It's next to impossible overtaking with modern cars in Monaco. You can tell the size difference by glancing alone. Modern cars are bigger and longer than the cars from yesteryears.

Modern F1 fans have no clue of what racing is. This was before the downforce era, where cars could race tightly without worry of dirty air.

@@amanwholikescars I actually didn't know that ....Thanks for informing me, but regardless of the penalty at the end .....that type of battle is what most F1 fans (including myself) miss about the sport. Nowadays it's all just bureaucracy and the penalty you speak of just proves it.

I know right? This race was outstanding and thrilling compared to modern Grand Prix. It was so much more excitement. You could see the drivers struggle and trying to keep the cars on track. Today you see them pressing a lot of buttons instead, while a vaccuum cleaner engine is in their back.

Dont want to say Alesi is a bad driver, nor do I want to say that I could do better, but in this case he missed probably a gear, so he was slowing down and the Lotus was so close behind him, he had little to no reaction time. When you see the onboards of Alesi, you see him struggle a few times with the gearbox. Again, dont want to say Alesi is a bad driver. Could have also been the gearbox itself that was not happy for some reason, like too hot oil temperature, or mechanical error.

The battle between Max and Lewis in Bahrain was pretty good, and there was a good Monaco race when Lewis was on fading tyres with Daniel trying to get past for many laps. There are still gems in modern racing.

Yeah, it seems to be a big t of a missed shift, and Werner, followed ng too close, is unable to swerve away in time, sending Alesi to the barrier. Werner seemed to be upset with how the lead battle ended. On the podium celebrations, he didn't take his step on the podium, instead, he stood behind the podium.

I watched this exact Lotus being raced by Marco Werner last year in the GP Masters series, and he also did time attack at Goodwood with it. The later Essex Lotus, Ligier, Ensigns, and the early pre-war GP and 50's sportscars are regulars all around Europe.

If they're stuck 3 seconds behind then they're not fast enough to catch the car in front, at 3 seconds the slipstream is more valuable than the loss in downforce, that's why they have 2-3 second gaps when they tow at Monza/Spa for example.

Absolutely, the first two times he went up the back of Alesi weren't enough for him to learn to leave a little space. There was no need for it in a historic gp, I reckon he just had his ego on and wanted to beat Alesi who actually made it to F1 while he never could.

umm... he ran into the back of him about a third of the way down the straight.... Werner is a former pro... the ONLY excuse you can give Werner is his lack of experience in all things F1. But to say it was inevitable is a joke, there was ample time to pull out but he wanted to ride the slipstream and probably was not aware of where the tip of his nose was given (as prev mentioned) his lack of F1 experience and the fact the nose on that car is about 1mm off the floor.

@@V8HiluxZX6R you're an idiot. They were going wheel to wheel through that corner the whole race and never even made the slightest contact. Alessi missed a gear causing him to drop a bunch of speed, not giving Werner any time to dodge

@@V8HiluxZX6R This accident happened immediately after the final corner exit. End of. Now Werner has a very clean racing record he was never penalised in his career. So therefore you can't say he did this on purpose, it's not in him clearly. So why would he do it now. And for Alesi this sums up his F1 career. Full of promise and nothing to show for it. I firmly believe that Alesi missed a gear change that's why he was so slow out of the exit. There wasn't anyway Werner could avoid the accident. So that's why I feel sorry for him. If Werner wasn't there Alesi would of lost alot of time to Werner that lap. But because Werner was there rightly or wrongly he had to be penalised because Alesi wouldn't of crashed. But the only time we saw the official's penalise a driver for knocking off an opponent this weekend was this incident. Seems like politics could involved. Full of sympathy for both drivers and it feels wrong to say its Werner's fault therefore when other drivers on Sunday got away with it. And the way he acted confirmed that he felt he didn't do it on purpose. It was a nice touch that Lyons gave his winners trophy to Werner later.

Contact was made just prior to the start of the grid slots not on the exit of the corner... there was ample time for a driver of his calibre to move out the way... I never said he did it on purpose just that a lack of experience in F1 cars of all era's may have contributed. I mean, I know the start/finish straight isn't really a straight but to say contact was made on corner exit...🤦‍♂️

@@V8HiluxZX6R I watched this thrilling battle live on tv - the Marco Werner JPS was nearly 2 seconds faster in qualifying than Jean Alessi's Ferrari however Jean blasted off at the start and took the lead at the 1st corner. Marco then spent 15 laps trying to pass Jean at every opportunity. Two of the better attempts were stopped by Jean placing his car in the right place, other Marco attempts were in places where it was impossible to pass and nearly hitting the Ferrari on several occasions - on one occasion he did hit the Ferrari. Marco appeared to get really desperate to pass Jean knowing he had a much faster car. I thought that he simply misjudged how fast he was gaining on the Ferrari as they left La Rasscase and his nose went under the Ferraris gearbox lifting the rear wheels causing them to spin up (black lines on the track) before the Ferrari slewed to the right and into the wall. I thought it was entirely Marco Werners fault and his "surprise" and being given a penalty for punting the leader off the track was amazing and then his attitude on the rostrum wasnt good. Lyons was that far behind I dont know how he thought that Marco was "the real winner". Gutted for Jean who hadnt driven that car before and was a class act.

My point is: Throughout the entire race, Marco wasn't able to follow the Ferrari on the main straight due to a lack of Cosworth power vs the Ferrari 's prancing horses. So which afterburner could Marco have ignited to all of a sudden have that much excess speed? Alesi must have had a problem - technically or human mistake.

They have to be big at least in the front for the crash structure. The width of the cars has been the same since the 90s. They have too much artificial length in the back though.

Narrower for sure...and they should decrease the width of the tires as well. Doing just these 2 things would increase the ability to race...showcasing driver prowess & allow overtaking opportunities...immensely.

The dont need to be narrower, the current cars arent much wider than 80s cars. They need to be shorter, which is what the 2022 car attempts to adress
