Geronimo the alpaca has been killed by government vets "to prevent the spread of disease", despite a lengthy legal battle to save his life.
The animal was put down after being taken from its farm in Gloucestershire, days before a destruction warrant ordering its death was due to expire on 4 September.
The alpaca had twice tested positive for bovine TB, but his owner claims the testing process was flawed and Geronimo was a "healthy, happy animal".

If it was my animal and there was no way back from having it euthanised, I think I would rather have it done quietly .. it must have been very stressful for the poor animal being dragged off by strangers watched by a noisy crowd. Badly handled all round.

j Knight : Geronimo looked happy and healthy to me and yes, he was kept isolated. I still say the court could have issued the owner with an order to continue to keep him isolated as he was kept purely as a pet. We all know the consequences can be severe if the rules of an order are broken so most people adhere to them. The court obviously didn't want to consider that preferring to stick to the rules of the book instead.

I am very sorry for Geronimo, but if he did have an infectious disease and did not respond to medication, then this was the right thing to do. And I cannot believe that the vets would conspire against a poor alpaca. They obviously checked the other animals and they were negative. Would it have been better to infect them too? Then the disease spreads even further? Because that's how it always starts.

There are real questions about the test the government is using, and the farming community should support an investigation into a test which potentially condemns its cattle unnecessarily, instead there is a doubling down on the case of this poor innocent. There is so much cruelty in the world, but every individual has to experience it alone. Poor little alpaca to be mistreated at his end.

TB is a serious disease that has caused a pandemic in the past and is still a very potent pandemic threat. After a bit of research, I found that Geronimo caught a particularly nasty strain that had potential to jump from animal to human and can cause serious illness and even death. Sadly, it seems as though that fate was against him, in some cases this has to happen for our health and safety, which some people such as these activists don't understand. I feel terribly sorry for his owner, losing an animal is never easy. RIP.

I wouldn't be surprised if the post-mortem test ends-up being negative. I also wouldn't trust anyone but an un-biased 3rd party to perform the postmortem test. It's truthfully quite ridiculous that they would put him down before re-testing. After all, it took them Four years to get to this point. It couldn't wait a bit longer? What an Uncoordinated lot.

Yeah no, I read up on this a bit. Geronimo had two tests and both of them were positive. TB is no joke either, it's dangerous and infectious, the owner should've culled it peacefully when she had the chance. Also apparently the owner kept the alpaca separate from the rest of the herd so the others mayyy be safe? Edit: and the tests, while they are not perfect, they are deemed to be reliable. The benefit of removing a potential biohazard greatly outweighs the loss of one animal life.

Has to be done, she could have gotten other tests but refused because she didn't want her animal killed. I can sympathise with her but at the same time if the animals TB spreads it could cause many thousands of cattle to be culled causing millions in damages. But at the same time, I don't know what she's on about. The test used has an average accuracy of 88% against false negatives and 99.98% against false positives. So it's generally quite accurate.

Looks like to me that the owner wasn’t a responsible keeper. Responsible animal keepers would have haltered the animal loaded it into the trailer to keep the animal stress levels to a minimum. Not invite tv crews and rent a mob. No cops just a ministry vet.

Horrible to see a beautiful animal like this needlessly killed. I do wonder how much the owner enjoyed the publicity though. If this animal was truly beloved and it was mine, I would have made sure someone 'stole' it: to live a private life in a field on the other side of the country with a few other fugitive alpacas rather than allow it to become the centre of a media circus.

Why if there were no way out of the poor animal being euthanised, could they not have taken him to a shed where he knew the smells, and along with a vet and his owner euthanise him via an injection? At least give him that 'good death' surrounded by people he knew cared for him. Instead he was terrified by being manhandled and forced by strangers. Along with people shouting and a bolt put through his head. This is barbaric, beyond cruel. Those government officials should be ashamed of themselves. Where's the humanity Geronimo had feelings and fears the same as any human? I don't know how they sleep at night.

If the government testing is flawed and they seriously consider that it was a false negative did they go to an outside veterinarian to have him retested? Why did the authorities only take the one animal and not the entire herd? If bovine tuberculosis is as deadly and contagious as is reported were tests done any of the other animals in the herd? We're there any other positive test results on the animals on the farm? If he came into the country with a false test then when did he come into contact with a diseased animal to contract the disease? Too many unanswered questions.
