NRL’s biggest stars attempting to ‘push rugby league into America’

Some of the National Rugby League’s biggest stars have taken over the world-famous strip in Las Vegas ahead of next year's season-opening doubleheader in America.
Fox Sports NRL reporter James Hooper says the NRL is embarking on a “US promotional blitz” in terms of promoting the game in the United States.
“They are attempting to push rugby league into America,” he said.
“It’s not everybody’s cup of tea - obviously, it’s not as popular in the US as it is back home, but at the same time, there was some interest.
“They love the fact that there was no helmets and they love the fact that there’s no pads.”

Now they're trying to link up with some huge international gambling organisation. Here's an idea. Instead of chasing international high rollers how about help for grass roots football. As an American who loves the game and wants to see it grow, I cannot agree with these words more. The game needs support at the grassroots, NOT trying to go and get gambling money to stay alive. It just...doesn't feel right to do it right now. I know Vegas is a rising star in global sport...but is this the way forward?

Nrl need to be taking the game to the Pacific Islands, a trial game, the World Cup. They stopped the mid year tests last yr for what reason. As an Aussie I'd rather watch more of other teams then Australia play

Look at some of these losers in the comments. The NRL is actually attempting to grow the game outside it’s heartlands, done all this work in partnering with UFC, finally partnering up with the USARL/PCRL in organising a 9’s event for American RL teams, a USA vs Canada match…and yet they still talk trash about it. I wish I was there! It’s shaping up to be a great weekend of rugby league entertainment. I don’t care if the real intention is to enter the US sports betting market or whether it’s a sellout or not(it won’t be) the fact they have actually put some effort into making this a festival of the game of rugby league is commendable. It’s the 1st year of a 5 year plan so a few hick ups is to be expected. Despite its flaws, I am so glad the NRL have the initiative to take the competition out of its comfort zone and into the biggest market in the world. God forbid you have the parochial mindset some fans have of keeping the game strictly on the Eastern seaboard of Australia. It’s not enough that the NRL had a record breaking 2023 season, crowds, ratings, revenues…no, no that’s simply not enough for some people. But overall, thank you NRL for taking the game to American fans and also including the rugby league teams there! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this new venture. Also, you need to take the NZ Warriors there next year. There seems to be a large contingent of Pacifica Warrior fans there who are dying to see a Warrior’s game live!

Never take off for 2 reasons 1. The games too fast yanks won’t be able to keep up with it. 2. NFL will never let NRL in on their turf. And there’s a 3rd reason which is cultural. Americans love pomp and pageantry Aussies love beers and ruckus.

I think NRL is more interested in the Gambling scene and they want a slice of the cake Rugby League will never take off in the US for the following reasons 1. One it is not a home grown sport and 2. The NFL do NOT want competition and will sabotage every effort

Nice try. VFL had ALREADY "cut it" in the USA back in the late 70's, before it was such a threat to NFL they had to ban it. The very fact that it was so *different* to rugby was seen as a attractive novelty, rather than a hinderance.@@colejones6312
