My first year doing bees my wife and I bought two complete langstroth hives and got our nucs. The bees almost made it through winter. Lost one during an early warm spike that turned cold fast, and then during the next was then cold we lost the other. So, I built two langstroth long hives and both hives made it through the next winter, but during the early spring one absconded. Now going into this winter we have three hives and two are in the langstroth longs. I've learned a ton from you, leo, and a couple others. The local beekeepers near me all do only the traditional hive and we are experimenting and learning. It's expensive, and much of what you and leo say I've learned the hard way and in other areas I do what you two say and it works. For spring of 2021 it's my hope that we will have a slovenian bee house with slovenian bee hives inside it. We are hoping for this, and we are all in with this, and we bought a 32 acre plot of flat land with 30 acres of yellow/red/white clover. Can't wait to get chickens and maybe even some turkeys and a couple pigs too. Great informational videos and one of these days we will make youtube videos. Also, we're about 4 hours or so north of you. We're near kc on the Missouri side.

Just got my two hives into the horizontal hives I built, they have been in about 3 weeks now. I checked them on Wednesday, and it was a world of difference in how aggressive they were. With only opening one small area at a time the bees were gentle and did not have to use much smoke at all. I would like to thank Dr. Leo for his website, and all the information he puts out for free.

It is almost a conspiracy. That is why we need a forum to express our ideas and problems along with solutions. I see the same thing in genetic engineered vegetables and fruit trees. My method is not very precise! When I open a new bag of feed I add a handful of diatomaceous earth. It is approximately 1/2 cup (I'm guessing) and stir it in as deeply as possible with my hands. As the amt of feed in the bag decreases and I can no longer see the earth on the feed, I add the same amount. I most likely use 1and1/3 cup per bag. I just bought feed and when I add the earth this time I will measure it to figure out exactly how much I add.

@@ardenpeters4386 A cup of motor oil spilled on the ground will hardly reach the groundwater. It will be consumed by the microbiota long before it gets there. Bees have no interest in motor oil, they wont drown themselves in anything unless water is unavailable. And having seen this done for years growing up , I know it works very well against Ants. A quarter inch of oil in the bottom of the can is enough to stop them. Water would work but it rots the legs and evaporates too fast.

I have 6 hives now and far and away my best hive is my insulated Layens hive. I converted one of my langstroph hives into a Layens and seems to be doing much better as well! I am in southeast Texas and heat is the main issue. When it got hot they were bearding on my langstroph hives to keep cool but never once bearded on the layens. If the bees have to work less to maintain their temperature they have more time to do more important things! Really looking forward to making splits next year and adding additional colonies. Already built two more insulated layens hives ready for those splits next year! Unfortunately I have had swarm traps up all year and have not yet caught a swarm. But I will have them out again next year!

@@StillDreamingHomestead I did a cutout for that one. It had a lot of cross-comb and comb with no foundation so I just cut it out of those frames and rubber-banded them into the layens frames. You can just cut the frames and comb with a saw to fit...saw a video of Dr Leo doing just that. However, this hive was kind of a mess already.

Thank you. I kept vertical bee hives for around 9 years. Learned from my grandfather. You have to take that knowledge and dig deeper. I haven't had hives for the couple past years with land challenges, but I still have around 50 lbs of honey left HA!. Next Spring I am going the horizontal route and plan on catching swarms. It makes so much more sense and i hate the stresses in managing vertical hives bring to bees and myself. I have bought the books and ready to delve deeper. Thank you for bringing attention to this subject. Mismanagement is a huge issue I think.

This is rather scary, but true story. I live in the Foothills of Alberta Canada's Rocky Mountains . I know a farmer in the British Columbian Interior, and not only does he have a hard time keeping bees alive, but he also has to import thousands of pollinators every year. The problem you ask? His land is surrounded by commercial farmers growing hundreds and hundreds of acres of GMO food. There's no natural bugs to find for miles. Anyone/everyone who can raise bees should, because this is going on around the planet. Further, Dr. Leo's Natural raising techniques should be utilized by our Agricultural Offices as we race to save our bee populations from industrial extermination. Thanks for introducing me to Dr. Leo's Natural Beekeeping methods, hopefully everyone will jump on the bandwagon on this one. 🐝

Great philosophy and advice regarding being mindful of a natural eco-system, letting it tell you what it needs, then adapt the methodology to that. The trouble with knowledge is that a little bit of it can be dangerous. When the ego kicks in, one says, "I'm smarter and will re-invent the wheel or build a better breadbox." But there may have been nothing wrong with the wheel or breabox to begin with. Traditional farming methods of crop rotation, combined with a sustainable population of animals, has worked for thousands of years, without petroleum based fertilizers, lethal pesticides and corporation patented, genetically engineered, sterile frankenfoods. Mother nature usually rewards those who respect her. The example that you two are living is priceless. These vlogs will be a precious 'how to live' series for generations to come. Thanks to both of you for being you. :-)

@@sinisterhipp0, smart, as well! Much of the commercially sold is NOT honey. All of the commercial honey is processed, to death, in other words, like canned goods, juices & cereals, once processed they are then dead, no nutrients left. The loophole they use is the nutrients were there before processing. The same with anything you microwave. Empty but addictive, calories for malnourised, obese people & other animals. 💞👵

ron smith yes 😊 yes. I so totally Agree. I put honey in my coffee. We, my hubby and I, love it like that. One teaspoon for a reg. size cup. Some call a mug a cup of coffee ☕️ Several years ago I had a wonderful website. Nothing totally gets deleted. Ever! So I know it’s buried out in space, somewhere. 🤪😂 It was a weight loss web page. Had a decent number of subs. And tons of friends. Trusting good folk that’s kind of hard to find in our spinning globe 🌎. My avatar is real. Cept it’s dated. Like me. Getting on in years. Three years ago this month on the 26 I fainted. I was walking from the kitchen to the living space. And bam 💥 the lights went out. So my avatar is from before I fainted and broke my spine. Took a surgeon around three hrs. to remove as many fragments of bone out of my broken spine, plus close Neighbors around my spine. I’m Blessed I wasn’t paralyzed from the Tramadol plus a giant muscle relaxers. This is what caused me to pass OUT! Ppl tried to get me to go after the doctors ability to practice medicine in the states. Plus a life time of monies to live the remaining time I had left. I will be 70 next April. This may sound like a long time to some. But blink and look in a mirror. Time Has Wings! Soooo what does all of the letters mean? What does the words mean? They mean Thank The Lord for Bees 🐝 With the Honey bees we can grow food and hopefully we can live, Season to Season. We all need to eat food grown close by. The same holds true for Honey 🍯 Honey 🍯 is safe to eat from decades ago. I recently saw on the news that Honey was found in Tombs of ppl that died centuries ago! I call that a safe reliable source of life giving food. I’m willing to reach out real far away and say, Some folks think nothing about spraying their lawns with killer spray. Zillions of critters that we need to feed the ground, so the ground can feed us, die! Bees are Life giving. They and others are keeping us Alive. Thank you 🙏🏼 God🙏🏼 I’m sorry but I’m not gonna say I’m sorry for this LONG post. Hip Hip Hooray 😃 For HONEY BEES 🐝 🍯💥🍯

Ms Pat My hubby picked up some honey one time at the local Wally. I looked at it. I tasted it. He said look at the ingredients. I looked. He knew I was gonna say, that’s not honey. Look he said, it says 100% honey. I said, Babe what do you want me to see or read. He said, it says right here that it’s real 100% honey. Alert 🚨 this might claim to be 100% Honey but sweets. Pure honey it’s not. I told my sweet hubs to pour it over your French Toast. You’ll probably like it 😂

I bought Dr Leo’s book “Beekeeping with a Smile”. My goal is to get a horizontal hive to set up this spring. I want to try for a swarm but I’m afraid I won’t get one so I may just buy my first batch to start then add on with swarms (the lady I’m talking to says her club buys from Michigan apiaries). I wish I could have come to this class but the UP Michigan is a long way away. ☮️❤️☕️ -Kirsten

When we had the hive visit the garden i could move around them and they didn't bother me at all. They were so cool. Very calm bees. They first landed on my composter, not a pile like i used to have, but an actual manual composter, unfortunately the best i can do where we live now. AZ is hard to keep up a garden compared to living back east. We are looking forward to going back to at least the west side of the Mississippi.

Hi Doug, you may find a scythe or hand scythe quicker/easier to use when removing tall grass/weeds. Diatomaceous earth is good as long as it remains dry- once it gets wet due to dew or rain, it loses its effectiveness.

Get a scythe, it is a great way to keep the grass down and also making mulch or cutting grains. Also great fences Keep everything much more safe and secure. We have fenced all our growing areas with 6’ no climb fences which here in NE Vermont required drilling into rock etc. Big job, nut it keeps the predators out and also many other critters who want to eat our food. ( bears, groundhogs, Fischer’s, porcupine, moose, coyote. Thanks for info on the proper insulation for beehives.

You should try using a scythe to trim around your hives. They cut really well and you don't have to bend down so much. I recommend a European scythe. They are more organomical. You can order one through scythsupply and they will fit it to you based on a few measurements.

Outstanding information Doug. May I suggest that you check out the various species of bees that you have in your given area to see which bees or honey bees are truly native to your area. You would be surprise to learn what you have in your area. And how helpful these other species can be. :-)
