I'm pretty sure that "dungeon" you guys found, is the stronghold. There's a few mods that re-make the layout of the stronghold and make it more interesting, and make it have more loot.

They could've made for both of them a full iron tools there was enough iron for that and even a diamond sword and two golden apples each there was already three golden apples inside the chest and enough gold for another one. there was even bow and some arrows in there…
