Lee from Skylark Music Studios walks you through how to approach buying cymbals at the Drummer's Workshop in Mayford, UK. In this video, Lee considers which types of cymbal you want to be looking at for different genres and situations, and discusses the main things that you want to be listening and looking for in a cymbal. There's also a quick demo on how to hit cymbals to achieve the best possible sound, and some tips for buying on a budget.
Remember to subscribe so you don't miss any future releases!
Special thanks to John for the use of the workshop, you can find more at:

I think everyone has an idea in their head on what sound they are looking for out of cymbals. I'd say go to a store, check out each type of cymbal your looking for till you find one that suits the sound your looking for (or close to it). Find one as close as possible to the budget you have. I like Sabain and I go on their site as well as the Memphis Drum Shop to hear real examples of the cymbals to choose what works for me. And that process works great. Don't let anyone tell you what you should get. It's all personal preference + budget. I don't even pick cymbals based on genre. I pick cymbals I like the sound of.

Oh dear. The cheapest but most necessary item which is hardly mentioned is the drumstick. The sound of the cymbal will vary greatly according to the type of stick deployed. The size, wood density, weight, the type of stick changes the tone incredibly. Just try your own ride using different stick types. I recently acquired a 20 inch Solar by Sabian, for £15 and experimenting with different sticks found it is very usable. Try try try and forget the hype.
@boomerguy9935
@boomerguy9935 8 ай бұрын
Yes! I use different sets of sticks for the different venues I play. The venue may be large, small, jazz, pop and in a room that may be acoustically friendly or hostile with echoes bouncing around. My sets of sticks are grouped with my cymbal sets. The same sticks can vary with different cymbals and vice versa. There are so many variables involved AFTER you buy your cymbals.

I recent got back into drumming and got Sabians XSR's for the kit. Didn't care for them a bit. Discovered Dream Cymbals and after trying out some at the drum shop, swapped all the Sabians out for Dream Bliss cymbals. I actually prefer the sounds of the Bliss over Zildjians also.

Ok I like the way thin big cymbals sound they have a nice wash that isnt piercing. Heavy small cymbals sound very high pitched and too piercing and sometimes glassy. I like to play a bit of everything and I'm a pretty hard hitter. I have cymbals I love now I try to play with correct technique but these cymbals have been played for years since I was a kid (17 now) and before that they were played by my dad for years in his drumming days. The crash ride and crash have cracked twice now i grinded out the cracks and they sound good but I feel they are brittle now and when I hit them decently hard to get them to their full wash watching them move and bend after I do it, it seems like the cymbals saying oooh shit hold on I'm getting brittle. It feels they are on their last stretch. I want to get something as good as I have. I'm looking at buying the A 391 set. It has medium ride that's crashable which I love and the cymbals are medium thin which seems perfect. I think once I get them I'll resort to the cymbals I have now for jazz or low volume settings and use the new ones for just about everything and when I want to play with more energy. Once I play a cybal I learn their maximum point when they will sound best and how hard to hit it to get it their and my cymbals are getting old and dont like staying in that area. I think a fresh set and really making sure my technique is right will make me more confident in that I wont break anything and that I will be able to get the sound I want with no worries. Sorry for the spam it sounded like you have it figured our I just wanted to see what feedback you might have

@AcapRoseknightDrummer
@AcapRoseknightDrummer 8 жыл бұрын
usually i used my 17" as my secondary crash, my main is 18" which i used for main rhythm during chorus. IMO, 17" has too much sustain in it. I would prefer something like a 16" fast crash as my secondary. 14.25" was awesome, i love the swashy-sizzling sound that it make. but if i was given the choice i would have chosen the standard K hi-hats rather than K Custom.
@nathandrums0
@nathandrums0 8 жыл бұрын
That's what I've heard about 17" crash, I tried the 19" and loved it, I would probably use the 19 or 18" as a main and like you said the 17" as a offhand crash

Do you believe in "Sets" of cymbals overall?? I personally don't-- that sort of thing never went on until relatively recently with improved cymbal technology- it makes more sense to me that you would pick from different groups of cymbals- as example, my main ride is dark and fairly dry and a more quiet cymbal- hammered thin but not lathed-- so my natural inclination is to find a brilliant louder higher pitched cymbal for a left hand ride crash------ but I definitely won't find those characteristics looking at the same series that my main ride is from-- and yet I see even Pro's using cymbals all in the same series...... are they doing this just as a way to promote their cymbal companies product I guess is my question-----
@boomerguy9935
@boomerguy9935 8 ай бұрын
My cymbal sets are grouped according to the type of music I may be playing and the to the room I may be playing in. A dinner dance with full carpeting and a small dance floor will sound completely different from a giant banquet hall with extremely high ceilings, giant dance floor and varying acoustics. Each cymbal set will have its dedicated sticks. So many variables...

Hit zildjian k for beginer. As a beginner, you may not hear the quality, but you will get it later, those cymbal are versatile enough. Maybe change the crash with other lighter stuff like meinl byzance extra thin hammered crash. Never buy lower or medium price range, NEVER! Better buy used than go cheap. There are many brand that sounds amazing, but save the adventure for later. Developing taste takes time

Ive used every brand over the years but the last time i refit my set for a tour i went back to Paiste 2002 . I was using small 2002 crashes 12-18" Which were great for touring because they don't take up a lot of room and can take a serious beating . When i went back to the studio to record i was listening to an old led zeppelin album and loved the extended decay of Bonzo's big old cymbals . So i got to work and found the huge 22-24" 2002 paiste crashes . Ive never gone back to anything below an 18" :)

This seemed kinda useless. I don't really agree with everything he said (especially about how to 'Correctly' hit a cymbal). His entire commentary was basically "If you buy paired cymbals... well then they'll all come to together." and "high-end cymbals are usually better sounding than low-end cymbals." Everything else was basically just his biased opinion.
