I waited until I finished Skyward to check out your review. I just have to say I think your points are valid! I agree that the events that happen would have made more of an emotional impact if Sanderson had spent more time creating a better bond between the students. Usually I’d be devastated but not this time... M-bot is one of my new favorite characters ever now and I too can’t wait for the next installment! Wonderful and well thought out review!

Checking in from Daniel Greene’s channel. Glad I did 💪🏼 I really enjoy this work by Sanderson. It was my first Sanderson novel and it impressed enough for me to dive into his other fantasies like the Mistborn series(which I’m really enjoying) I thought your review on Skyward is pretty spot on. While it was a fast paced and intriguing story, it wasn’t super compelling. Light world building but I think that was the point for his first YA novel. Seems like he didn’t want to take too many risks or be too bold. It was fun and to the point which I appreciated. I’m patiently waiting for the second book in the series this year.

Hope most people will appreciate the time it must've taken you to edit and complete this. Have you ever considered being a special fx film editor? Honestly, very high level of production and great review of course!

What do you think of the 1st 10 pages of the prolouge. I'm wondering because i think that's a lot of pages and would love some feedback as my prolouge is 8 to 9 pages long.

Spensa is one of those characters I just want to shake until she stops getting in her own way, but still manage to like, haha. Probably even more in book 2 than in this one. Like all the way through Book 2. I agree with you that M-Bot is absolutely the best character in this book too, haha. I also had trouble putting it down, and really loved all the action, and how clearly he described the battle scenes. So far the only Sanderson books I've read are this series and the Steelheart/Calamity series, and my impression of Sanderson is that he does absolutely incredible world building, great action/pacing/plot, but for me his characters are his weakest area, particularly the side characters. In both those series, only 2-3 characters felt rounded, and the rest just had like 4 attributes tops and were pretty 2D. (Compare to the secondary characters in The Dresden Files, for instance, for another story told in first person perspective. I guess to be fair, those are built up over several books, not just 3. I'm not really counting the Skyward Flight novellas, because those were written with a co-author, so I don't know how much is whom.) Perhaps that's deliberate given how incredibly dense Spensa is, since we only get to see people from her perspective. And then later books yank us away from the secondary cast from Skyward, and introduce another huge cast of secondary characters we barely get to know. Twice, actually. If you consider this one of his weaker books though, I'll check out the Stormlight Archive, if that's your recommended starting point.

Thanks for the review. I have a lot of thoughts on this book. I am actually someone who is not that into huge worldbuilding so I found the "smallness" of the world refreshing compared to Stormlight Archive or even Mistborn. This book was so easy to read and like you said, I flew through it (Pun intended). Addressing Spensa's early dialogue of death and destruction, I'll admit I was a little annoyed at first. But then I thought about the way she had grown up so isolated from everyone save her family and one friend and the culture of the society they lived in and it made me understand why she was the way she was and said the things she said a little more. I'd say some off the wall things as well if I grew up in a similar situation I'm sure. Her growth throughout the story was so relatable and realistic as well. I loved the descriptions of the fights and I actually felt attached to some of the flight squad besides Spensa. I also liked the tension of the book because it was high stakes pretty much right away. Anyway, just a few of my thoughts. Thanks again for this review. I can't wait for Starsight!

Skyward definitely isn't his best work, but it's honestly better than most of the other fantasy out there haha. Good review though, I pretty much agree with your analysis of the book...and YA in general ;)

This was my first Sanderson book and while it is not perfect I really really enjoyed it. Now I have read Warbreaker and The Final Empire and will continue on with Mistborn as soon as my books arrive.

I decided to get into Sanderson by reading The Wheel of Time. Needless to say, I still haven't got to his books yet.

Very fair review. I agree whole heartedly with your opinions regarding the good and the " not as good" ( Im talking to you JerkFace). I would just add that for someone who really enjoyed this story, that they might also like Tress of the Emerald Sea.

I loved reading Skyward! It’s the only book by Sanderson that I’ve read, and it really makes me want to start his other books!

I really enjoyed Skyward, probably because it was his easiest to get into quickly. It took me hours to start enjoying Elantris, Mistborn and Way of Kings, but I was hooked quickly with Skyward.

I'm on hero of ages right now. My first mistborn read through and first for Sanderson for me. Loving it so far. I have the first book of Stormlight and I have Skyward... Which should I read next?

In all fairness, I only read the free sample on Kindle, not the whole book. That first ever 10% experience of Brandon Sanderson's writing didn't light any fires with me though. Perhaps, I'm simply not the target audience OR I simply don't know great writing when I see it. Anyway, following all the rave reviews, I've bought a full copy of 'Way of Kings' now so lets see if that floats my boat.

I've read every Brandon Sanderson book and I thought that this book might be the worse book he's written. Maybe a tie with the rithmatist.. that being said, I still like the book for what it was. The stormlight archives is his best followed by the mistborn trilogy. The reckoners is a YA series by Sanderson and I thought that was much better than this book

I've tried to read the first book of the Mistborn series. Not a very good experience. I DNFed the book before even getting to the middle of the story. It was very boring for me. I thought he put the accent TOO MUCH on the worldbuildinf. I know, I know, it's important but that was putting shadow on the plot in my opinion. Maybe I'll try another time but now I am not really ready to pick up another book by Sanderson.

Using "scud" as a nickname? I thought that the word was their version of "fuck". At least, it was used in the same context as "fuck".

I do think your critique of the characters being less developed than you wanted is understandable...but is likely a result of the YAness of it. They tend to focus on the lead character first and foremost and seen through their eyes, making less room for other characters.
