The Queen’s Hamlet is a palace disguised as a peasant’s cottage hidden in the Versailles gardens. A romantic hide-away, Marie-Antoinette conceived it as a reminder of her carefree youth in Vienna. The Revolution left it for a ruin. 230 after its construction, it reopens to the public, restored to its original glory, as an extraordinary jewel of Versailles.

It should be preserved and maybe open up to the public like a museum

It is a museum. It is open to the public. It is part of the Palace of Versailles's estate.

The Royals lived such insulated lives they had no real concept of ordinary people’s lives and struggles to survive. I find it interesting that Marie Antoinette craved for what the majority of humans want~ a quiet life in the countryside.

Happiness was stolen from her the moment she was born the Archduchess of Austria to the ever critical and overbearing mother, Empress Maria Theresa. Imagine every happiness you ever found being snuffed out, replaced by what your mother thought was best for Austria. Imagine being forced to live the life others chose for you in a fashion that they chose. Happiness, and eventually her life, were both stolen from her.

it is very unfortunate that her life was not hers. however, you must be aware that royal princesses had a duty to marry whom their royal mother, an Empress and Queen decided who to marry for dynastic and political advantage to a royal House- House of Hapsburg. An archduchess like Maria Antonia was bound by etiqutte and royal duties expected of them. it was immutable.

I would love to see more about the Hamlet's restoration. I was there about 15 years ago and had no idea it was in such poor condition.

France was bankrupt from the American revolution and had been suffering severe crop failures. The Queen's expenses were miniscule compared to that.

@@steveniswho9254France was bankrupt much earlier starting with Louis XIV with building of Versailles and then with Louis XV and his constant wars. Poor Louis XVI was too timid and changing his mind constantly. Charles X, Louis XVI younger brother who had finally become king was the better choice but due to the French succession could not be the king. More complicated than this but life is complicated even for royalty.

Amazing she couldn’t be satisfied with the opulence of Versailles. No she had to spend money building a hamlet as well as her own living quarters Trianon Palace where she destroyed Louis XIV’s botanical gardens to create her own vision of what her gardens should be. No wonder the starving French people hated her! Simple case of her wanting more, more, more and in the end it was way too much!!!!
