crazy how even though dunk isnt fit and hes much worse than branthwaite he still gets taken over him? i like the rest of the squad but that one baffles me. also tomori not even getting a look at is outrageous.

Watch AC Milan actually play rather than riding off stats and fifa. You’d see Tomori is erratic and makes a major error every few games. There is a reason AC Milan have conceded the most goals in the league out of any of the top 10 sides.

Grealish is unique in what he offers and is more experienced. I don't disagree with you. I just agree either. I think I'd probably have opted for grealish myself. But I'd also have took Maddison and dropped one of the younger players.

I won’t miss watching Grealish do the Jack Grealish football tactics 101: 1. Receive ball on the left wing. 2. Slow to a walking pace and place ball on the outside of right boot. 3. Slowly shuffle side to side a few times each. 4. Pass ball backwards or sideways.

The depth of options have changed. If Maguire was fit he would started (he has had his best domestic season and always plays well for England) But in Midfield we now have Bellingham, Mainoo, a more experienced Gallagher and players like Wharton coming through. So we don’t need Phillips to partner Rice and Henderson for leadership. And in attack we now have Gordon, Eze and Palmer coming through so we don’t need Rashford as an option off the bench.

But in the past, Henderson was captaining a top side, Kalvin Phillips was England's player of the year and Rashford was in good form. It's like you're forgetting that they've previously been playing at a much better level than they are currently.

@@rhyschadwick3269agree if we don't progress well it will be because Southgate attempts to make up for defensive frailty rather than actually play exciting attacking football with the wealth of talent we have in them areas. Playing to England's real strengths isn't in Southgates mind.

We're going with 1 out and out holding midfielder, 2 of you want to class Wharton as a midfielder and 4 number 8's who are better at going forward than going back. So unless he plays pretty much all his centre backs and plays 2 of them out of position. And his only 2 holding midfielders he's going to have to playing attacking. I mean we're going with only 1 out and out holding midfielder.

Decent squad choices. I get Dunk but if that’s the biggest talking point then I think we have to get behind the team AND Southgate. Also Palmer has to start he’s a pure baller, the best we’ve had since Rooney and yes this includes Foden, Kane and Bellingham.

Fair play to Southgate for growing a set & almost doing what needed to be done,a lot of the old favorites have been dropped & rightly so. Personally I would've taken Grealish over Shaw who I think is a gamble,but I don't know how fit he is & readiness too play. Overall great pick & I agree with 25/26 of his choices. 😊

I’m not questioning the players, but I don’t understand why 8 defenders and 9 attacking players considering that you play 4 or 5 defenders and maximum 3 attacking players. Also there is a higher chance that defenders get suspended.

defence worries me , hope Shaw gets back for the second game. 100% would have taken Braithwaite over dunk and I don't rate Gallagher but overall it's probably the best England squad we have had for years. Just hope Southgate can get the balance of the squad right

If I was manager I’d take a gamble and only take two goalkeepers! Seems precarious but when have you ever had to use the third keeper. I can’t see who’s playing next to Stones? Dunk? Seems ominous.

Generally happy with the squad but defence looks shaky. Dunk over Branthewaite is mental and we've got very limited LB options with no chilwell & shaw's fitness. Think Southgate should've forced Holland to apologise and get Ben White back on side, he's been imperious for Arsenal this season and is both versatile and plays the dark arts with the best of them. Think we're a much weaker team without him.

Gutted that Madders isn’t on the plane. Always seems to train really well for England and plays his heart out for the shirt. Great talent. Disgraced by Dunk over Branthwaite. That defence is so shaky if we get injuries to Stones or Walker. We all know that Southgate doesn’t like Grealish, so that’s no surprise.

He’s not fit yet. He has been injured all season and still is unlikely to be fit for the first games. They are hoping he will be Match fit for the final group games/ the knockouts. With him only being in the squad because there are no other good LB options

If you watched the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium you’d see Chilwell is just not good enough. And Mitchell is a shout but tbh he’s been average for palace and rides of the form of Eze, Olise, Wharton and Mateta. Also Mitchell has only really played in a wing back- 3 back formation this season and is unproven in a 4 back where he needs to be defensively strong as well as be good on the overlap. Considering the attacking talent Southgate will play a 4 back or a 5 back with Walker as a CB and someone like Gordon playing as the LWB (to allow Trent to play wide and attacking) So it makes sense to gamble on Shaw and, if there wasn’t a 90% he’d be fit for the final group game, then Southgate would’ve brought a left footed back up

Looking at that defence I cannot see England doing anything at that tournament. I hope I am wrong but we’ve always been let down in the past. How did England not win Euro2004 will never understand it as we had such a great side. Euro2020 was our chance and we did not take it. Will always wish them well and would love them to prove me wrong. ⚽️🏴🤲🏻

International football is always a gamble and, as much as we don’t admit it, tends to be dictated by luck as much as skill. However the recent England side has shown in the last 2 major tournaments the ability to compete with the big sides. In Euro 2020 they did bottle a bit but were the stronger side in the final and lost to a classic Italian performance. And in WC2022 they only got to the quarters but they were again, arguably the better side, creating more, better chances against the favourites France. Remember it took a wonder goal and a lucky corner clearance for France to score. England should’ve taken their chances but they put arguably the strongest performance against France and definitely the best performance against Mbappe (with France being the ‘better’ team in the final) The issue is the Shaw and Magiure injuries as the Shaw - Magiure - Stones - Walker back line has always been solid. But the attack now is stronger than ever. As long as the players play well (and Southgate gets it tactically right like he did against France by getting henderson and Walker to mark Mbappe out the game there is a good chance

Honestly don't see the issue with the defence. We've never had a good defence. Our strength for the past 6 or 7years has been our attack a stregth Southgate has failed to utilise. Harry Maguire isn't good enough and tbh luke Shaw is. Nothing special defensivly. This is a good thing. Let's get another centre back in there we might never need to use Maguire ever again. Best tactic isn't to try and keep the opposition out of net but keep us in theirs. Get as many people in the pitch and in the box.

In Gareth's defence, Grealish had a very average season by his standards and doesn't deserve to go. I'm a Spurs fan and agree that Maddison doesn't warrant a place in the squad either.

Southgate is the only reason England doesn't dominate international competitions because they have exceptionally talented footballers, if not the best sqaud overall on paper, just that he seems to not understand how to bring the best out of them when it matters most. Hence, they always underperform

Gallagher kept up the pressure and defends well which grealish and maddison cant do. Also palmer didn’t have his best game but still got the first goal we needed. Maddison is overated did nothing wen he came on except lose the ball. And grealish is hit and miss and doesn’t have the determination

Decent centre back on his day but he’s been inconsistent and erratic this season and is a big reason as to why ac Milan’s defensive record has been closer to monza and Verona’s rather than juve and inter’s defensive records.

Just a ridiculous opinion to have, he’s one of the best England managers ever , his records is incredible, if not for the finest of margins he could easily have won a euros on home soil and beaten France in the World Cup (England were the better side in that game). Tournaments are so so hard to win and luck is an element and moments change things. There has been steady progress to the point that England have an insane squad with a balance of experience and youth. Southgate has helped develop this cohesiveness and changed the culture of how England play and how they approach tournaments. Better players on paper in previous generations haven’t done even nearly as well

Tbh he(Southgate) puts you to sleep when he talks. There is just no way he can motivate this group of fantastic players who are familiar with passionate innovative Managers (Guardiola, Klopp, Arteta, Unai Emery, Ancelotti) Southgate sounds like he’s in over his head which he really is. Kinda reminds me of Solsjaer when he was at Man. United.
