Well they gave Dianne Abbott praise and she's on record stating "every defeat of the British state is a victory for all of us", "White people love playing 'divide and rule'", and "blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" were unsuitable to be NHS nurses as they'd never met a black person before (not only implying that there are no black Finnish people, but also that the opposite must then be true that any person from a non-majority white country would be unsuitable for the same reasons). Still, the civility is important and sets a tone for political debate that rarely prevails on-line. For now, the election is over. Wherever we stand on the political spectrum, we can wish him well, because his success will be our success, We can be hopeful that he will lead with integrity and wisdom. We might be sceptical of his chances, but he is in the driving seat, so we should wait to see how he handles it.

He had over a year to prove he could be a good PM, whilst he was PM. He didn't manage to do so. Racism could play a small part in his defeat, but by and large it was a defeat of the back of deep dissatisfaction with his party, not just himself.

So I'd say the bar is pretty low for compliments.

Maybe if Sunak demonstrated a little more grace in government and while electioneering, I'd have a little more empathy for him. This idea that bellicose is somehow regarded as bold, strong, and authoritative is wrong and self-destructive. Intelligent, compassionate, and responsible are far more important.

Starmer is really good at reaching out across the house to acknowledge people's humanity. It's disarming, and it creates a tone of civility and compassion that I hope will frame the heated political exchanges to come. He doesn't appear to be cowed by his new position, if anything he seems more relaxed than when he was leader the opposition. I thought this was a good début. He's not the leader that everyone wanted, but he might yet prove to be the leader we need.
