Slain Mountie honoured at memorial for fallen officers

B.C. RCMP Constable Rick O'Brien was honoured yesterday at a tribute for fallen officers. He was shot and killed on the job in Coquitlam last week. Prosecutors have charged a 25-year-old man with first-degree murder. And as Claire Palmer tells us, the memorial comes during a record year for law enforcement deaths.

I feel bad about this. I also feel bad about the construction worker that was killed yesterday when he flipped over a front end loader on Cypress Mountain. Will this fellow get a big funeral on the news too? Will his colleages get a paid day off from their regular duties to attend? Nice big pension for his family? For some weird reason, some workplace deaths get more attention than others while all are equally tragic.

A job does not automatically make you a hero. Society throws around the word hero way too much. Cops are not your friends. They are not here to serve the public interest. If they want to be treated with respect, maybe they should start respecting citizens.

Still one of the safest jobs in Canada. Try logging, transportation, fishing, construction - these are far far more dangerous occupations - were is their memorial?

Wow, thank you for coming on here and adding such valuable input. If your industry doesn't honor the sacrifice of your members that not the police's fault. Maybe take some leadership and bring awareness on your own platform instead of commenting "Well what about US" on a ceremony that has nothing to do with the careers you are talking about. It comes off very insensitive. No one is saying those professions aren't dangerous or less dangerous then policing.

The public is paying for the cop's big send off and not the construction worker's. I'm refering to a fellow that was killed yesterday when his machine flipped over and crushed him.
