Pulled an inner CV on a 2005 Accord V6 coupe passenger using this method after attempting prying for hours and having the car on jack stands for a week. Took 3 tugs, not too much force needed, the prying wasn't working to well as the passenger inner has a space inbetween the end of the connecting joint and the outer axle. Did more damage to my exhaust mounts than prying on the inner cv in this case I would def recommend picking up a slide hammer+ this tool or an actual CV axle pulling y fork you can all get on Amazon/ ebay. Thanks Brian for the help 5 years later and this video is still doing its job :)

Thanks Brian, Always enjoy your videos - you've saved me hours of labor on my cars. When faced with a similar issue in the past, I drilled a hole in the old axle boot which was stuck in the trans. I then attached a chain and weight to the end and gave a yank. As the chain snaps taught, it pulls the old axle right out. The old axle is trashed anyway no harm in drilling a hole in it. Thanks again for the videos.

Brian, really like your videos. Straight to the point no bs. Also entertaining . Came across this video and the tool really works. Well I modified it a little. I had a small dent puller and luckily the threads went right into my vice grip.. the threads were not long enough so I filled in the gap with a small round piece of metal. I tried to get out cv cup for over 2 hours made the tool and in 5 seconds right out no problem. Thanks.

Great video. You saved me so much time. It started out as a couple hour project on my Accord and itturned into a 3 day project. I wish I had watched this video sooner. The principles are solid! I had a much smaller pair of vice grips laying around (I would've bought a bigger pair, but I wanted to see if I could make it work with the pair I had). I went to AutoZone (many parts stores have them) and got the slide hammer rental (free). Then I went to Lowe's and bought a threaded rod (bring in your vice grips to fit them - mine was maybe 1/4" and it worked), a washer and a nut. I spent $3 using your method. I can only imagine how much more a shop would have charged for "broken cv joint removal labor." Mine was not nearly as beefy as yours and it worked in 2 bites (once the vice grips were properly affixed). I did not weld anything. Thanks again!

Brian--many thanks! You're a life-saver! Just getting into tinkering with auto repairs--first CV joint (Corolla) and everything came to a screeching halt when the inner joint wouldn't pop out. Saw your video, bought a slide hammer after finding out it had an adapter that fit my vice-grips and did what you did and it came out on the second try. Thanks a bunch!!

Thanks a million briansmobile1- this video was 5 years ago and still getting back yard mechs out of very bad jams. Almost had no car for work tomorrow. Used your vid and it worked in 2 minutes. About the adapter - I couldn't find one in stores anywhere - automotive, hardware stores - if anyone did have one it was probably part of a set that cost hundreds. I didn't have time to wait to order online - so I made my own adapter at a local plumbing store. I used a 3/8" x 1/4" reducer that is normally used for pipe fitting (3/8" goes on the slide hammer). I then put an open ended M12-1.75 rod that screws into the adapter (1/4" side) and the other side screwed into the vise grips (hence needing an open ended rod). It probably isn't as sturdy as the custom made adapter in the video, but it did the trick and the CV axle popped right out, and it only cost $5 bucks. Autozone rents the slide hammer for free but no adapter. My contraption: i67.tinypic.com/23iuqn6.jpg Parts used (but actually bought at my plumbing store): www.walmart.com/ip/M20220.120.1000-Threaded-Rod-Plain-M12-x-1.75mmx1m/44949634?reviews_limit=10& www.amazon.com/Mueller-521-321BG-Black-Reducing-Coupling/dp/B00FX9KRFQ

Great Help, I had a problem on my Dodge Van, Cut down the shaft on my dent puller, re-threaded the 7/16 shaft, screwed into the vise grip, gave it one yank and the 2 hours wasted last night, was solved in one second. Thanks for your video, you saved the day.

I just did this on my 94 RED Celica GT!.....I tried every tool and hammer but there is little room to grip the bell or swing the hammer. Finally found that a crowbar with the curved end and nailpuller fit the bell and you can strike the curve with a BFH....and POP! it came free.....I have got to make a tool like your slidehammer-grip, great idea!

Could not get the passenger side off my 2005 Honda Odyssey. I spent 6 hours trying to find a way to get it out. Turns AutoZone loans a tool (for free) that is like the letter "C" that slips around the back of the cup and attaches to a slide hammer. Did in 1 minute what I could not in 6 hours, got the damn thing out. I was desperate bro. If I hadn't found the other tool I would have definitely tried this. Going to keep it in the memory bank for the next time I need a grabby slide hammer thingy. Good job man.

@xwmmyster I generally don't repair them any more. Usually if a boot fails and is caught before it splits full round you can do them with successful result. Otherwise the double threat of lubrication loss and inclusions of dust and dirt cause irreparable decline in the balls and races. Once initiated the decline continues with or without a proper boot on.

i made one (before i saw this) with the standard large size vise grips and a slide hammer type dent puller from auto parts store. it threaded straight into the vice grips. i had to put a spacer in the threaded area of vicegrips because my threads on the dent puller were only an inch or so long. i used an old valve core from a laen mower tire that was laying on the ground. then some duck tape (only 1.5 wraps) to keep the vicr grips together. 4-5 hard whacks on the slide and my rav4 was free!!!

I made my own slide hammer with vise grips. I took a 4ft 7/16 threaded rod, 1/2 washer, 7/16 nut and 5ib slider. threaded the vise grips on one side, slide the hammer on other then put the nut and washer on and got it off within 2 mins.

The Harbor Freight slide hammer is about half the Amazon price and comes with several attachments. Not a vice grip attachment though. Your adaptation of vice grips is excellent and the way you did it, it can still be used as common vice grips. Score.

I had to fabricate a tool to pull the axle on my Plymouth Voyager. I used a long piece of angle iron (bed frame) with a piece welded to the end to hook over the fat part of the axle at the transmission. In my case, there was just enough room to get something between the axle and the trans case. On the other end of the angle iron, I welded a piece that I could whack with a hammer. I also used a long worm-gear clamp to hold the tool so it wouldn't slip off the axle. I could modify my "tool" to adapt a slide hammer.

In fact I can feel the race and the rubber of the bearing (or seal) at the trans case pulling out about 1/2" but the axle never frees (I'm pretty sure thats not normal) !? I've tried rotating, slide hammering, prying...nothing works. Its almost identicle to your video but without the success. Any suggestion?
