Slick Road Tires On A Mountain Bike

If you have 27.5 mountain bike wheels, and you want to put some slick road tires on them, you can do it. In this video I show you which slick road tires are available for 27.5 inch mountain bike wheels. If you have 26 inch wheels, there are a lot more options, but there are still some good tires available for the street if you have a 26 or 27.5 inch mountain bike. If you want to run high-pressure slick tires on your mountain bike, you can do it. I put 27.5 x 1.95 WTB Thickslick tyres on my 27.5 inch mountain bike wheels, and it rolls a lot easier and goes faster with the new road tires than it did on knobby tires.
This is where I got the slick tires I put on my bike.

It works OK on hard packed dirt. Things can get a little slippery and loose dirt or sand because there are no knobs. It has a lot of surface area, so you still have some traction on the dirt. The best thing is how fast these things are on pavement.

I need something with lower rolling resistance, good speed and puncture resistance... I was thinking of going for more city friendly tyres... That’s a good question. I have the Big Apple tires on one of my other bikes, and they are lower profile, which means they’re probably a little bit lighter and faster. I like the look of the thick slick tires on my mountain bike better, because I think a mountain bike looks better with fat tires on it. With either one, you can go pretty fast and it’s a smooth ride, and you’re not likely to have a flat tire. There’s a link to where to buy the ThickSlicks in the description.

I rode with some friends over the weekend on my MTB, and both of them have almost road Hybrids with high pressure skinny tires on them. I basically got made fun of because I wasn't keeping up on my 2.25" knobby tired MTB as if I was out of shape. While I AM out of cardio shape, I've been lifting consistently for 2 years now and am pretty stong, but I was once a 500 mile per week road cyclist in near pro level shape, it's just been a couple decades since then, haha. I did get back in cycling shape maybe 5 years ago, and even raced. That being said, I placed an order for some Michelin Protek Cross 32mm tires and tubes for my 29er MTB, and a Brooks saddle which I've always wanted to try. We'll see how it goes now. I have a road bike, but they wouldn't stand a chance then, haha.

I recently had my MTBs overhauled. For tires, I wanted the Continental Town & Country tires. It's road biased tire that can do mild off-road work. Bike cops also like and use the T&C. There was only one problem: the T&C is no longer made! My LBS suggested Continental Contact Plus City tires instead, as he thought that they were most similar to the old T&C. I LIKE 'EM! They're well suited to the riding I now do; I ride mostly street, bike paths, canal trails, and the occasional, inviting grass meadow. While my Contis aren't slicks, they're road definitely biased. They're well suited to the riding I do, i.e. mostly on-road riding with a little mild off-road riding thrown in. So yeah, why run an off-road tire if you don't go off-road?
@hoohoohoblin

I really like the puncture resistance on some of the newer e-bike tires. I ran over a nail with one of my ebikes, and didn’t have a flat. Did you notice speed increase on the road after changing to those tires?
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely, especially when they’re pumped up to 65 psi. They roll a lot faster without all those knobs, and the extra air pressure reduces rolling resistance as well. I can average about 15 miles an hour for 30 minutes on the bike path, which is faster than I could do with mountain tires.

I can average 13 miles an hour on a 30 mile ride on the Thickslicks. If I go as fast as I can on the beach bike path for 30 minutes, I can average 15 miles an hour. It really depends on how much fitter you are than me though.

I may have decent options for 26 by 1.95s. None I see are in best lists. Unless I can fit a 1.75 without issues. Some people claiming lots of experience say fit exact size only. So, I'm not sure how to feel about them until I get them. I hope they last longer than 1k miles on pavement. The, what look like crossover, tires my ride came with look like they might hit 1k in the rear and go beyond 2k in the front.

@@hoohoohoblin I finally bought a Schwalbe Marathon Plus 2" from a bike shop after the owner told me all widths for most diameters fit. Just pick what's closest. Rides smooth and fast. Didn't realize the tires were so much responsible for the bad experience on some rough surfaces. The originals just didn't deal with it well. I put it on the back and photographed the odometer. Will see how long it lasts. The advertised rating might be "up to" meaning what you can best expect from it on the front.

That’s a good question. I didn’t compare them on concrete, so I can’t be sure. I did race my mountain bike against my road bike on the same course and found that I was 2 1/2 miles an hour faster on the road bike. Another way to make your mountain bike faster is to put more air in the tires, even if it has Knobby tires. More air pressure means it will roll faster.
