Hey! A tip for few cool skyboxes: Doom (ok everyone knows these) But one pretty cool skybox, less known from N64 era- Top Gear Rally, "Strip Mine"-course. None of the KZfaq videos don't really do it justice, but in the game I once just drove to the area closest possible to the water area and it had a very unique feeling. It's very industrial ambience, but the colors are warm and hazy. There's a interesting atmosphere in some sections of this not so well known N64 racing game level. The course feels like there's pollution, it's industrial but it's still somehow hazily beautiful. That juxtaposition is pretty cool. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJxln5p8u-C5cZc.html Check it, get some emulator and experience it yourself. Drive the car around and park it somewhere on the sandy coastline where you can just stare at the skybox for awhile. Cool channel, subscribed! :)

I literally was willing to trade Conker's Bad Fur Day after I bought that at its full $80can price for my friend's Wave Race 64 (my parents vetoed that trade). I still wouldn't have regretted that trade, I got a copy with the box and manual when my local convenience store was getting rid of its n64 rentals, and it's given me WAY more than 80$ of entertainment. I even re-purchased it for the wii and I still fire it up to see if I can get my times and stunt scores higher now and then (or just to drive a dolphin). This game, Tetrisphere and Wetrix were my three picks for games that FELT futuristic. And I think WaveRace 64 was the first game I played that made me get how fun racing games can be when they're done WELL. Nothing's ever going to compare to the feeling of acing Port Blue at top speed on stormy weather for me. Or the wonder of zooming around in Twilight City with all its spotlights and neons and LEDs.

They are pretty simple skyboxes but trying to think of games, the ones in DK64 I must say probably did played a big role in making it feel special to me as a little kid. Like the way the sun is positioned in DK Isles. Then an obscure part that always captivated me is when you climb the giant block tower as Diddy in Frantic Factory for a moment you see what seems to be the outside from a ceiling window. It's a dark starry night or space but either way it hits those vibes you've mentioned before and to me going out on a night drive as a kid. I got similar feelings whenever it was night in Toy Story 1 and 2. Then shoutouts to creepy castle with its moon and its reuse as a creepy mystery in Hideout Helm. DK64 is just so underrated when it comes to talking about games setting up amazing atmosphere immersion imo.

Wow, I haven't seen this channel in a long time! I remember watching the first few seasons of EggBusters whenever GoNintendo highlighted them. As far as N64 skyboxes go, I recently rediscovered how good the Diddy Kong Racing's skyboxes are. The night-time snow mountain one in particular is very detailed. If you want a non-N64 game to talk about, Kirby Air Ride backgrounds are fascinating. As for 2D(ish) games, Kirby's Return to Dream Land is an interesting case. The backgrounds are large and so crammed full of details (maybe too many) that the mood of the scene can change as you scroll through it.
