the first time I saw Skyhooks. went to all all day concert at Blacktown showground, Billy Thorpe headlined, but also on the bill was Stevie Wright. unfortunately Stevie was too scagged out to turn up, the MC announced this and we were very disappointed, then he said a new band from Melbourne would be playing instead. well the mention of Melbourne just made us even more mad, this was Sydney remember! . When skyhooks came on stage all dressed up we fell about laughing. But OMG half way through the first song they had us, just unbelievably together. love at first sight, and still up there as the most original band this country ever produced. And yes, we did dance, and screamed and loved every minute of it

That concert was the first decent. full on line up of the day, the biggest thing to happen to this place up to this time and even to the present time .I helped to put this show on, with many hours of work with just a few other people .Diesel and Jon Stevens also attended, had a bit of a chat with Diesel. just before the Aztecs came on .I was already into Skyhooks, having seen them at an earlier concert , I was blown away by the bass riffs and the power of the guitar playing, not to mention the song stories and the strength of reds stern stance and delivery of his mastery. Blacktown has the vibe of great music that started in The old Showground, and in later years, this vibe payed a long visit to the Comb And Cutter, one of this nations best venues for top line music of the late 70s and the 80s.

He's incredibly talented. Didn't just play straight beats, he improvised. If you listen to the whole band, that's what they all did. None of this chunk-a-chunk chord stuff and over the top drum rolls. I met him in 1999 and had a long chat. Great bloke.

How about Freddie's drumming on "Motorcycle Bitch". I'd say the most use of cowbell in rock history, but the whole drum track is brilliant, cause he's so talented.

My God! Only 6 months later we were rocking to them at the Hordern Pavillion headlining, in fact, the date was 27/3/1975. The other acts were Renee Geyer (she was mercilessly booed off and started crying, broke my heart), and Buster Brown who performed before her were great and later on became Rose Tattoo and the drummer from that band (Phil Rudd) went on to join AC/DC, and the rest is history...…………..but they were great days. Yeah!

Probably the first band in the 70s of Cross Dressers to come out of the Closet and Parade with Glory. The Music was fun and very original for the Time . My pub scene to see Skyhooks AC/DC Hush Radiators Cold Chisel Rose Tattoo and more with a Redback and got me through all night. Those were the Days. Wonder what it takes to do the same in this Time of Inflation and Greed. Love how the Music would compromise the Words and then have the highs and lows of the Instruments. Someone should do a Documentary on Skyhooks Music and Song Writing as the Words were very clear and the music was very original. You can hear every instrument clearly unlike some Bands of the 70s and 80s. I think the album Living in the 70s was a Hit but the next Albums flopped for some reason. Anyway they were Fun and Enjoyable.✌️🫶🇦🇺

Definitely agree with you there (along with Rob Hirst of course). Not only was Freddie a highly accomplished drummer but every element of Skyhooks musically was top notch. Greg and Freddie were a totally locked-in rhythm section, Red and Bongo were superb guitarists, Shirl's voice was awesome - he doesn't hit a duff note throughout this performance - and the lyrics are sheer poetry. Yet another highly underrated Australian band that I will never understand why they never made it big outside their home country. Perhaps a little too Australian, I guess the rest of the world wasn't ready for them. Sydney couldn't even handle them judging by this footage. Their loss. (I would've killed to have been at this gig).
