Skyrim is a land of numerous creatures, but perhaps the Elder Scrolls 5's most iconic inhabit would have to be Dragons. Large, winged beasts, said to be the children of Akatosh, the Dragons of Skyrim have returned from a long slumber and now seek to bring the world under their rule once again. Central to the game's plot, Skyrim's Dovahs are discussed frequently by the game, yet there's still quite a bit about these creatures the title intentionally tries to hide. So today we'll be taking a look at five things you (probably) never knew about the Dragons of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

It would make sense, the Nords worshipped the dragons, the dragons were still in charge, when the elves attacked Sarthaal, it disrupted the dragon’s servants and work basically, and maybe the dragons wanted The Eye Of Magnus, Dragons do meddle in magic, so they maybe worked together to take over Skyrim and then the Dragon Cult rose, then the war against dragons and the cult, and the Eye was forgotten, but the Nords must of had help from dragons during the battle against falmer first… 500 people killing all elves? Hmmm seems exaggerated, and exactly what one side would write about the other, and they did build tons of temples to worship dragons in all over after they took over Skyrim. It’s dragon magic that keeps Draugr slowly feeding their life to the high Priest, just like a Dragonborn absorbs the soul of a dragon, a dragon priest can learn magic taught to them by dragons on how to absorb the life of others… it’s why few know this power, dragonborns, very high Priests, the graybeards and dragons themselves know how to do it.. The dragons were always in charge and they liked their slaves... Dragons probably stayed in Atmora at first, ruling over Men, that’s why Elves barely mention them? (Idk if elves or Falmer ever mention dragons as a problem) who then came to Skyrim from Atmora after they made a deal to take over Skyrim for them and the Nords and wipe the elves out, something only a ruthless dragon army could and would do…. Maybe 🤷🏽‍♂️

The idea that Paarthurnax put the scales on the shrine is interesting. If he flew there one night, it might explain why Sissel thinks she's seen him in her dreams. Also, we do know he has left the Throat of the World on rare occasions before. According to him, he used to visit Numinex in Dragonsreach from time to time.

I find it important to point out that you don’t have to be Dragonborn to use the Thu’um. Miraak is the confirmed first Dragonborn. I find it more likely, instead, that the dragons simply taught Ysgramor the Thu’um, like the Greybeards did Ulfric Stormcloak.

About the fourth spot, the dragon scales could be from Paarthurnax, I remember that in Rorikstead near the shrine is this girl named Sissel and she said this: "I had a dream that there was a good dragon. He was old and gray, but he wasn't scary." This can mean something, maybe it was not a dream, and she saw Paarthurnax near the shrine, just a theory :D

Ive got some interesting little details that might interest you 1. I dont know if this is a well known fact. But in the companions, you could ask Athis the reason why he join the companion, he would then say the lines from Indiana jones. HOWEVER, should you ask him again he would mock the player for being too annoying, he will actually notice that the dragonborn ask the same question twice, which he says "to get away from people who ask the same questions twice" or somewhere along that line 2. After joining up with the companions, fighting with vilkas in the yard. You could talk to kodlak and he will say the word "eyes on the horizon" what's interesting is during the quest proving honor. A contradicting statement is muttered by Farkas on dustman cairn "eyes on the prey, not the horizon" this is a little nod to Farkas wolfish personality and Kodlak's wisdom where he see fit that Sovngarde would be his home. 3. You could stumble upon Kodlak and Torvar talking about which weapon they like to use. Kodlak said that in his younger years he likes to use a bigger weapon but now he have a hard time lifting a greatsword, which then he says he still love to bludgeon someone with a hammer. Well if you check out the living quarters on his room would be a steel warhammer. It doesnt end there, when you return from gathering glenmoril witches head Kodlak will die while holding the same steel warhammer. The conversation from Torvar foreshadows how Kodlaks fighting years are behind him (too frail to wield a warhammer) and he will not survive the companions questline. Hope you take notice.

I agree with "eyes on the horizon" being about Kodlak thinking of Sovngarde, but I think that "eyes on the prey" is more about focusing on the task in front of you (lest the prey (or task) get away from you, or even hurt you), more than any wolfishness. (Beyond the choice of analogy.)

I realized something about the fourth fact regarding the dragon scales at the Akatosh shrine. Nate mentioned that Paarthurnax is the only dragon that's been around since the dragons disappeared, and therefore is the most likely candidate for the source of those scales. However, that would mean risking exposing his existence by flying to that open spot close to a settlement - Rorikstead. Well, may I remind, that we *do* have an instance of someone in Rorikstead mentioning Paarthurnax, albeit vaguely. Sissel - one of Lemkil's daughters - mentions she had a dream of an old and gray dragon who "wasn't scary". Perhaps it's possible that Paarthurnax *did* risk a trip to the shrine at least a little bit before the game takes place, and Sissel managed to see him during the night, although believing that it was just a dream.

Arngeir tells us that Kynareth first gave humans the gift of the Voice. So, Kynareth must also be a dragon then, as the Voice is in fact dragon speech. People definitely knew that dragons had existed, I mean the Jarl of Whiterun has a dragon skull in his palace and the story of dragonsreach in general was always considered historical. I do have a bit of a mystery - one that I literally thought of as I was watching this video. Why are Paarthurnax and Durnehviir the only dragons that are visually old? Could it be possible that denying or being denied their nature (that of conquerors and rulers) somehow changed them? Why do no other dragons seem to age? I get that Alduin had to raise most of them from the dead, but literally none of them look old.
@SoiledWig
@SoiledWig 2 жыл бұрын
i think you may've answered your own question. Paarthurnax and Durnevir have lived continuously for thousands of years, whereas the others were killed in the first era and brought back just now. There's no aging when you don't occupy a physical body.

I mean, we already had the 'dragonbreaks' and mercurial Elder Scrolls themselves, which resolve all the potential endings for open-ended stories, so it seems only fitting to have an entire race who can create still more solutions just in case. Although, the true genius was to embed hints at a still never-observed female version of that ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card who fills in all the plot holes we haven't even thought of yet but could potentially arise if anyone examines the lore too closely.

From what I understand; many innocent lives were slaughtered in Sarthaal. Many men, women, and children; many noncombatants dying at the end of a sword. Ysgramor wanted the Snow Elves to know the pain of the Nords. The problem was; the Snow Elves were an empire. They weren't familiar with the concept of feeling defenseless like the people of Sarthaal. For the Snow Elves to know the pain felt by Sarthaal, Ysgramor sought to treat them as they treated Sarthaal; slaughter all without any mercy. It's a very simple concept, really; and befits the very logic of a true Nord.

I never really thought about Dwarves and Dragons existing at the same time before and now I'm wondering: what was the Dwarves' opinion on the Thu'um? The Dwarves were all about tonal magic, the creation of seemingly impossible effects through the use of sound. Did they respect the power of the Thu'um as a sort of naturally existing tonal magic, or did they look down on it as a sort of raw/imperfect application?
@DoubleBoost23

The two of them have a chat in Dovazhul and insult the notion of you identifying as a dragon by being dragonborn. Alduin (and by extension, all dragons and dragonborn individuals) are demigods. Hi Nate! You mentioned the Dragons might have come from the continent Akavir, and the name of the Dragon mentioned sounded similar to Akintosh. Well, Akavir also sounds similar to Akintoah, which would further the theory that the dragon/ruler is Akintosh. I was also fascinated with Akavir, and was wondering (and requesting) that you make a “Five Things You May Not Have Know About...” about Nirn, and the continents in Nirn. The games only take place in Tamriel, and I think it would be cool to hear about other places in Nirn. That’s all! Love the content! Have a good day!

With regards to Saarthal and whether Ysgramor was a dragon priest. My personal dragon theory - I think the Nords were sent to Skyrim by their dragon masters to find and secure the artifact known as the Eye of Magnus (Dragons could probably sense it's Aedric power naturally similar to the way that wizard knew of it using the oculury), under the pretense that they were just settlers to keep the snow elves off their backs. When the snow elves realized what the Nords had found they attacked out of panic of such a powerful dangerous artifact being misused or because coveted it for themselves. Ysgramor escaped and reported to the Dragons about the Eye and then was sent back with a big army along with Dragon's to genocide the elves. The Nords retook Saarthal but the Dragons could probably recognize the Eye as an Artifact of another Aedra (Magnus) and thus a potential threat to them or all of Mundus perhaps. So they buried its existence and commanded it to be hidden away.

Now, Parthuurnax's horn is interesting indeed... I have noticed he is missing that part, but I always assumed that he was missing it as a result from a battle before the alligance with Jurgen and the founding of the way of the voice. I mean... It is stated a lot in the lore how the dragons existed long before the humans. And also about the shrine in Rorikstead - if you speak to Sissel, one of the children in the town, she mention that she have had dreams about a dragon. This fact can give a lot of speculations and theories going. :) And the ninth dragon preist mask "Kohnariik" can strengthen the theory about Ysgramor being a dragon priest, it does translate into "warlord" but we really have nothing that suggests that. I gave this a little thought as I watched this video. :)

12:50 It was definitely Paarthurnax paying tribute to A-Ka-Tosh at the Rorikstead shrine. Sissel, one of the little girls, caught him. She thought she was dreaming, though. 9:30 He's Vivec. I'm not kidding, I'm not being metaphorical. Vivec transcended Morrowind and came alive in Kirkbride's head during the amphetamine binge where he wrote the trunk of Morrowind lore. He's a ghost in the man's head and knows it.

Ysgramor could also have been a powerful enough Dragonborn that he actually scared the dragons and that's why they didn't start ruling in Skyrim until he died. It wouldn't explain his brutality towards the Snow Elf Innocents, but it's a theory.

An interesting note on that line in "Mysterious Akavir," It sounds much like the line in Shakespeare's King Henry VI, Part 2, Act IV, Scene 2. "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers".

13:10 To me, I see some peasant out in the woods in the days before, or even on the day the game starts, seeing a dragon burst free and maybe lose some scales as it did so. The peasant being terrified of what he witnessed lays out the scales as his ancestors did to prevent the beast from returning and eating him.

Alduin is known as an aspect of Akatosh, with Akatosh being the birth of the world, Auriel being its preservation, and Alduin being its inevitable end. Could Akatosh's invasion of Tamriel refer to Alduin? I may be completely off here.

19:03 Good theory but you're forgetting the elves attacked first, and when they did attack they pretty much used the same hostility as Ysgramor when he came back with the great army. Personally speaking i think both sides were being manipulated.

Well, something we need to consider is this: Why did the Dragons leave either Atmora or Akavir? No species ever really leaves their homeland unless they have to. Either due to population, resource depletion, climate change or war. We're assuming they came as conquerors. What if they were fleeing something, something capable of freezing an entire continent and terrifying even Alduin and Akatosh? Interestingly enough, this may well have been the Greymarch by Jyggalag. Given Ice is fundamentally the ordered state of water and that Jyggy was very close to actually taking control of all of Oblivion...that would have had some real world effects.

I still remember when dragons would scare the shit out of me in this game. I thought they were so OP and i would run everytime i seen one. lol. Just seeing that one flying around the mountain top NW of Whiterun would make me panic haha. I would give up just about anything to be able to go back to that time of playing. Just forget the game and start all over. Skyrim was the first game i ever become hardcore obsessed with and it was great then.

5:43 Is no one gonna talk about how this quote could be directly referencing the emperor Uriel Septim V? He started a conquest to take the continent of Akavir, where he presumably died. No one officially knows how he died but it is said by claimed survivors of the expedition that he was attacked by snake people. Who could have been these “Snake Vampires”. Also when Todd Howard was talking about mysteries in fantasy and the elder scrolls lore, he mentioned the mystery of Uriel Septim V. When he was talking about it he said that Bethesda originally thought of the idea of Uriel Septim V returning with an army of dragons to reclaim the throne of Tamriel. Considering the fact Uriel was a Septim and had the “Dragonblood” I wouldn’t be surprised if he would be name the Tiger-dragon EMPEROR, as stated in the quote. Is this just a coincidence or? Also here is a video referencing what Todd said about Uriel Septim V and his conquest in Akavir: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htVpdqh4sbiZd3U.html Go to 11:37 in that video for the Uriel Septim V theory
