Slavoj Zizek, in this video, gives numerous examples and illustrations of how Hegel and Freud;s philosophy depend upon the conception of nothingness or absence as a thing as such, with properties and differing types. Applied tot he mindset we have towards our lives, this proves insightful- "there's coffee without milk, and then there's coffee without cream."

I'm not a huge fan of Zizek, but I respect his readings of Freud and Hegel and how articulately he makes his points.

I knew a guy who lost his young daughter. He got himself a pet rat, called it "my little girl" - but he never made the conscious connection between the animal and the lost little girl

This is really really good. That stuff on fetishes and hamsters is outstanding.

I love the way that he weaves such far-flung things into a brilliant narrative. Fetishes, hamsters, the dog in the night time...

I was struggling with understanding the application of "coffee without cream vs coffee without milk" in less absurd situations. For example, let's say "you should exercise because you become stronger and can defend against attackers" has a different ring to it than "you should exercise because you will live longer and be useful member of society rather than a burden". Both of them are valid scientifically but depending on the context, one is more useful than the other. The first example is more valuable in a society of no laws the other is more valuable in a society where people care. Yet, people don't do the exercising.

Interesting angle. One analogy which occurred to me is that coffee without cream vs. coffee without milk is like the empty spaces used in music. Sometimes slotting an empty space into music creates a feeling of satisfaction (like in the outro for Joy Division's song Kamakino), and sometimes it creates a feeling of tension (like in AC/DC's song Baby Please Don't Go), depending on the notes which come before and after it.

@@benthebenevolent1001 yeah, I was thinking about connecting this to real life situations not just abstract aesthetic considerations. Music is a reflection of the patterns of existence so it's useful to put these thoughts in the context of human daily activity.

Terrible point to interrupt the talk. How do I hit the hamster??
@ddavila3

He already explained how to hit the hamster. The man in the earlier story didn’t realize the hamster was a sort of metaphor for his dead wife and him not accepting that she was gone. The hamster in that scenario hit him directly by dying and forcing the hit to psyche. The way you hit the hamster is you point it out and get them (the other) to consider its significance on their own / make the connection that they may be not accepting the full picture. Maybe don’t though do to another what you wouldn’t want done to you. Maybe hit yourself at your own hamster first and after that pain see if you still want to do it to another.

Its all about "Übersprungshandlung" (displacement activity) und "Ersatzbefriedigung" (compensatory satisfaction) underlying always is inability to deal with things and events the way these are presented. Too many concepts , too much neuronal brain capacity in human skulls Zizek an outstanding category of its own 🏆
