cram divad except slayer isn't groove metal. groove metal didn't exist back when this album came out. Slayer is what you would refer to as Trash Metal because they were the only other band besides Megadeth to ever give Metallica any type of competition, Personally I think Slayer is WAY better then Metallica. I know you didn't say that slayer is Groove metal lol But I just wanted to put that out there lol.

I love how the intro is quieter, as if to trick people into turning up their speakers then it proper kicks in. I can imagine that bit blew people away back when this first came out

The reason why the intro is quieter is to resemble the sound of chemical warfare ending, this is the continuation to chemical warfare, that outro riff is the intro to ghosts of war.

I went to see Slayer on the South of Heaven tour in 1989 and Motorhead and Overkill were the support acts. They played at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA right outside of Philadelphia, PA. I remember going and hoping that they would play this song live....and surprise......they did play Ghosts of War. It truly made my night. Great song and great memories.

The production on this album is something unreal. Somehow they captured the perfect balance between ALL of the instruments. They made it sound bigger than life but somehow still minimal. It sounds raw and trashy while sounding refined and tight. In regards to this track, one of the wickedest solos in the speed metal world .

Funny how no one mentioned the talent of RICK RUBIN as the producer of this and other Slayer albums... his small, half hidden brilliant ideas on how to make everything sound even more interesting and exciting... a good producer is often an unofficial band member, a man in the shadow doing what he does best, too often underrated, unknown to the large masses of music consumers

Long before drum triggers Dave Lombardo was keeping it real out here with organic sense of timing. He is one of those rare drummers who can allow himself to speed up or slow down and let his parts kind of breathe and flex throughout the song but still makes things line up at the end of each measure

A lot of people thought that this album sucked because they slowed the tempo. For me, this and Master of Puppets are the best metal albums ever made. Lombardo's drums on this are brutal.

I was 15 in 1988 when this came out. My family went to Scotland on vacation that summer and I remember jamming out to this on my Sony Walkman (look it up, kids) on the train in the highlands. Fantastic memories, and a fantastic album.

The Shorty’s skateboard video back in the 90s is what first turned me onto slayer. I was prob in 7th grade when that skate vid came out, bought it, then saw this hard skate scene start, a dude slamming down a steep rail grind with ghosts of war playing. That’s how my slayer fandom started two decades+ ago, watching the shortys skate vid 🤙🤘
