In Vietnam A-1E Skyraiders from the 1st Air Commando are racing to aid a base under attack. Leading the charge is Major Bernard F. Fisher. Disaster strikes when the plane of Major Dafford Myers is shot down. There's relief as a figure emerges from the flames scurrying away. Myers is unhurt but pinned down by the quickly approaching enemy. When Fisher realizes a rescue chopper is too far away there's only one thing to do. He's going to have to conduct a rescue mission himself. In an incredible feat of bravery, he lands his Skyraider under enemy fire on a runway that's way too short. Could he pull off an amazing rescue in an A-1E Skyraider?

Fisher and Meyers were not the only ones there that day!. My father was the third spad there that day. While fisher made that rescue, dad was strafing the troops trying to capture Meyers and shot up fisher's plane. When he ran out of ordnance to hit the enemy. He would make ultra low passes trying to as he said "cut their heads off". He was awarded the Air Medal for his actions that day. He went on after the military to have a twenty year career with Pan Am. Lost him in '94.

The A-1 Skyraider was a supposedly obsolete WWII aircraft. The very things people would see as detractions of such an aircraft also made it invaluable during the Vietnam conflict. It was slow but nimble. It could get down in the weeds where the pilots could tell friend from foe and act accordingly. Unlike the fuel guzzling jets at the time, the Skyraider could both carry a heavy weapons load AND stay on station for quite a while. The Skyraider also could take a beating and still keep flying. Skyraiders would fly into North Vietnam and aid in the rescue of downed American pilots. It was very remarkable aircraft. I do believe that turboprop aircraft like the Super Tucano and others have a place on the modern battlefield where the ultra slow flying, low altitude, maneuverable airplane with a long loiter time backed up by a ton of weapons weapons would be an invaluable asset to our infantry in close combat......
@StLMikie

And fortunately in this case, it was a “slow” plane that required much less runway for takeoff and landing than its much faster counterparts.

The Brits were using WW2 aircraft during the Korean War. Mosquito didn't retire until 1963. The likes of the Tempest, Spitfire and such retired just before the mid 50's, I'm sure if the brits entered Vietnam War they would have pressed some into service. Especially the Hawker Sea Fury and Mosquito. They are a viable option at the time especially CAS. I mean they are even thinking about getting rid of the infamous A10 with a prop aircraft. Cheaper option. Although those are quite big shoes to fill imo.
@gfdx3214
@gfdx3214 Жыл бұрын
I also feel like slow aircraft are handy in a modern battlefield in the correct scenario. If an enemy has too many good air defences it would be suicide to send aircraft like these into the fray, but the kind of mission showed here is certainly a good place to try it out
@ryanfreebody6881
@ryanfreebody6881 Жыл бұрын
@@gfdx3214 they did do a documentary on a mission that was a testbed for a prop CAS aircraft over Afghanistan and it proved successful, only problem I forgot the name of the aircraft. 😆 all I can say is that it is a twin prop older aircraft compared to the tech at the time, it was very capable of sending in boom booms into tight civilians dense areas to get the right targets. However, going on the current Ukrainian war I feel that this venture is now obsolete and will even state the A10 is too. It seem drones are the way forward, they are far cheaper and very capable. Plus there is no risk to losing a pilot and such.

There was a similar story in 1944, on the Eastern front. A Hungarian Bf-109 pilot landed behind Soviet lines to rescue his downed wingman, snatching him away from under the nose of Soviet infantry. Quite a feat considering that the Messerschmitt was a single seat fighter, and it was notoriously prone to undercarriage failure, so landing one in deep snow, on unknown terrain was outright crazy.

One of my favorite rescue stories. Fisher's fellow pilots kept making low level strafing passes even after they ran out of ammo, to keep the VC heads down.One account states Fisher's Skyraider was found to have over 75 bullet holes. My great grandfather flew sabres in korea, interceptors inter-war and skyraiders in Vietnam, then F16s afterwards. Thankfully, just before he recently passed away this july I had the opportunity to ask him about flying and going mach 2 in the F104, toss bombing nukes and so on. He told me many horror stories about each and every one of his best friends giving their all to save guys on the ground but not making it. The tale that stuck with me the most was about a brand new kid flying an old A1 on his very first mission in country. The kid followed him into a straifing run, but when he called out to him on the radio he heard nothing. Turning around all he could see was a fireball where his wingman was supposed to follow him out of the dive. That wasnt even the worst story, but i would have to ask his son about all kinds of other tales. It's always great to see films like this! One can only wish I might have been able to share them with him. Keep up the good work!

One of my favorite war stories is that of sidi nsir, 1942. A small British artillery position held off an immense attack from the Germans long enough to prevent them from attacking a critical port in North Africa. Forget a lot of the details, but the KZfaqr Lindybeige does a great video on it.
