The Slayers Anime Review
The misadventures of Lina Inverse and friends is one of the most legendary stories to be ever told in Anime history. Along with Gaury, Zelgadas, Xelos and other characters, 90s anime wouldn't be the same without the legacy of this series.
Swords and Sorcery is a staple when you told about classic anime or retro anime, but Slayers was made to be a parody of that.
It took from the likes of shows like Record of Lodoss war or Magic Knight Rayearth, and set the stage for later series like Gokudo and Rune Soldier Louie.
Starting off as a light novel in the late 80s, the Slayers anime would debut in 1995 with Slayers, come back in 1996 with Slayers Next, and then close off with Slayers Try.
It sparked 5 movies 2 OVAs throughout the run including Slayers the Motion Picture also known as Slayers Perfect, Slayers Book of Spells, Slayers Return, Slayers Great, Slayers Excellent, Slayers Gorgeous, and finally Slayers Premium.
Finally, J.C Staff would come back one more time in 2008 and 2009 with Slayers Revolution and Evolution - R.
This is certainly a classic anime series, and it's recommend everyone to check it out!

Slayers was the first anime I ever watched as a child, even before I ever watched sailor moon and pokemon back in the early 90s, and I'm forever grateful it was. As a young girl, I got an extremely early impression of what an actual strong and likeable female main character was (her and Xena). And I'm so happy to see so many people having the same opinion. It's always such a blast from the past to see slayers videos pop up on KZfaq, thanks so much for this. ❤️

Slayers was a favorite of mine back when. I lost interest in anime before the 4th and 5th seasons came out. If I ever got back into anime, a rewatch would be on my list. Thank you for letting me know they existed. Give a Reason is still one of my favorite anime songs.

I agree. Slayers Next was probably the most dramatic of them all and the climax was the best when the final boss was revealed and even better how Lina defeated him. It was completely unexpected. But my personal favorite is Slayers Try because it introduced a whole new concept of another dimension and a beauty of exploring the world. As a child, it peaked my interest for adventures and made me start writing my own fictional novel based on this series.

Some long time in the past, I read something somebody wrote: the best parodies are those that are simultaneously a good example of what they’re poking fun at. Slayers is just that in my opinion: a solid fantasy adventure series that makes fun of fantasy tropes while being a good fantasy series in itself.

Just an FYI: The Slayers light novel series started publishing in January 1990 after serialization in 1989. The Magic Knight Rayearth manga started in November 1993. While yes, the anime does predate the Slayers anime by a few months, Rayearth as a whole started four years after Slayers began serialization. Also, way to ignore Amelia. You know, someone who was in most of the series. You can’t talk about Lina, Gourry and Zelgadis without talking about Amelia. She was extremely important to the cast, and her family was the catalyst for the events in the first part of Next and in Revolution. Justice for Amelia!

It’s funny you say that, because the anime introduces Amelia early. If they stuck closer to the novels, she wouldn’t show up until Slayers Next.

This was one of the best fantasy anime I ever watched. The soundtrack is an OMG. Slayers was incredible. Slayers Next for me was the best.

At 16 years old at Nekocon 1999, I met Lisa Ortiz, Lina's English voice actress... and later that day happenstanced into hanging out with her for a while. She is one of the most genuine and friendly people I have ever met. My 16 year old brain was completely fried from the experience lol, I have a 30 year old hot take, while Megumi Hayashibara is the original Lina, I feel that Lisa Ortiz's firey voice acting fits the character much better, and I will always associate her with Lina Inverse.

I honestly thought slayers try was the best season I watched slayers during the beginning of of the covid pandemic and it quickly became one of my favourites after rewatching it recently It became my favourite anime of all time it’s really good and I really enjoyed it

Yeah I feel like try was pretty solid, and I see why someone would like it the most. The tone is slightly different from the other two seasons.

Glad to see another person cover slayers. I enjoy this anime a lot it's a favorite. I enjoy every season to different degrees of course but on the whole I can't complain. I'm glad they made more. I hope they keep making more though I don't know if the odds are high.

can't do the same thing all the time or getting old but, every now and then It's good to bring it back, slayers rises from the ashes, Lina Inverse be Ally / Partner / Lover of Ash Williams 20 yeears old (Army of darkness)

I watched the 3 OG series during the start of the pandemic - It was a good comfort during that weird and scary time. Next is by far my favorite series. Try was just not as good imo - the story wasn't as tight to me and I could tell it wasn't based on any of the novels. (Even though it had a very cool initial concept with the borders between regions being broken down by Lina's actions at the end of Next.) I did love all the great 4th wall breaks and other clever touches. It's such a good show overall and I definitely recommend it. Great 90s bangers too.

For rpg and fantasy fans all the things connected to shamanism, spiritualism etx aren't that complicated nowadays, also thanks to games, movies etx ;) ALSO it is worth to mention that Slayers franchise is still popular in Japan and for example the last novel - volume 17 had really good sales :)

Unpopular opinion: I much prefer Cynthia Martinez' voice work for Lina Inverse than Lisa Ortiz. I just found Ortiz' voice more kiddy and less angry than I thought for the character of Lina, and her inflections left much to be desired. Little voice range, a problem many of the early anime voice acting had back in the day. And she didn't exactly improve much in Revolution either. Martinez on the other hand sounded more raspy and feisty, like she was always two seconds away from getting pissed off all the time, and she gave Lina much more emotion with her vocal range. It may have been the aid from the OVA's and Movie's animation compared to the TV series that helped, but she just felt more suited to Lina's character to me than Ortiz. I even found myself watching the series in Japanese and imagining Martinez voice work as well. That's not to say the others were bad of course. Crispin Freeman practically made Zelgadis and vice versa, and Veronica Taylor was (pardon the pun) tailor-made for Amelia. Gourry I could take or leave; it's hard separating his voice from Brock.

Ah, a fellow appreciator of Try. It’s also the best season in my opinion, at least the classic ones. The last stretch of Next is better, but as a whole I like Try better.

At 5:15, you left out Masami Okui who also sung the opening and ending themes of season 1 with Hayashibara. She too is a great singer.

I watched everything related to slayers including all movies and 2 ova and nothing struck me as less then great and phenomenal just hearing "megumi hayashibara" play "Lina Inverse" is music to the ears.

I'm a bit bias on how to view the slayers, but when you said that the slayers was the go to for people for the blades and sorcery nich it was so true. The slayers hit some part of me that really drove into me. Funny enough I found a vhs tape of the slayers try at a local yard sale a few years before 2018 and didn't know what it was. I didn't look much into at the time but about a year ago I decided to look into it some more because I dug the vhs out of a box in my closet. It led down a rabbit hole and now I have the whole tv series except the ovas and movies on both DVD and vhs. This anime is an absolute classic to those who nich was blade and sourcey. This was an awesome and simple overview the series. Thanks for making it. To be honest the slayers movies where very wired they had this odd sureal vibe to them.

Absolutlely love Slayers. It isnt the best series out there but it has a lot of charm and Lina is a pretty big debate for my favorite female protagonist in anything.

Minor clarification about the fun fact at 7:07 - the official game Warcraft 3 doesn't have a character named Lina, but one of the most popular fan-made custom maps for the game (DotA) does. Then, that custom map turned into a standalone game (Dota 2) where that character continues to be named Lina with attacks named after "Dragon Slave" and ""Laguna Blade".

Lots of memorable anime's in the 90's. Slayers, saber marionette, escaflowne, bebop, sorceress hunters, tenchi muyo, ghost fighter, zenki. The anime aesthetics is a lot different from today. I feel anime has lost it's charm for some reason. Too serious, too edgy.

I honestly enjoyed try and hated revo/evo and I am not the only one many people like have found revo and evo boring and stupid and also lina was so unlikable in those seasons they just exaggerated flaws, amelia was boring, gourry much more stupid, xellos annoying. Try for me was a good season and has the same vibe as the other but I still enjoyed your video
