I actually like the addition of Rollo, i think it really shows just how flawed vash is. Hes so desperate to help people and make everyone happy that, as wolfwood points out, he makes promises he couldnt possibly hope to keep. I think it also adds to the fact that later on while vash is seeing wolfwood distressed because hes coming to realize hes going to have to kill livio, vash even tho hes still upset with wolfwood for Rollos death interferes. Ignoring vashs no killing rule for a second, Vash could have let wolfwood kill livio because he killed rollo but he doesnt want wolfwood to hurt that way because he sees that livio is important to him. He doesnt want wolfwood to have to put down someone who was a friend even though wolfwood took a friend away from him.

I dig, Nai not wearing actual "Human" clothes though. It is a visual and character design storytelling of Nai really hating humans that he won't "dress like them". Since his cloak isn't really even a cloak/clothes . It is his Knives. It supports his ideology of wiping everything human to make a new world fit for plants. Like he at least don't have the hypocrisy to retain any human made stuff in the world he is gonna make. Like he would rather be butt ass naked than to wear human clothing in his new world
@shadowsrulemymind

I just wanna note that the reason nai wears the weird hoodie thing is for a couple of reasons! The very appearance of it at all is to show how alien nai is, you cant even really decern what materials its made out of. It shows how while he embraces that hes a plant, vash doesnt. Vash wears stuff thats very recognizable to us, it makes him look very human. Another reason for nais hoodie thing is the hood itself being a way to show nai hiding away and trying to pretend hes not afraid and isnt hurt by whats happened to him. I think it also comforts him. He has a hood over his head during the last run as the plants are killed, we see how horrified and scared he is but when he takes if off when vash shows up he acts like he wasnt just freaking out. He almost always wears it when playing the piano which he and vash used to do together, hurting from not having his brother playing along side him anymore. And he suddenly is wearing the hood again during ep 11 when he kills rems memory, showing that killing her hurt him too. He loved rem and when she chose to save the humans over getting in the pod with them, he felt betrayed. His hood us actually really important to show how nai is hiding part of how hes truly feeling, hes trying to be tougher than he actually is.

Turns out Roberto was in the manga, I remember, he didn't even have a name, just mentioned once as the guy that taught Meryl how to use Derringer guns, so fleshing him out more was pretty cool, and them being reporters like at the end of the manga was pretty cool ig, maybe Meryl will go back to being an insurance agent with Milly if she gets demoted like they had said in the last episode, it was cool they had mentioned the insurance company too I'm like oh my god I just can't wait for the next season. Studio Orange better animate Vash barking like a dog or else. 👹

Stampede was a neat vibe, like the world/setting refused to play along with Vash's coping mechanism persona compared to other Trigun media.

It's not a coping mechanism, it's morality.
@landmindssoul4636

This is why the stampede is off. It portrays his morality as a coping mechanism rather than a world view he developed cause of rem. Yes, he tries to keep her alive through his morality. It happens in all version. But that explains his extremism, why he allows himself to get hurt or even struggle to listen to others. But that wasn't all. He believed in those morals. He firmly believed that love and peace was the way. He wants to protect others not just for rem but because he knows someone's gonna loose a family member just like he did. He wants to stop people from hurting eachother cause to him anyone who gets hurt is a lost. It's universal pain that he wants to put an end to. They just reduced his morality to a batman story of "I lost my parents." therefore I don't kill.

@hetsu5524 yeah, That's the point. Your supposed to think its nonsensical. It's his character flaw that he is pacifist to an EXTREME. He doesn't realize how biased he is since like knives he's a plant and can live. If human behaved like Vash, he would die. Vash goes through trials in 98 anime and manga to help him realize his worldview isn't always right. Though stampede kinda speed runs his character so Vash seems more stupid and helpless than he actually is.

I think the main reason why the Vash's more darker side taking front row in Stampede is mainly because of Knives being a much more active presence from the start. I think after the July incident, with Knives gone, a lot of the stuff that was introduced and teased throughout season 1 will take front and center, like Legato will become the main villain and forming the Gung ho guns to take revenge for what happened to Knives, since we've already seen Rai-Dei on a wanted poster and Midvalley was mentioned in a newspaper in the July episodes. The writers did mention that a lot of the characters feel incomplete by design for this season, so we might see the characters resemble their manga selves as the series goes on. Great video though, glad more people are open to this new interpretation of one of my favorite series of all time.

i think stampede works pretty well as supplementary material to the original manga! we got more of wolfwood’s backstory with livio (which was kinda missing in trimax) and i also feel like knives as a character was a bit more fleshed out than in either the manga or the 98 anime (just because he got more screen time, for once) honestly i’d take whatever trigun release i can get in the year of our lord 2023

16:03 they probably only got enough for 12 episodes and felt they needed to establish everything that was deemed too complicated to set up in either previous version of Trigun-mostly because introducing all of that setting helps them say different and more complex things than previous Triguns.

Stampede was my first foray into the trigun universe and boy did it sink its claws in me. My girlfriend saw it on hulu and suggested we give it a shot and holy shit I’m glad we did. I found it very compelling and I love Vash’s character so much already. The opening is so fuckin fire I can’t get it out of my head, the animation is beautiful. You can feel and see the inspiration drawn from other similar concepts and it’s awesome. Can’t wait to dive into the OG anime and the manga.

20:14 Now that you mention it, the Mysterio thing was probably intentional, as was making Knives’s bladed stamen look like Doc Ock. And his base power of being similar to Carnage. And also Vash’s bionic arm containing a grappling hook, which he uses to “web” swing. Nightow loves Spider-Man.

I agree with practically everything you say!! I personally watched Stampede first, I went in knowing nothing about Trigun except having seen Vash somewhere years ago in pictures, but that was it. And going in Knowing ANYTHING was fantastic. Yeah, there were things that weren't the best. I didn't care that much about Wolfwood, Livio or Legato when I watched it, for example. But besides that I enjoyed Stampede SO much that I went to the 98 Version and then to the Manga. And Man, the Manga is just superior in everything except action scenes (we know how chaotic af the Panels are 😂). But I actually still like Stampede more than the 98 Version. Some fans may want to kill me... But I think the 98 Version is Overrated due to Nostalgia 😅 I mean, is not bad at all, I liked it. But not even as much as Stampede or the Manga. It has its issues too 🫡 So now my Only Hope is for Stampede S2 Vash to be more like his Manga counterpart!! I rather have Manga Vash than 98 Vash 🫣 I Love him so much 😭💕✨ My only real fear is that we won't have that heartbreaking scene when Vash Remembers July... As we saw July's destruction right now in Stamped, even if they do something similar in S2, I daubt it would have the same impact... I sometimes re-read those chapters, is so heartbreaking, but so good 🥲🥲

I definitely agree with the gripe about Livio. My biggest gripe was the fact they combined the sand steemer scenario with wolfwood protecting the orphanage. While the scenes were still good, and I did enjoy it, I definitely think it would have been better to not change it, or to have just not combined the two things, even if it was meant to demonstrate Wolfwoods motivations and character. We didn't need it yet, let people think him just an asshole for awhile and build a little slowly to it, that would have been better and closer to the original. I also understand though that they wanted to get as much information in during season 1 to hook people in and make them care and hold interest for as long as possible, as that really is the bottom line of streaming services and whether the studios get the green light on additional seasons. Unfortunately due to how people watch media nowadays it's a lot harder to have slow storylines that feel compelling at times especially if they start out as comedy. it just doesn't hook people as well it seems. which is really unfortunate cause i do miss the pacing and tone of the original series in someways, but for me at least, I can follow the plot here A LOT easier than in the previous iterations. I've read trimax and i've watched the 98 anime series, and i didn't understand the 98 anime at all and really didn't understand what they were trying to do until i read trimax a few months ago. mind you i was watching the anime in high school, so that might also have had something to do with my lack of understanding.

I find stampede to be awesome but more so than anything I find it to be its own thing. it's trigun but a retelling of the it. I've read a lot of interviews on it and getting the context the characters are supposed to be immature before we get the characters we know more I think is what's great. I think we'll get more of what we love next season but I genuinely hope it's more than 12 episodes. I love how you pointed out the happy goofy to serious pipeline because that's what's really missing. I really hope Vash becomes goofy.

18:06 Monev was changed to set up quite a lot about Vash, Wolfwood, and Knives (and also Meryl to a lesser extent). That plotline was kept simple so the focus was them instead. Most obvious point that that episode got across to me: “Oh, Knives basically rules the world already through the power the Eye of Michael seems to have as a very centralized religious institution, doesn’t he? Vash has already lost. He just won’t admit it yet.”

I completely agree with everything you've said. With 2 exceptions. 1: if there was only 1 change I'd make, it would be to give Vash something closer to his original look. 2: most Trigun media starts AFTER July is destroyed. Maybe his happy exterior is going to come back in a BIG way because of it in future things

As someone who's only seen the 90's anime (and the movie), l was really happy to see E.G. The Mine get more screentime and present himself as a threat. I liked his role in the old anime, basically murdering the other Gung-ho Guns who failed in their mission before Rai-Dei kills him in turn just for the chance to duel Vash. But we never got to see what he was truly capable of, and Stampede gave him just enough screentime to do that. By and large, I still prefer the anime to Stampede so far, but still, it's nice to see characters who barely appeared before (or never, in Elendira and Livio's cases) get their time to shine. I've heard things about Livio and his alter-ego Razlo, so I'm really hoping Razlo makes his debut in the second half. He's always been a character I've wanted to see in anime form.

So far I was able to embrace all changes made so far just fine. Do I prefer what I knew from the manga? Sure, but I am also willing to trust Nightow & the crew behind Trigun Stampede to present me with a great new version of Trigun, and thus far they presented me with an anime that I enjoy just as much, and partially even more than the old one. Also regarding some nitpicks. I'd say, one can't have the cake and eat it to. First of all, season 1 just getting 12 instead of more episodes is just something we have to live with from a business & industry side of things. So regarding the complaints about XYZ not showing up yet, trying to shoehorn Midvalley and all the other Gung Ho Guns into these 12 episodes wouldn't have worked. It would've been too much, for too little time. I've noticed how people complain about the pacing, but if anything would've truly given us bad pacing, that would've been too fast, that would've been the attempt to shoehorn every single Gung Ho Gun and other villains into this series. And yes, we only got a little of Legato, Livio & Elendira, but this was done with intention. It was an introduction to them at earlier stages of their lives, with much bigger things still to come. The director already shared a sketch of a more grown version of Elendira, talking about how she will become stronger. And that was before season 2 was even announced. One can dislike what they've seen of Livio & Legato so far, but we simply weren't supposed to see more of them yet. Trigun Stampede Season 1 has basically been an elaborate prologue to a much bigger story. One may try to view this prologue as its own story, ignoring everything that is still to come, but there is really no point in doing so. Especially if people want to do so, by comparing it to the manga. Like, yes of course we've gotten so much amazing stuff with someone like Livio in Trigun Maximum, that on the grand scheme of things is better than what we saw of him in Trigun Stampede, but it makes no sense to compare his entire story, to what is his introduction in Trigun Stampede. Imagine they would've tried to shoehorn Livio's entire story into these last 6 episodes of Trigun Stampede, just for the sake of giving fans everything they knew about Livio? That would've done way more damage than good. That would've caused true problems(not just nitpicks from fans wanting that sweet fan service of Razlo swinging around 3 huge guns and turning into this super cool gunslinging cowboy) in the quality of the writing of this show. So instead, they established that he is there, that he has a connection to Wolfwood, that there is way more to him than meets the eye at first glance, and that there is still much more to come with the vision Livio had, and with what Legato said about him still being of use to them. And these same things can basically be said about a bunch of others as well.

Great video, loved hearing your thoughts! I do agree that a lot of your nit-picks are likely to be covered in season 2 but I also think some of the decisions were based on the fact that there would potentially not be a season two regardless of it already being planned out since in a recent Orange panel they did say that the future of the series would depend on reception and the amount fan support and they could actually do quite a few seasons so long as the support remains strong enough to fund it ("the sky's the limit" or smth like that is what they said). I also stand by Trimax being the top piece of Trigun media so far but the fact that they're shuffling so much of the timeline and dropping hints to stuff we didn't see til the endgame of Trimax has me hyped for what they're planning in season 2. I am hoping so hard for the Vash/Wolfwood shared braincell shenanigans in the next season since these first 12 eps felt very much like a foundation so that they could really start the adventures of the Trigun crew for future seasons. I am also super stoked to see what Milly will be like (though slightly afraid admittedly); gosh Orange really did just serve us some good fukin food, man.

You brought up a lot of points i had while watching too, especially how Vash is kinda just emo from the start, i respect the original anime a lot for doing an actual 50 50 cut between episodes of goofy vash an serious vash, felt super rewarding when shit actually got real. At first i was really bother by a lot of those changes like legato or crimson nail being super lame and just showing up for the sake of it. Initially the announcement of season2 made me think that it actually fixes every issue i had and i was super hyped but the more i think about it it's still not perfect even if season 2 delivers. I wish the show had more restrain to keep the characters those characters for later instead of showign them but not doing anything with them, sure we might see the cool stuff the eventually do but especially for new viewers they are missing the original impact. I really like crimson nail because she came in just impaling legato who was like one of the most powerful beings in the manga at that point with giant ass nails, now we saw a crying test tube kid that might maybe grew up to be cool. Also Wolfwoods arc basically being over already really makes me wonder how they want to keep up the steam when they already used all the good material. As a new iteration of the show it's still bizarre how good it worked though, usually with a reboot like this it will just straight up suck or have nothign in common with the original but while watching i actually had a lot of moment where i liked the new structure and changes. Also of course, the show looks straight up incredible, this is the best 3D TV anime has looked and everyone who's still bashing CGI out of principle should watch this

One small detail I noticed about knives' cloak design is that it totally resembles young vash's cryochamber outfit when he first appeared, so my theory is that like playing the piano, it's another way for knives to keep his brother alongside him, seeing that he is always seen in that cloak for the hundred year separation and only takes it off when they are finally "on the same side" in ep11

I’m extremely grateful for Tristamps existence be it’s what got me to finally check out Trigun after years of vaguely knowing about it. I also had an amazing time watching it! The animation is stunning and honestly it’s worth watching just for that alone. However, the experience kind of soured after watching 98 and reading Trimax. I feel like my biggest issue with Tristamp (ESPECIALLY after reading Trimax) was that it kind of… really dropped the ball when it came to both Vash and Knives. I really dislike the way Tristamp has Knives be just naturally more alien and less human, when the most devastating part of the backstory was how human he was (for lack of a better word lmao) before everything fell apart. Same with Vash just being innately the more kind and sensitive one when Tristamp makes it clear how much of that is an active choice he makes. I’m hoping that more depth is given in season 2, but it feels a little late for that at this point. (Also the entire plot of Knives using Vash to impregnate the plants to create more independents was. Well that certainly was A Choice That Was Made.)

I watched the entirety of tristamp and the '98 anime in less than a week. I LOVE Vash, and I love both anime pretty equally, though story-wise I like tristamp more just because of the way it tells the story is more modern (which, yeah, makes sense) and the way is handled Meryl's character without bouncing back and forth between badass and damsel in distress. I do really want to read the manga but I dont really know where to find it.

Honestly i was one of the few people I knew of who went into this hopeful as I thought the 3d did decently well in the trailer especially with how crazy Vash is known to move. But I couldn't even really get past episode one, the story and characterization just did not mesh with me at all. Primarily Vash coming off as annoying not goofy and just the total changes to Meryl and the set up compared to the previous anime. The creator may approve, but it doesnt hit what I need to consider it a good Trigun anime.

19:33 Legato was set up, again to show just how much power Knives has over Nomansland. Knives has, indeed, won over the hearts and minds of enough people that it’s a problem. This makes it matter more later when Vash finally gets the small victory of winning over Wolfwood and Meryl to fighting with and for him against Knives in July. Would I have liked it better if all of this was set up across 12 episodes that were 47 minutes in length or 24 episodes that were 23.5 minutes in length? Yes! It definitely needed. Do I think Studio Orange was ever going to get more than 12 episodes of 23.5? No. The way anime gets made is not good. And we lose out for it.

Vash could have directed the beam to make it not hit Nai in the last episode, like he could have moved in a helix along the orbit than a straight line, that would save both of them and he wouldn't fall down as a meteorite like that. That is only one of many issues I have with this series. Their worldviews feel forced, the battle outcomes feel forced. Anyway Trigun/Vash is one of my favorite manga series/characters so this is still very much enjoyable. 8/10 overall, 10/10 enjoyability, same as the manga.

As a trans woman, myself, I fucking DESPISE what Stampede did to Elendira the Crimson Nail. She could have been some amazing trans representation, but no, they changed her into a fucking immortal loli cis woman... That felt like a huge slap in the face to trans fans of the classic manga.
@Hey-Its-Dingo

If I missed something, and she is still trans, they sure as fuck didn't make that obvious, outside of having a guy voice her in Japanese. (But that guy has actually voiced cis women in anime before, so I still don't count it)
@Teknanam
@Teknanam 3 ай бұрын
Cis woman? Elendira isn't even human in Stampede. Who knows what they will develop into, but them being trans wasn't exactly handled tastefully in in the manga. They had no real backstory and random characters would mistake Elendira as a crossdresser or outright call her a man. That was basically it. Otherwise, Elendira was just some strong human who became loyal to Knives and developed a rivalry with Legato. They were cool, but I'm not surprised Tristamp changed them to better justify how strong they will be and how off they appear to others. Though no one would expect the little girl form.
@Hey-Its-Dingo
@Hey-Its-Dingo 3 ай бұрын
@@Teknanam Honestly, I would have preferred they just give her a stronger backstory, and flesh her out to fix those issues rather than erasing her trans identity all together. The manga came out in the 90's, there was WAY worse contemporary trans rep out there.

@@Hey-Its-Dingo But who's to say they did erase it? It might come into play in Season 2, What with Stampede basically being a reimagined stealth prequel to what will likely be a Maximum-style beginning. Ultimately, Stampede did give backstory to Elendira when previously there was none. It might not have been the type anyone would've imagined, but it is still a backstory. I could see S2 Elendira being closer to their manga self along with more indications of them being trans. Maybe ones that aren't just "that man looks prettier than me" from Meryl. I should note though that while Trigun is a manga that begin in the 90s, Elendira herself didn't show up until the 2000s.

I am a new fan of Trigun, but I think that one detail you missed (or just didn't bring up) was that Trigun Stampede S1 is somewhat a prequel. Episode 12 ended with Vash accidentally destroying the city of July, which, in the manga and og anime, was already destroyed. So S2 or Part 2 might be setting up to be the normal Trigun shenanigans with Vash the Stampede

Trigun stampede is awful, and it's not because of the cgi or the lack of milly. The major issue with trigun stampede is the awful writing and lack of atmosphere. For starters, the atmosphere. I don't mind the cgi, although I prefer 2D. I think the cgi is amazing, but it comes with a lot of drawbacks. For starters, the Cgi looks great, but it's too clean and bright. It just all feels way too nice for the dessert and doesn't make sense with the story, especially one that is supposed to be more serious and has people barely scraping by to live. A great example of this is when the bad lads gang shows up. Not only does their animation look bad, but the color palette looks just doesn't match. I also feel that the show loses that Western feel the OG show and comic had, and while I actually think vash doesn't look bad, he clearly doesn't match his surroundings. The art isn't the biggest problem though, I can overlook all these things but what I couldn't stand for at all was the writing. They pretty much completely removed the comedy which woulf be fine I geuss if they were trying to go a more serious route as it seems but it's weird because they still through a little bit of random humor in that doesn't end up being funny just breaks your illusion of the story like the badlands gang members getting the pictures which wasn't really even funny and defeats the purpose of the show being serious. That being said, it's not like the OG wasn't serious when it needed to be infact it made more sense for vash to be providing the comedy relief. It both added to his charm, his weird way of non-violently disarming people and the way he tried to hide his past skeleton in his closet with comedy. The show also often feels way too fast to the point you never get to breathe, while the OG show had some filler I wasn't a huge fan of it also had a lot of Thought-provoking scenes and a great overarching tone of mystery. One of my favorite scenes of all of them is in the episode lost july when the girl who tried to kill him along with the whole town recognized he was also the one who had found and comforted her after the explosion. The now show really just doesn't have a lot of intrigue, a lot of the stuff just feels very recycled from other things, especially have the classic story with the brainwashed close friend from my past and I have to remind him of my humanity. The betrayal from the kid I saw a mile away and was pretty cliche, too, or the part where wolfwood shoots the kid trigun is trying to save for literally no other reason than plot. He spends the whole time almost getting killed and doesn't shoot back only to kill him after saying this is insufferable Because he didn't want to follow vashes ideals all of the sudden when he was out of danger and vash seemed to finally get through to the monster. In the show this part makes complete sense because the guy he shoots one of the gung-ho guns Had his revolver pointed at the girls and didn't want them to be killed he's already let vash be in plenty of dangerous situations, why is this diffrent. This simply just does not make sense for his character, especially after he already let it go that far, and vash was able to deesculate the situation and only waits till after he got done shooting a mini gun at him and calmed down. Speaking of wolfwood, my last point of contention, the characters. I can say without a doubt that the character writing is the worst part of the show. No one is interesting or mysterious at all, and everyone is lobotomized and lacking any kind of character. For starters, just in the first episode, Vash is already seen to be completely insufferable and lacking all the charm and wit he had in the anime. He no longer is a confident marksman who seems to hide his past with some weird sense of humor, no. He is now a bumbling idiot who doesn't even have carry bullets who start crying and having a breakdown because he wasn't prepared. This is something the show would have usually made a comedic affair, but his crying like an idiot neither pulls off being serious or funny. Also, while I don't mind him dropping the womanizing and weird, they also completely forgot to give him any kind of character flaw what so ever other than breaking out into random fits. The other characters don't fare much better with wolfwood being the worst. Meryl has lost alot of her attitude which I thought could be a bit much in the OG but they also removed all of her personality. She is basically a revolving doormat for the other characters, Knives went from interesting, imposing monster to edgy teenage boy. Roberto, I don't mind but is pretty basic and inoffensive he adds nothing other than saying newbie 30 times and making me want to break something. I think worst of the the Charcters though is wolfwood. He epitomizes one note Character. They took an amazing and interesting character and boiled him down to just angst and Neuroticism. Worst of all, he literally can not stop quiping every five seconds like he has the worlds largest chip on his shoulder like some hot topic wannabe. Not to mention a complete hypocrite for killing rollo yet wanting to try and save his friend. This show doesn't deserve to be among the like of the OG Trigun period.
