Today I visited Julian Lara of Lara Farms. He takes us though everything a person should consider before planting a fruit tree. Our climate supports tropical fruit but most of what we discussed applies to any kind of fruit bearing tree.
Julian sells his trees and fruit at: larafarmsmiami.com
I also sell avocados and mangos at: www.guacfarm.com

Past two weeks ive order mangoes from these two farms. Lara farms has the best mangoes on the planet. The terp profiles make the mangoes aphrodisiacs. I was amazed how the francis hargrave mango leaves us smelling like perfume. Gauc farm has decent mangoes for the price. Highly recommend sampling their mangoes, my family loves them.

@@SleepyLizard As long as I can get it to survive indoors over the winter, I think it should be smooth sailing. The summers where I live are very good conditions for citrus, very hot and sunny, and it’s grafted onto dwarf rootstock so it’s meant for container growing. @@SleepyLizard Greetings from Europe, Estonia. By USDA zones standards Estonia is in zone 6 to 5. So No year long growing tropical trees here. However, just recently I acquired a Satsuma mandarin, Sanguinelly blood orange and Osteen mango. Doing the same thing, @OliviaLovesPugs does. The trees stay outside from June to September. The Saunguinelly has been blooming for a month now and hopefully we get a first test of home grown blood orange in the beginning of winter. Btw, the smell of that blood orange blooming is probably the most intense smelling flower I have ever experienced. It smells like a perfume shop.

I only grow fruit trees in pots because my garden got covered in cement to build a rain proof house for hydroponics. So i can only grow in pots now. I have about 40 trees currently but used to have over 100 trees in pots 2 years ago. I live in malaysia so theres many fruits we cant grow like you can in North America cause its hot the whole year with zero chill hours but I don’t follow the rules and grow blueberries, raspberry, blackberries, oranges, grapes, and alot of local tropical fruit. Somehow my blueberries bushes are fruiting with zero chill hours and the berries taste better than store bought ones. Want to get a russel avocado soon!

people shouldnt really be decieved that they cant grow their favorite fruit in their hardiness zone. Hardiness zones were created for commercial farms and not for backyard growers. Ive seen people having date palms, avocados and bananas here in zone 6 and they produced good tasting fruit. They were usually covered in polystyrene boxes during winter because sometimes it can get really cold during the winter months. I myself might try putting citrus and banana into the ground here, altough i still have a lot of planning to do.

Its minus 5 degrees.... my one little avocado tree is still going but there has been carnage for the rest. Black, dry and frozen are words that should never be used to describe an avocado fledgling. Tom... can you please re-do that zoning chart? It needs to have elements like humidity etc separate so people in other countries.. Australia perhaps lol can take elements and create a zoning profile for anywhere. Currently is not possible to translate US zones to anywhere else. Yes we have our own but cant compare to yours. If it was made up of pieces to put together it would be universal.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
that is an excellent suggestion. Maybe take the hardiness zones and list their min/max temps and other characteristics and distinguish one from the next. A little tip if you can do it...try running your sprinkler all night if it's dipping below freezing, the relatively warmer water will keep your tree above freezing...unless you have to pay a lot for water that is...around here we all have wells
