In this video I discuss the specs of the Skutt 818-3 Kiln. I describe electrical requirements and kiln options and also describe best uses for a kiln of this size. Finally, I load it for a bisque firing.

I had an electrician in today the quote back to 1300.00 to install the kiln …. It’s a hard no … $$$

Yea, mine was $800. That's for a 40 amp breaker, 40 or so feet of 8 gauge wire, conduit, emergency cutoff, and the outlet. I was really tired of the two hour round trips to fire my bowls! Maybe get some more quotes? Good luck!

Thanks so much for this video! Does anyone want to share input on how homeowner's insurance handles kilns in houses? I always worry that there is fine print that says they won't pay out if your house burns down.

Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. I finally got my own kiln but i'm a bit lost when it comes to stacking the 2 half moon shelves on top of full moon shelves. I noticed you had 2 half moons at the top of your load and they looked very stable. Do you happen to have any tips on how to do that?

Use more stilts. Half shelves require 3 stilts, same as a full shelf. That means if you use two half shelves it will require 6 stilts. Those stilts take up a lot of kiln space, I'm hoping to get another full size shelf. Half shelves really come in handy when you are firing something tall. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the video! Quick question: when you switched from full shelves to half shelves, where do you put the posts? Are you still using three posts and then having the seam between the two half shelves sitting on one post? Thank you!
@masterofnothing3277
@masterofnothing3277 Жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca. I use three posts under each half shelf. You lose some shelf space, but I think less risk of a shelf falling. Have fun!

Jack of all trades master of none. if not all kilns, the inside bricks seem to crack. There is got to be a company that manufacturers that their bricks do not crack.
@masterofnothing3277
@masterofnothing3277 11 ай бұрын
Almost all kilns are made of 'soft' firebrick because it's lightweight, easy to shape, and provides the highest level of insulation. Hard firebrick is more durable but heavy, hard to shape, and not a good insulator, i.e., it takes a long time to heat up. I don't know of any manufacturer that uses hard firebrick for kiln interiors. However, large kiln exteriors are often made of hard firebrick because of the structural support it offers. 😁

Thank you for this video. Now I know this kiln is a suitable option for me. I was wondering what were your choices of kiln furniture? I'm not sure which ones to get. Thanks 🙏

The furniture i got had 2 full shelves and 3 half shelves as well as stilts from 1 to six inches. Been working great for me. Just did a glaze firing last night, can't wait for her to cool down!😁

Can you tell me where you put your stilts when you did the two half shelves? I'm new and don't under stand how you're putting stilts under 2 halves and still being over the 3 stilts for the whole shelf.
@masterofnothing3277
@masterofnothing3277 Жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly. You need to use 3 stilts for a half shelf. I know they don't line up with the lower shelves like that but it's the only way. Have fun. You'll love having your own kiln! Let me know if I can help with anything else.

@masterofnothing3277
@masterofnothing3277 2 жыл бұрын
Mine had the holes when I got it. I know people drill a hole in the bottom for exhaust vents, but I don't use a vent. Did yours not have the holes in the lid?
@wideeyedwildling
@wideeyedwildling 2 жыл бұрын
@@masterofnothing3277 Mine didn’t come factory drilled at all! I guess is relatively common to drill them, I’m just super nervous about it. My 818 is in my basement, so I have to vent it out.
@masterofnothing3277
@masterofnothing3277 2 жыл бұрын
@@wideeyedwildling its just firebrick in the lid so it'll drill easy. You might call skutt to see if its even needed. When I fire I prop my lid open until about 900 degrees, between that and your vent I'm sure you'll be fine. Enjoy!

If the 1027 is not worth repairing (electrical wise), maybe make a raku kiln out of it. And yes, the 818 is perfect for me.
