In 2000, the World Health Organization stated that depression had reached epidemic proportions: 350 million people are concerned by this leading cause of disability worldwide, which may affect 50% of the people on earth during their lifetime.
Today, it seems absolutely necessary to look into this contemporary curse, with a fresh approach. What if we stopped reducing depression to a strictly individual phenomenon? What about searching the collective causes to such profound distress?

Depression at its worst is terrifying. It’s like you can see it happening to yourself but you can’t stop it. Your stomach can be in knots of dread and despair and It can go on for months or longer. It will scare you if you have it bad. You may have insomnia too so can’t even escape through sleep. If you are reading this and have experienced it you will know how it can be

And clinical depression is something that I would not wished to my worst enemy. It cut you from life, from reality, negative thoughts are running all day all night even without a reason. Your body is hurting, head spinning and you can’t really move. It is like you are in other body and not yours. This is depression. And sadness and grief are something else.

It is because of way of life. Burnouts on work, at home, tehnology, we are bombed with a bad news everyday all day on tv, social media..we are diconnected from real life, people, nature. And all this had led to depression the whole world. It is epidemic and the only way we can beat this is that we bring our self to “factory settings”. And this is so hard in this consuming capitalistic world

Clinical depression is the result of our overactive stress response exhausting our capacity to produce and release serotonin and dopamine, both of which are released in the stress response. So, more stress, more depression. Questions?

It's much more deeper than that. You can be stressed and feel happy and fullfiled because you're working towards something purposeful. What people need nowadays is not really less stress, it is a meaningful purpose for living. But I agree with the fact that constant stress is what detracts people to pursue a purpose

@@kulaykulayyyy I'm not a medical professional, but I have worked in the medical field and also have depression since CV 2020 as most of us have. When one is stressed or exerts a more emotional response to stimuli that produces stress, their bodies produce cortisol, which is coined the stress hormone. Cortisol, in healthy levels is beneficial as it can regulate memory/cognition, improve your immune system and lower sensitivity to pain. However, excess levels of cortisol are often found in patients with depression. The initial comment has validity in that excess levels of cortisol can falter/offset the effects of dopamine/seratonin and homeostasis. A great article to read on is "Beware High Levels of Cortisol, the Stress Hormone" by Premier Health.
@kWYQ1337
@kWYQ1337 5 ай бұрын
@soulofexistence, Agreed. Stress often carries a negative connotation, but as you implied, there is also a good stress. In a flight or fight response, our bodies produce cortisol (the stress hormone). In one's everyday life, the stress (life events, obstacles, career, finances, etc) that isn't taken action on, may lead those to ponder more about the stress itself than taking action, which could lead to depression. However, the good stress (the same stimuli as above), could be one to conquer and take control of, which is gratifying and fulfilling to overcome. I've seen both instances. The key distinction is how we deal with our stresses and identifying what is our purpose.

If you look across the board at statistics. Things have got better in every way. Not worse….. It’s the way you’re framing it. What’s wrong is always available. So it what’s right We haven’t had a world war in how long…. They’ve measured the babies. They all came out highly stressed. Imagine thinking you’ll be done that day. No food. Do you run. Is your brother coming back. What if they invade. We live in a tame world. What’s going on is the abundance of materialistic goods along with comparison. . A king would have waged a global war to have a car / fridge / computer / toilet / tv …. Things we have in abundance is things even kings never had being the wealthiest in the world !
@gabrielasupernova4611
@gabrielasupernova4611 5 күн бұрын
@@ssing7113 we haven’t had a world war for a long time, true. But OVERALL, world conditions have gone from bad to worse. Just look at the environment; our oceans are garbage dumps, and in the pacific there is a growing garbage dump which is literally bigger than some countries. Global warming is something that we have today that wasn’t an issue 30 years ago. Forests are being cleared in the Amazon at the expense of precious resources including rare plants and animals. The Amazon is often called the lungs of the earth because it is so vast the oxygen the huge forest emits literally affects the whole earth. Coral reefs are dying as well, due again to man’s ruining the earth. And I live in Southern California and I have literally seen conditions go from bad to worse in the last 30 years. Nowadays we’ve got working people, people who have as many as 3 jobs living homeless on the streets. I can remember literally just maybe as recently as 12 years ago you would never see Los Angeles having homeless camps set up on sidewalks for miles and miles on both sides of the street. And the moral values of people are also at an all time low. People who desire to live by bible principles are often viewed as old fashioned. And even though there aren’t any world wars at the moment, how can we ignore Russia attacking Ukraine while 1000s of innocent people including tiny children are being slaughtered? And what about Palestine warring against Israel?? So I will say it again, there are definitely reasons to be depressed.
@gabrielasupernova4611
@gabrielasupernova4611 5 күн бұрын
And one more thing. The cost of living, which I mentioned about homelessness. The dollar buys so much less now than it ever has. Cost of living is literally impossible in Southern California. I know that’s not the whole world, but no matter where a person goes on this planet, each place has its difficulties. People have a super hard time saving anything at all for their retirement. It wasn’t like that several decades ago. So it’s worse now than ever.

Loneliness. Some may choose it, but most of us don't. I crave for deep connection with someone,having "best friends", having someone who loves me, to plan about future with. I have no motivation because I don't know what to work hard for. Money, house, car trip? So? I don't feel like I can enjoy those without people to laugh with. I don't appreciate loneliness, I just do not have any choice but live with it. Friends have their own small family, life, siblings to. The day I can manage to find someone to "chat" with, nothing deep, but at least I talked with a Human.The hardest is the night, when people are surrounded by family, children, their loved one or talking on phone with their good friends. Me, 28,alone in my room without anyone to call, no one to talk to, share my day with. I have a boring person, no conversation, objectively and subjectively not attractive, i have a malformed face so.... no money to work on my teeth that i distroyed during a dark period of my life when i didn't take care of me, was planning to end everything so... But yeah! I'm still here! with my loneliness and depression...
