The fill number, indicates how the down will loft. So you will need more down at 650 fill to achieve the same warmth as 850 fill. A sleeping bag of 850 fill will make the sleeping bag lighter and more compressible than a sleeping bag of 650 fill with the same temperature rating. Unfortunately I life in a damp county, and the down collapses after just a few hours due to the damp in the atmosphere, and wake up cold even with a good bag of 850 fill. So I opted for Climashield apex synthetic insulation, and is surprisingly good, and is equally compact with a long dissipation rate, so I wake up still warm. I was taught a long time ago in the USAF survival schools to always place something warm at your heart due to the fact that ALL blood travels from there throughout your body. I guess why they have those big Ronson/Zippo lighters in the sporting good section. Used and tried and it works pretty good as we sorta had to be in stealth mode. Just an option. The Answer to all my Cold camping problems was a small Parabolic heater, turns the tent into a Oven in 1min. fleecy liner. Rubber hot bottle won,t leak. Wear a small light down jacket jf really cold. fleecy pants. Fleecy socks and hat. Good -10 sleeping bag. Parabolic heat number 1.

An ingenious idea I recently heard is to place your air pad inside of a synthetic rectangular sleeping bag.

It's not that cold where I'm from, if I were to sleep in a temperature of 59°F would I still need those 3 layers below the sleeping bag?

I am always concerned that my inflatable sleeping pad will be punctured. I love how small it packs away. Any pointers to make this less of a concern? Do you prefer a foam pad or inflatable?

I've used a water bottle trick at extremely cold temperatures and I've never once had it leak. 😅

Any solution for the face? I don't know why, but with a good sleeping bag, nice pad, thermal wear and hat, I can't sleep because my throat starts to pain from the cold air.

Just throw some hand warmers in your sleeping bag to stay comfy all night long.

Can I heat up rocks at the fire and put in my socks and then in my sleeping bag to stay warm?

Get a 1.5 liter plastic bottle with a wide botleneck, saves you from leaving your sleeping bag to pee and will keep on warming your frozen feet. Make sure it's closed tight, will give you no problem then.

maybe use that extra bottle for water, say a small one, to pee in, and stick it under your armpit or at the toe end for the next hour or so, to bring a bit of warmth, and you don't have to get completely out of you sleeping bag. Also, be very careful of eating snow, just don't. Instead, if you can pee, collect it all, except a bit in the beginning and in the end, and just drink it. It's warm, have minerals and is absolutely okay, if need be. Stick the boots in the footbox and prevent them from getting frozen solid next morning. Maybe roll out your compressed survival bag (thin metalised plastic) and stuff the sleeping bag in that. Prevents it from getting dew, frost, snow and rain, and saves more heat for yourself. Just get a good one in advance and try it in advance, so you know it won't brak after one night, or just by the mere touch to it. Test the repair kit for the airmat in frosty weather in advance, so you know it really works. Same goes for that tent repair kit that came with the tent many years ago, it may have hardened over time, so get another repair kit. I carry one small foldable knife, that is one hand operated, if I would be wounded, trapped or otherwise hintred. It has a wobbly edge so cuts right through rope, semi hard ice and much other stuff. Maybe you could make an update on how to survive if really cold, making breathing holes to heat up air, when in the sleeping bag, looking for good places to sleep, dead branches etc. That would be a good supplement to this video. Some air pads are split in two halves, keeping your body heat in the upper, and reflecting the cold from the ground downwards. That would have to be above the plastic mat you show in the video. and it would be less of a chance of puncturing it. It seems like some air mats can actually pop their weldings, if they go too cold. So better get a good R-value (real one, not advertised), and test it beforehand. Also, I am not into extremely light gear, as it seems to bring a lot of sacrifices, for example a too short air mat that just lets your feet go really wet/cold, just to save 50 grams. I didn't the smart in that. I would stake the lower mat, and strap the air mat in bad weather, to prevent it from flying away, or create a sort of wall around it if possible. glad i saw this. No more using 3 blankets with any sleeping bag to stay warm. Ill just use four blankets and wont need a sleeping bag.
