Afghanistan: RAF pilot reveals near miss on the runway at Kabul airport

An RAF pilot has revealed his aircraft nearly smashed into a bus carrying evacuees at Kabul airport, as he was taking off.
Wing Commander Kev Latchman revealed military air traffic controllers had been praying for him when they saw his C-17 transport aircraft hurtling towards a line of three vehicles that had taken a wrong turn while trying to reach another evacuation flight.

There is a lot of blame to go around for a lot of things but the evacuation of 100000 people from a war zone without any incident is just an unimaginably amazing job by everyone involved. that one incident with C17 became the face of the operation just because people failed to understand how desperate the situation was and why it is a miracle that only one such incident occurred.

@@ahoesablow Point taken. Already in Pakistan, refugees are complaining about the conditions that they are living in. Though not ideal, it's temporary.They are the lucky ones - they escaped not just from Taliban rule, but from extreme poverty My question was (and still is) why didn't the wealthy, predominantly Muslim countries viz Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia step up to assist ?

Afghan refugee to NZ (and Fullbright Scholarship winner) Abbas Nazari has written a book (2021)that covers his experiences and adapting to Western Society. He made some good points during radio interviews at the time of the book launch, about the challenges his family faced and how they overcame them.

During the time they were evacuating people, commercial flights were closed. However there was still 1 commercial airliner operating. PIA were the only commercial airliner operating and helped to evacuate around 3000 people majority of them being non Pakistani citizens. They have also helped around 100k people with transit flights and visa on arrival

All Afghans have one date of birth - January 1, as records are not kept, year of birth is determined by subtracting one's age from current year (which is Muslim year, like 1380)
