Balance is always more important than the best individuals. Carrick was always ignored by Sven but a natural deep positional midfielder and Hargreaves was an excellent ball winner. These types of players were essential for likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes to flourish.

Taking nothing away from Sven Goren Erickson he was a good quality manager what he achieved in serie A, other countries and there was a period before before the Brazil game in 2002 I thought the man can't do wrong but that game exposed his limitation as a England manager yes they were a special team but the way they surrendered to the Brazilians that day was concerning Erickson had no ideas, after that he twice he went out to Portugal in the same fashion he was limited despite having a generation of players for me was the second greatest collectives of players in my 35 years watching England he conned the country when he didn't leave his post after euro 2004, if he had left after the euros his legacy might of been remembered more fondly.

When you have those midfielders you drop a striker and set up a system to put all of them on the pitch in their best position. Ask Ancelotti at milan when he had rui costa seedorf pirlo rivaldo/kaka. We all know how that milan did. His englad should have been a 4141. Scholes (later carrick) deep with 2 box to box mids in front of him with lamps and stevie. With those 3 you don't need a specific destroyer in midfield. Beckham on the right and Joe Cole on the left. Up top either rooney or owen.

I have supported English National teams since I started watching them and I know its the club rivalries, scarcastic media press and more. England always lacked stable GKs and in every tournament we have seen different GKs which proves it. But looking at this team Sven has picked the best good formation for England should have been 4-2-3-1 with same back 4, Gerrard or lampard with Scholes in 2, Beckham, Owen or Rooney in the attacking middle, Gerrard or Lampard in the 3 and Rooney or Owen as the striker. This or any other players in the doubtful places from the sub would also make the team.

In that time 4-4-2 was the norm. He had to fit in his best players, which meant Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes in the midfield. Perhaps playing a 4-1-2-1-2 narrow would have been better with Beckham playing a Mezzala sort of role with scholes dictating play like a Pirlo would have been more exciting

During those times, 4-4-2 was the common formation to play, unlike the 4-3-3 formation today. It COULD have worked with a 4-3-3, with Lampard, Scholes and Gerrard as a midfield 3, and Neville and Cole as wing backs. Beckham on the right wing, and you could play either Owen or a young Rooney out wide or centre forward. At least Scholes isn’t wasted out wide!

Unpopular Opinion: But these players were not good enough to go any further in tournaments. I know the media and video games overhyped these players with insanely high stats but I always remember as a young football obbsessed fan that watched every thinking all the English players were overrated. Remember this was before the modern premier league era with Klopp, Pep and other world class managers. Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Ferdinand, Campbell were all great Premier league players but none could really handle playing in any other league other than outdated Premier League tactics. For those that watched it in 2006 Owen Hargraves of all people was the standout player in many games, most likely due to playing in the Bundesliga at the time. I don't mean to disrespect any of these players but the reality is only one team can win the world cup and other nations had incredibly good teams with incredibly good players that people can't just expect that an above average generation of England automatically entitled them to win a major tournament. Now I didn't agree with Sven's tactics but realistically even with adapted tactics those players probably couldn't beat the Italians, Germans, French, Brazilian or Argentinian teams of that era, or if they did it would require some luck. Despite their low ratings in video games I rate players like Klose and Muller far above anyone in England's "Golden Generation". Anyway I'm more excited about this generation of England, for the first time I feel the English team isn't that overrated and overhyped with players somewhat keeping their feet on the ground possibly allowing the fans and media to not put stupid unrealistic pressure on the team. My only concern is Harry Kane and a few others are becoming overrated and overhyped but that is typical England and compared to what it was in the days of Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Owen this current team at least evaluate themselves far more accurately. England need to respect other teams, celebrate their victories over them while still being respectful and not making silly songs. More or less follow the Liverpool model that Jurgen Klopp has laid out. This England generation have the benifit that the Premier League now has the best coaches in the world and within a few years after Messi retires the Premier League will likely become the best league in the world (This time for real, unlike in the 00s when people pretended the Premier League was the best but it wasn't even top 2).

Sven was playing strikers as wingers and central midfielders as strikers/wingers well before Pep. Visionary. Instead of total football of a 4-4-2, it would be more like 10-0-0.

Most people here nailed why Scholes shouldn't be on the left, though there's a few foot-in-mouth moments. Perhaps he could toe the line between being in the center and on the wing, but ultimately come crunch time you want him in the middle. Furthermore, he lacked the speed to be on the left against speedier wingers, so he would likely resort to clipping them. He always did have some bite in him, that's for sure.

If I was the England coach I definitely use 3,4,2,1 formation and I put Ash on Lwb and Garry on Rwb with Gerard and Frank on middle and Rooney with Scholsey in front and I just let them do what ever they want to go and in front Owen with Terry Carragher and Ferdinand in back . It wasn´t the formation or the player selection that was the problem, England just didn´t have the right type of players to win a big tournament. They lacked technique, and when up against the more technical teams like Portugal and Brazil, they ended up having to chase the ball too much. The best teams in the world can hold the ball when pressured, the English national teams never had the technical players to control the big games. They had other amazing players, like the powerful centerbacks, the allround center midfielders etc. But the success of the English club teams are due to a mix of great English players that lack technique and the more technical foreign players. The national team never had that important mix. But blame Sven all you want.

I don't understand the issue with Scholes on the flank. Its not like he was always a centre mid being a striker when he was younger. World class AMCs like Zidane, Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Silva, Gerrard and Pires played on the flanks when needed. Scholes could cut in for Cole to overlap.

Should have dropped scholes deep, building the play from the back with the 2 CBs during attack phase. Effectively playing 3-5-2 in attack with A Cole and G Nev as wingbacks. Instead he played scholsey on the left... facepalm.

About Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard playing together dilemma, I have a simple solution. Take out Michael Owen - who has not been playing well since leaving Liverpool and used him as substitute. And put in Lampard or Gerrard as false No. 9 or 10 since Rooney wears No. 9. Just like Spain did with Fabegras. As for holding midfielder, Michael Carrick or Gareth Barry will be most suitable since they are both in form for Man United and Aston Villa.

The longer time goes on that 'golden' generation aren't looking so golden. They each came with their flaws. They were recognised names, established premier league players, but all of them could be on the bench as well as playing. The defence is as good as England will ever have.
