Slides vs Scenes in OBS or Ecamm (Which is best?)

Let's discuss using slides vs scenes in OBS or Ecamm. When using slides as part of your production in OBS or Ecamm, should you advance your slides from your slideshow player (e.g. PPT or Keynote) or should you set up a scene for each slide? I'll share the pros and cons of each approach.

OMGoodness! You are adorable! I've been searching and searching with such disappointment for a comprehensive learning OBS tutorial and I finally found you! and you're too cute to boot! My husband was watching over my shoulder and says, "She reminds me a lot of a younger you!" (We've known each other since we were in grade school and we're now in our late 40's!)

I normally add all my slides as image slide source in just a single scene. You can navigate from one slide to another using the arrow keys.

Glade the clock mystery is solved, I started wondering about it a few time but keep forgetting to ask. Also I was thinking the OBS Multiview may help identify the scenes but I think it is limited to like 8. Also OBS has Studio Mode but I personally do not like using it.

I find that using Live Video in Keynote also gives me lots of creative options. For example, I can animate the camera, so it slides to a new position. I then just bring the Keynote into Ecamm Live or OBS. I'm sure there's some downsides to this (e.g., CPU load on the computer), but I have a MacBook Pro M3, so that is minimal.

Adding to your point about making an animated slide into a video file: In PowerPoint at least, you can time your animations with the video export in mind. I.E., make it a second or two between each separate animation (or animation group) on the same slide, so that when you are dealing with the video file, you can pause the video before the next animation if you have more than one thing going on, on the same slide. This would only get real complicated if you have an audio file that is supposed to be playing simultaneously with the slide show.

So in the case of animations for multiple points on the same slide, you can play your animation, say your point, and press pause. Rinse and repeat.

You can run PowerPoint on a secondary PC and capture it with a USB/HDMI capture card, if your computer lets you. OBS should see it as a video input.

I use Ecamm. I prefer to use scenes if I’m presenting static slides. However, if the presentation is going to have motions I prefer Keynote into Ecamm.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've been enjoying exporting the animated slides as movie files. Then I don't have to worry about running Keynote (or it freezing on me like it did here 😂 )

Do you still use your stream deck if using scenes?

Yes, I use it to advance the scenes or go back to a previous one. I still use the other buttons for being able to quickly mute myself or use other Zoom hotkeys in addition to controlling the scenes.
