Looking forward to your Sparkos interview. 💜 This will be a unique, fresh conversation compared with the plethora of “me too” content churning out there. My guess is the op amps in this application generally serve in the role of voltage gain stage and input impedance matching. These little Class D amps have their place, but I am still living in the old days of hot running inefficient Class A biased amps for their sonic characteristics, especially in the midrange.

Yep. Those Staccato op amps are pretty special and Jacob very helpful. I use them in my Kinki EX 1 amp. As for the little chip amps, I had Burson V6 op amps laying around and put them in a Fosi V3. A definite improvement in overall smoothness, and got rid of that Class D glare. Had I not had the Burson around I would not have spent the cash, however. Also I had to cut holes in the casing to fit them in. Looks pretty cool, though.

I'm lucky enough, and old enough to buy moderately expensive gear, but still like to play with the budget stuff.

Nice to see that the Sparkos op-amps gets the Skunkie seal of approval. I know Randy at Cheap Audio Man gives these a high rating as well, particularly for use in the Fios amps and the Geshelli DACs. Nice walkthrough as well. Despite knowing what to do already, I just found it entertaining to following along, as you describe things so well. As for the Dragon DAC, you might want to try the SMSL SU-1 DAC. That was another device highly touted by Randy. It is a very good entry level DAC at about $80. I had bought one and while it does make a noticeable improvement over my computer (USB) connection, I mainly bought it to get some magic out of an older commercial Pioneer DVD player that I use as a CD player. The funny thing is that the DVD player actually has a superior DAC built in when compared to the SU-1! I wasn't expecting that! So I have to go with something a bit more for that application, such as the Geshelli DACs

7:46 I think using sockets for op-amps is a good thing. I don't know about the 3602, but in general, op-amps have a standard "pin out." There may be minor differences, like one may require an external compensation cap, while others don't, but accommodating that difference is easy. With the standardized connections, you can experiment with different amps, or replace and older one with an improved version. This is a common practice with older, cheap gear, that often employed 741 op-amps (0.7 V/uS !!!), that could be upgraded with high slew-rate op-amps.

Discrete op amps like the SS3602, the even better SS2590, and Burson V7 series all run in class A operation with increased current capacity and can upgrade the sound of many audio component, particularly sensitive devices like DACs. Initially a doubter, I am definitely a believer having rolled all of these. As to which to consider for a particular device depends upon what one desires in system synergy, but the SS3602 is a good all-arounder in a compact package.

@@georgebliss964 No, I've already traveled that road with help, going back and forth many times with a DAC makes swaps fast and easy. Having narrowed the field to two personal favorites (Sparkos SS2590 and Burson V7V), I can reliably differentiate these in a blind swap in a matter of seconds with familiar material. The difference in soundstage alone is not subtle, and this was a revelation. The original Ti OPA1656 IC sounds dull and flat in comparison to either. I often saw car-amps & Class D amps quoting a wattage at 10% T.H.D. & many that give no distortion parameters whatsoever. I was very surprised how loud a proven 2, 5 & then 10 watts sounded via averagely efficient (89'db / 1'watt @ 1 metre) 8'Ohm speakers in a hi-fi shop's listening room once (with well damped walls & surfaces). In the mid 60's(?) to the 1980's, U.K. & imported amps kept to a German (I think?) "Specifications Code" folk called the "DIN 5000 spec's" where wattage was always given a 0.1% THD. Dont know if valve smps were spec'd at "DIN 5000 figures, but the 0.1% limit was often relaxed to 1% for valve amps under review in pre-net hi-fi mags. I cant imagine how 10% distortion in class D would compare to a valve amp's even-order of harmonic distortion, horrendous (verses a bit too grainey??) In those days, the influx of top-brand Japanese, U.K. & European solid state amps filled UK hi-fi mag's pages & It seemed like a "Specification War" where i recall my father & his friends agreeing, like many did "power amps make no difference to the sound if the specifications are the same" Wattage is still a missleading marketing tool, when 10% Total distortion is stated, as if it's fine

Yes of course adding discrete opamps would improve the sound of any IC opamps. I’ve done it with Sparkos to a number of SMSL gear. However you will need an expert level of soldering skills and gear as you will need to solder out the IC opamps, and solder some DIP8 adapters to receive new socketed opamps. Not all audio gear has sockets to switch out opamps as easily. SMSL is a company that doesn’t put socketed opamps in their gear. I’ve put Sparkos into SMSL AO200MKII amp and AO300 DAC/AMP unit, you’ll need a hot air soldering gun/station. Good luck! 😅

I can't imagine it would be that hard to have a high pass, with a defeat switch for when a sub isn't used. The low pass honestly is useless as every powered sub on the planet already has an adjustable low pass filter.
@nancy4don
@nancy4don Ай бұрын
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Right. I was just thinking that you couldn’t send a high-pass into the amp then use its sub out. Bass would have been cut. Maybe a Y-adapter with high-pass into the amp, no filter to sub?
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Ай бұрын
They could internally insert the high pass after the volume control, they have to be doing this with the current sub out's low pass filter. If you use a Y adapter, the volume control on the unit is no longer usable, you'd have to use it as a power amp and control the volume externally.

Very good specs on these. Even better than LM833's! I was expecting you to say there was no change at all to the sound, so this is surprising. What were the numbers on the original opamp chips? TLO71? LF353? LM741? I'd be eally interested to know! Still, at $40 to $80 EACH, compared to $4 each for a pretty good LM833 chip. Plus there may not be room on your circuit board for these. I'd rather just get the parts & build them myself to try & save some cash. Good job though Mr. Sparko!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there are likely only a handful of DIYers who would be able to actually work with components this tiny and the op amp actually work when they were done with it. @@SkunkieDesignsElectronics I asked what the part numbers were on the original opamp chips that you removed from the amp. I would be very curious to know. I wonder how LM833 chips would sound in place of the original opamp chips? But I don't know what type the original opamps are yet until you tell me. Sorry if I didn't explain myself well. But it would be a $12 experiment to try three LM833 chips first, before spending $240 instead on these expensive sparko opamp replacement modules. To make such a huge difference to the sound, great though the specs on the sparko's seem to be, the original opamps can't be very good. Forget I mentioned building the sparko modules yourself from a kit of sparko-supplied parts, if they were available. I'll just say that I... have found an easy way to properly solder surface mount components, like those used on the sparko modules, onto circuit boards. I can describe the process I use, if you want. If we refuse to learn how to work with smc's, the hobby will eventually end, with smc's usage increasing. Don't be scared of them! I can show you!

For some time I was also testing various little class D amps. They are OK for the kitchen or so but even for my desk I would not use them. You don’t have to have 5000$ speakers to hear that. Every half decent 20 year old class AB amp will sound better than these. And if you buy them used they are not even more expensive.

What is the power rating of the class D mini amp power bricks? A quick look at that spec will tell us the potential power output that may be possible....I see some of these kind of amps with tiny power jacks and small power bricks with claims of hundreds of watts....
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Ай бұрын
It comes with a brick claiming 48V at 5A. Max power vs usable power that sounds good can be two different things. The fact that they give the frequency response rating at 5W tells me a lot. I'm using 3-4W and it sounds nice. At 20W it might not!
@whome8192
@whome8192 Ай бұрын
The chip manufacturers claim up around 300 watts at 10%THD. The manufacturers of the amps copy these over optimistic specs. 90 to 150 watts of clean power is possible with these amps from single tone tests. Multi-tone tests will show power supply weaknesses in any amp, this is where expensive amps will beat this amp, and small tube amps beat many amps at low volumes. Driving low impedance loads with these amps and the remote power brick is where they will be most challenged. The capability is there but the low price point and remote power bricks will limit these amps. Take that away, and plenty of mainstream amps, if not 75 to 95% of new amps are like this, but with local power supplies, but they cost thousands.
